Methodological challenges to research among Chinese : using mixed methods to investigate older persons with depression in Macau

The article offers an example of using a mixed methods design that was implemented when investigating depression among Chinese older persons in Macau. A challenge in designing the study was that in light of literature on Chinese culture and somatization theory, the acceptability of the methodology was uncertain. Participants (n = 31) were purposively selected and quantitative data were collected using multiple standardized measures. Questions raised by the quantitative approach were then reflected through in-depth interviews. Four dominant categories emerged: (a) negative thinking, (b) physical limitations and complaints, (c) present living conditions and social support, and (d) the lives participants have lived. There was a high level of congruence between quantitative scores and narratives. The research approach was acceptable to the participants, and the findings contributed to an understanding of depression and therapeutic interventions for that population within Chinese culture.

Seeking romance and a once in a life-time experience : considering attributes that attract honeymooners to destinations

Couples on their honeymoon represent a vital part of the tourism market. Since the destination decision for honeymooners is a joint decision, paired in-depth interviews were conducted with ten British couples to explore their honeymoon destination decision making. The themes that arose from this qualitative study were consistent with more general studies on destination choice, including: culture, natural environment, and accommodation. New themes developed from the research included familiarity, romance, and budget. The results indicate that couples were more likely to stretch their budget for a honeymoon, or appear to be less concerned about the cost of their trip, as many see it as a once in a lifetime experience. This indicates that this valuable segment ofthe market should be further explored.

Monsters: monstrous identities in young adult romance

Monstrous identities in fantasy for young adults often function as metaphors for cultural tensions about romantic and sexual relations between young people, and about how the young interact with the generation that precedes them. This essay considers four monster figures prevalent in Young Adult (YA) fantasy: the vampire, the werewolf, the monstrous mother, and the monstrous father and analyses their manifestation in YA romances by Robin McKinley, Stephenie Meyer, L. K. Smith and Maggie Stiefvater. It considers what these representations tell us about cultural anxieties over the sexuality of young women, and how they are positioned as reading subjects.

In search of best practices in responsible gambling ( RG ) : a report on a comparative study of RG among Macau, Las Vegas, and Melbourne, presented to the MSAR Bureau of Gaming Inspection and Coordination (DICJ).

This is a project sponsored by the Asia Pacific Association for Gambling Studies (APAGS) and supported by funds from the MSAR’s Bureau of Gambling Inspection and Coordination (DICJ). The research team comprises as Chief Investigators: Prof. Zhidong Hao of the University of Macau; Prof. Linda Hancock of Deakin University, Australia, and Prof. William Thompson, University of Las Vegas (UNLV). The project research was conducted between the end of December 2012 and July 2013.
The starting point for the research was to select four out of the six casino companies licensed to operate in Macau that also operate transnationally, that is, either in Las Vegas or Melbourne. Hence, the Venetian, Wynn, MGM, and the Melco-Crown Entertainment are the focus of research. The main objectives of the project are to explore how responsible gambling is framed in each of the three jurisdictions (Macau, Las Vegas and Melbourne); how it is approached cross-jurisdictionally by each of the companies; and to assess current approaches within a broader comparative context against international best practice. The research explores Responsible Gambling measures taken by a range of stakeholders including the government/regulators in each of the three jurisdictions, casino managements, problem gambling counselling services, unions and community organizations. The research emphasizes what problems prevail, and the implications of this research for enhancing Responsible Gambling in Macau.

O romance de formação é emblemático do Século das Luzes. Surgido na Europa do século XVIII, o subgênero teve seu apogeu neste e no século XIX, confundindo seu período de maturidade com boa parte da vida do romance moderno antes que o gênero começasse a ser desconstruído. Com o foco centrado no desenvolvimento da vida do protagonista e sua consciente adaptação ao mundo burguês, o Bildungsroman tomou formas semelhantes em vários países — inclusive na poderosa Inglaterra de então. Com seu legado de otimismo humanista, influencia (positiva ou negativamente) toda a literatura posterior. David Copperfield, de Charles Dickens, é um dos mais conhecidos clássicos romances de formação ingleses, surgindo como referência explícita no romance pós-Segunda Guerra Mundial O apanhador no campo de centeio, do norte-americano J.D. Salinger. Através da análise do desenvolvimento pessoal e da formação dos protagonistas desses dois romances buscaremos ver as mudanças sofridas, de meados do século XIX a meados do século XX, pelo processo de inserção do indivíduo na realidade coletiva. Deste modo pode-se lançar uma reflexão sobre de onde veio e como é o jeito de o ser humano ver a si mesmo como aprendiz.

Imagens, esquinas e confluências : um roteiro cinematográfico baseado no romance O Quieto animal da esquina, de João Gilberto Noll, seguido de anotações

Este ensaio pretende, de um lado, identificar e descrever os traços dominantes da literatura e das demais poéticas contemporâneas, e, de outro, relatar o processo de transposição de um texto literário – o romance O Quieto Animal da Esquina, de João Gilberto Noll – para um texto de cinema, o roteiro cinematográfico homônimo, de minha autoria. Menos uma tese acadêmica do que uma tentativa de se constituir como um objeto artístico em si mesmo – tanto em sua condição de roteiro, quanto na de uma aproximação eminentemente subjetiva, não “científica”, de um modo de expressão – este ensaio é uma proposta de discussão sobre a rarefação de limites, sobre o diálogo e a interdependência das artes.

Análise sociológica do romance "Terras do sem fim"

Este trabalho consiste na análise sociológica do romance "Terras do Sem Fim", de Jorge Amado. Partimos da idéia de que a obra de arte não é apenas um reflexo da realidade mas que ela é capaz de reproduzir um determinado momento desta realidade, apreendendo-o em toda sua complexidade, embora através de sua própria especificidade. Procuramos portanto ao analisar esta obra captar o princípio estrutural que ordena o mundo ficcional e mostrar de que forma se faz a transposição do plano real ao plano romanesco. Em "Terras do Sem Fim" nos parece que as relações entre as personagens assim como sua trajetória são de terminadas pelo princípio do autoritarismo e da "malandragem”. Nesta sociedade cacaueira do princípio do século transposta para o romance, os coronéis, fazendeiros de cacau, dominam por meio da violência e da fraude, mas para dar livre curso à sua ambição ou para se realizarem no pleno individual, necessitam do concurso dos representantes dos grupos médios (advogados, médicos, funcionários públicos, jornalistas, etc.). Estes de melhor nível educacional, de origem urbana, detentores do "saber" utilizam-se desses trunfos para obterem dinheiro, prestígio social ou fama que os compensem pela sua submissão e lealdade aos coronéis. Em plano secundário, como na vida real, estão os trabalhadores e pessoas humildes que vivem sob a bota dos coronéis, não tendo maior peso político ou influência os acontecimentos. Para compreender essa estrutura social baseada na realidade baiana, partimos da análise da sociedade brasileira no, período estudado (Primeira República), analisando-a do ponto de vista econômico, político e social. Procuramos também mostrar como a formação e a vivência do escritor contribuem para a apreensão dessa realidade mas não seriam por si sós garantia dessa fidelidade que e, em última instância, determinada pela sensibilidade e pelo trabalho criador do artista.
