Sugarcane is the most important crop for sugar industry and raw material for bioethanol. Here we present a quantitative analysis of the gene content from publicly available sugarcane ESTs. The current sugarcane EST collection sampled orthologs for ~58 % of the closely-related sorghum proteome, suggesting that more than 10,000 sugarcane coding-genes remain undiscovered. Moreover the existence of more than 2,000 ncRNAs conserved between sugarcane and sorghum was revealed, among which over 500 are also detected in rice, supporting the existence of hundreds of conserved ncRNAs in grasses. New efforts towards sugarcane transcriptome sequencing were needed to sample the missing coding-genes as well as to expand the catalog of ncRNAs. © 2012 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.

CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVE: Children and adolescents who live in situations of social vulnerability present a series of health problems. Nonetheless, affirmations that sensory and cognitive abnormalities are present are a matter of controversy. The aim of this study was to investigate aspects to auditory processing, through applying the brainstem auditory evoked potential (BAEP) and behavioral auditory processing tests to children living on the streets, and comparison with a control group. DESIGN AND SETTING: Cross-sectional study in the Laboratory of Auditory Processing, School of Medicine, Universidade de São Paulo. METHODS: The auditory processing tests were applied to a group of 27 individuals, subdivided into 11 children (7 to 10 years old) and 16 adolescents (11 to 16 years old), of both sexes, in situations of social vulnerability, compared with an age-matched control group of 10 children and 11 adolescents without complaints. The BAEP test was also applied to investigate the integrity of the auditory pathway. RESULTS: For both children and adolescents, there were significant differences between the study and control groups in most of the tests applied, with significantly worse performance in the study group, except in the pediatric speech intelligibility test. Only one child had an abnormal result in the BAEP test. CONCLUSIONS: The results showed that the study group (children and adolescents) presented poor performance in the behavioral auditory processing tests, despite their unaltered auditory brainstem pathways, as shown by their normal results in the BAEP test.

The climate change narrative has changed from one of mitigation to one of adaptation. Governments around the world have created climate change frameworks which address how the country can better cope with the expected and unexpected changes due to global climate change. In an effort to do so, federal governments of Canada and the United States, as well as some provinces and states within these countries, have created detailed documents which outline what steps must be taken to adapt to these changes. However, not much is mentioned about how these steps will be translated in to policy, and how that policy will eventually be implemented. To examine the ability of governments to acknowledge and incorporate the plethora of scientific information to policy, consideration must be made for policy capacity. This report focuses on three sectors: water supply and demand; drought and flood planning; and forest and grassland ecosystems, and the word ‘capacity’ as related to nine different forms of policy capacity acknowledged in these frameworks. Qualitative content analysis using NVivo was carried out on fifty four frameworks and the results obtained show that there is a greater consideration for managerial capacity compared to analytical or political capacity. The data also indicated that although there were more Canadian frameworks which referred to policy capacity, the frameworks from the United States actually considered policy capacity to a greater degree.

OBJECTIVE: Excess body weight, defined by body mass index (BMI), may increase the risk of colorectal cancer. As a prerequisite to the determination of lifestyle attributable risks, we undertook a systematic review and meta-analysis of prospective observational studies to quantify colorectal cancer risk associated with increased BMI and explore for differences by gender, sub-site and study characteristics. METHOD: We searched MEDLINE and EMBASE (to December 2007), and other sources, selecting reports based on strict inclusion criteria. Random-effects meta-analyses and meta-regressions of study-specific incremental estimates were performed to determine the risk ratio (RR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) associated with a 5 kg/m(2) increase in BMI. RESULTS: We analysed 29 datasets from 28 articles, including 67,361 incident cases. Higher BMI was associated with colon (RR 1.24, 95% CIs: 1.20-1.28) and rectal (1.09, 1.05-1.14) cancers in men, and with colon cancer (1.09, 1.04-1.12) in women. Associations were stronger in men than in women for colon (P < 0.001) and rectal (P = 0.005) cancers. Associations were generally consistent across geographic populations. Study characteristics and adjustments accounted for only moderate variations of associations. CONCLUSION: Increasing BMI is associated with a modest increased risk of developing colon and rectal cancers, but this modest risk may translate to large attributable proportions in high-prevalence obese populations. Inter-gender differences point to potentially important mechanistic differences, which merit further research.

BACKGROUND & AIMS Non-selective beta-blockers (NSBB) are used in patients with cirrhosis and oesophageal varices. Experimental data suggest that NSBB inhibit angiogenesis and reduce bacterial translocation, which may prevent hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). We therefore assessed the effect of NSBB on HCC by performing a systematic review with meta-analyses of randomized trials. METHODS Electronic and manual searches were combined. Authors were contacted for unpublished data. Included trials assessed NSBB for patients with cirrhosis; the control group could receive any other intervention than NSBB. Fixed and random effects meta-analyses were performed with I(2) as a measure of heterogeneity. Subgroup, sensitivity, regression and sequential analyses were performed to evaluate heterogeneity, bias and the robustness of the results after adjusting for multiple testing. RESULTS Twenty-three randomized trials on 2618 patients with cirrhosis were included, of which 12 reported HCC incidence and 23 reported HCC mortality. The mean duration of follow-up was 26 months (range 8-82). In total, 47 of 694 patients randomized to NSBB developed HCC vs 65 of 697 controls (risk difference -0.026; 95% CI-0.052 to -0.001; number needed to treat 38 patients). There was no heterogeneity (I(2) = 7%) or evidence of small study effects (Eggers P = 0.402). The result was not confirmed in sequential analysis, which suggested that 3719 patients were needed to achieve the required information size. NSBB did not reduce HCC-related mortality (RD -0.011; 95% CI -0.040 to 0.017). CONCLUSIONS Non-selective beta-blockers may prevent HCC in patients with cirrhosis.

The purpose of this study was to investigate a selection of children's historical nonfiction literature for evidence of coherence. Although research has been conducted on coherence of textbook material and its influences on comprehension there has been limited study on coherence in children's nonfiction literature. Generally, textual coherence has been seen as critical in the comprehensibility of content area textbooks because it concerns the unity of connections among ideas and information. Disciplinary coherence concerns the extent to which authors of historical text show readers how historians think and write. Since young readers are apprentices in learning historical content and conventions of historical thinking, evidence of disciplinary coherence is significant in nonfiction literature for young readers. The sample of the study contained 32 books published between 1989 and 2000 ranging in length from less than 90 pages to more than 150 pages. Content analysis was the quantitative research technique used to measure 84 variables of textual and disciplinary coherence in three passages of each book, as proportions of the total number of words for each book. Reliability analyses and an examination of 750 correlations showed the extent to which variables were related in the books. Three important findings emerged from the study that should be considered in the selection and use of children's historical nonfiction literature in classrooms. First, characteristics of coherence are significantly related together in high quality nonfiction literature. Second, shorter books have a higher proportion of textual coherence than longer books as measured in three passages. Third, presence of the author is related to characteristics of coherence throughout the books. The findings show that nonfiction literature offers students content that researchers have found textbooks lack. Both younger and older students have the opportunity to learn the conventions of historical thinking as they learn content through nonfiction literature. Further, the children's literature, represented in the Orbis Pictus list, shows students that authors select, interpret, and question information, and give other interpretations. The implications of the study for teaching history, teacher preparation in content and literacy, school practices, children's librarians, and publishers of children's nonfiction are discussed.

In this dissertation, the cytogenetic characteristics of bone marrow cells from 41 multiple myeloma patients were investigated. These cytogenetic data were correlated with the total DNA content as measured by flow cytometry. Both the cytogenetic information and DNA content were then correlated with clinical data to determine if diagnosis and prognosis of multiple myeloma could be improved.^ One hundred percent of the patients demonstrated abnormal chromosome numbers per metaphase. The average chromosome number per metaphase ranged from 42 to 49.9, with a mean of 44.99. The percent hypodiploidy ranged from 0-100% and the percent hyperdiploidy from 0-53%. Detailed cytogenetic analyses were very difficult to perform because of the paucity of mitotic figures and the poor chromosome morphology. Thus, detailed chromosome banding analysis on these patients was impossible.^ Thirty seven percent of the patients had normal total DNA content, whereas 63% had abnormal amounts of DNA (one patient with less than normal amounts and 25 patients with greater than normal amounts of DNA).^ Several clinical parameters were used in the statistical analyses: tumor burden, patient status at biopsy, patient response status, past therapy, type of treatment and percent plasma cells. Only among these clinical parameters were any statistically significant correlations found: pretreatment tumor burden versus patient response, patient biopsy status versus patient response and past therapy versus patient response.^ No correlations were found between percent hypodiploid, diploid, hyperdiploid or DNA content, and the patient response status, nor were any found between those patients with: (a) normal plasma cells, low pretreatment tumor mass burden and more than 50% of the analyzed metaphases with 46 chromosomes; (b) normal amounts of DNA, low pretreatment tumor mass burden and more than 50% of the metaphases with 46 chromosomes; (c) normal amounts of DNA and normal quantities of plasma cells; (d) abnormal amounts of DNA, abnormal amounts of plasma cells, high pretreatment tumor mass burden and less than 50% of the metaphases with 46 chromosomes.^ Technical drawbacks of both cytogenetic and DNA content analysis in these multiple myeloma patients are discussed along with the lack of correlations between DNA content and chromosome number. Refined chromosome banding analysis awaits technical improvements before we can understand which chromosome material (if any) makes up the "extra" amounts of DNA in these patients. None of the correlations tested can be used as diagnostic or prognostic aids for multiple myeloma. ^

Alternate splicing of the cyclin D1 gene gives rise to transcript a and b which encode two protein isoforms cyclin D1a and cyclin D1b. Through testing transcript a and transcript b in a series of human samples, we found that cyclin D1 transcript b is ubiquitously expressed as transcript a but in the lower abundance compared to transcript a. Epidemiological studies have reported that the cyclin D1 gene (CCND1) G870A polymorphism influences the risk for a variety of cancer. In this investigation, we examined the cyclin D1b levels in tumor samples with different genotypes and found that higher levels of cyclin D1b are expressed from the A allele than the G allele. Cyclin D1 is known as a cell cycle regulator facilitating the progression of the cell cycle from G1 to S phase in response to the mitogenic signals. It also interacts with several transcription factors and transcriptional coregulators to modulate their activities. It has been reported that cyclin D1a can substitute for estrogen to activate estrogen receptor α (ERα) mediated transcription and can induce the proliferation of estrogen responsive tissues. However the biological role of cyclin D1b in ERα transcriptional regulation has not been previously explored. In this study, we determined that cyclin D1b antagonizes the action of cyclin D1a on ERα mediated transcription. Cell proliferation assays provided the evidence that cyclin D1b negatively regulates estrogen responsive breast cancer cell growth. Taken together, our findings show that the CCND1 G870A polymorphism is correlated with increased levels of cyclin D1b and that cyclin D1b antagonizes the action of cyclin D1a on ERα mediated transcription providing evidence for the mechanism by which the CCND1 G870A polymorphism may be protective in certain types of breast cancer. ^

Based on the recent census data this paper analyses the district level rural to urban migration rates (both intra-state and the inter-state) among males and females separately. Both the rates are closely associated irrespective of whether the migrants originate from the rural areas within the state or outside the state. This would suggest that women usually migrate as accompanists of the males. Though many of the relatively poor and backward states actually show large population mobility, which is primarily in search of a livelihood, the mobility of male population is also seen to be prominent in the relatively advanced states like Maharashtra and Gujarat. Rapid migration of rural females within the boundaries of the states is, however, evident across most of the regions. The social networks, which play an important role in the context of migration are prevalent among the short distance migrants and tend to lose their significance with a rise in the distance between the place of origin and destination though there are some exceptions to this phenomenon. Besides the north-south divide in the Indian context is indeed a significant phenomenon with a few exceptions of metropolitan cities. As regards the effect of factors at the place of destination, prospects for better job opportunities are a major determinant of male migration. Low castes and minority groups tend to pull migration through network effects. Among females also these effects are evident though with the inclusion of the male migration rate they become less significant. Finally the paper brings out the policy implications.
