Amaranth bars enriched with fructans: acceptability and nutritional value. There is an increasing appeal for convenience foods with potential health benefits to the consumer. Raw materials with high nutritional value and functional properties must be used on the development of these food products. Amaranth is a gluten-free grain with high nutrition value. Inulin and oligofructose are prebiotic ingredients presenting effects as the enhancement of calcium absorption. Amaranth bars enriched with inulin and oligofructose were developed in the flavors: banana, Brazilian nuts and dried grape, coconut, peach, strawberry and wall nut. The proximate composition were determined and compared to commercial cereal bars, available in traditional (n=59), light (n=60), diet (n=8), with soy (n=10) and quinoa (n=1) categories. Amaranth bars present mean global acceptance values from 6.3 to 7.6 on a 9-point hedonic scale, nutritional advantages as compared to commercial cereal bars (caloric reduction and higher levels of dietary fiber). Although amaranth is an unknown raw material in Brazil, it shows good potential to be used in the manufacturing of ready-to-eat products. As they are gluten free, these amaranth bars are also an alternative product for celiacs, also contributing to the enhancement of calcium absorption, a problem frequently observed in these patients.

The aim of this work was to encapsulate a casein hydrolysate by spray drying using maltodextrins (DE 10 and 20) as wall materials and to evaluate the efficiency of the microencapsulation in attenuating the bitter taste of the hydrolysate using protein bars as the model system. Microcapsules were evaluated for morphology (SEM), particle size, hygroscopicity, solubility, thermal behavior (DSC), and bitter taste with a trained sensory panel by a paired comparison test (nonencapsulated samples vs. encapsulated samples). Bars were prepared with the addition of 3% casein hydrolysate at free or both encapsulated forms, and were then evaluated for their moisture, water activity (a(w)) and for their bitter taste by a ranking test. Microcapsules were of the matrix type, having continuous surfaces with no apparent porosity for both coatings. Both encapsulated casein hydrolysates had similar hygroscopicity, and lower values than free encapsulated hydrolysates. The degree of hydrolysis of the maltodextrin influenced only the particle size and T(g). The sensory panel considered the protein bars produced with both encapsulated materials less bitter (p < 0.05) than those produced with the free casein hydrolysates. Microencapsulation by spray drying with maltodextrin DE 10 and 20 was successful to attenuate the bitter taste and the hygroscopicity of casein hydrolysates.

In this work cassava bagasse, a by-product of cassava starch industrialization was investigated as a new raw material to extract cellulose whiskers. This by-product is basically constituted of cellulose fibers (17.5 wt%) and residual starch (82 wt%). Therefore, this residue contains both natural fibers and a considerable quantity of starch and this composition suggests the possibility of using cassava bagasse to prepare both starch nanocrystals and cellulose whiskers. In this way, the preparation of cellulose whiskers was investigated employing conditions of sulfuric acid hydrolysis treatment found in the literature. The ensuing materials were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction experiments. The results showed that high aspect ratio cellulose whiskers were successfully obtained. The reinforcing capability of cellulose whiskers extracted from cassava bagasse was investigated using natural rubber as matrix. High mechanical properties were observed from dynamic mechanical analysis. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This paper introduces a simple fiber/tape composite that is easy to prepare and structurally more uniform. This novel composite provides a good alternative standard composite sample for experimental study of various phenomena and issues in fiber reinforced composite behaviors. Experimental results in the present work demonstrate how the fiber fragmentation, fiber-reinforcing effect and the gauge length effect can be successfully evaluated by using this novel composite specimen.

Objective: To examine the impact of smoke-free policies on revenue in Tasmanian bars.

Method: Monthly sales turnover from January 2002 to March 2007, provided by the Australian Bureau of Statistics was analysed. There were two outcome measures: (1) the ratio of monthly bar sales turnover in Tasmania to monthly bar sales turnover in four other Australian states, and (2) the ratio of monthly bar turnover to monthly retail turnover in Tasmania. Linear regression was used to assess the impact of the smoke-free policy on expenditure.

Results: The smoke-free policy had no effect on sales turnover.

Conclusion: The smoke-free policy protects hospitality workers and patrons from exposure to secondhand smoke and has had no adverse effect on sales turnover.

Silk fibroin is a useful protein polymer for biomaterials and tissue engineering. In this work, porogen leached scaffolds prepared from aqueous and HFIP silk solutions were reinforced through the addition of silk particles. This led to about 40 times increase in the specific compressive modulus and the yield strength of HFIP-based scaffolds. This increase in mechanical properties resulted from the high interfacial cohesion between the silk matrix and the reinforcing silk particles, due to partial solubility of the silk particles in HFIP. The porosity of scaffolds was reduced from ≈90% (control) to ≈75% for the HFIP systems containing 200% particle reinforcement, while maintaining pore interconnectivity. The presence of the particles slowed the enzymatic degradation of silk scaffolds.

The current incarnation of ‘reality TV’ in Australia has a strong focus on the portrayal of everyday life. Although based on ‘real’ situations or people, there is a clear tension between ideas of authenticity and performance.  As a global phenomenon, ‘reality’ formats are produced for local audiences by highlighting aspects of the national culture and identity, with format popularity directly linked to identification and affirmation of the spectacle of ‘reality’. This paper will analyse the use of popular Australian myth in ‘reality’ formats by charting narrative and character construction as an ‘illusory everyday’, with reference to Bondi Rescue (Cordell Jigsaw). The paper will examine the representation of Australian identity through both myth and construction in ‘reality TV’ as the perpetuation of a cultural simulation. Implications for research on the genre and the industry are also discussed.

This article presents finite-element method simulation results of current distribution in an aluminum electrolytic cell. The model uses one quarter of the cell as a computational domain assuming longitudinal (along the length of the cell) and transverse axes of symmetries. The purpose of this work is to closely examine the impact of steel and copper collector bars on the cell current distribution. The findings indicated that an inclined steel collector bar (φ = 1°) can save up to 10–12 mV from the cathode lining in comparison to a horizontal 100 mm × 150-mm steel collector bar. It is predicted that a copper collector bar has a much higher potential of saving cathode voltage drop (CVD) and has a greater impact on the overall current distribution in the cell. A copper collector bar with 72% of cathode length and size of 100 mm × 150 mm is predicted to have more than 150 mV savings in cathode lining. In addition, a significant improvement in current distribution over the entire cathode surface is achieved when compared with a similar size of steel collector bar. There is a reduction of more than 70% in peak current density value due to the higher conductivity of copper. Comparisons between steel and copper collector bars with different sizes are discussed in terms CVD and current density distribution. The most important aspect of the findings is to recognize the influence of copper collector bars on the current distribution in molten metal. Lorentz fields are evaluated at different sizes of steel and copper collector bars. The simulation predicts that there is 50% decrease in Lorentz force due to the improvement in current distribution in the molten metal.

A condition monitoring system for induction motors using a hybrid Fuzzy Min-Max (FMM) neural network and Genetic Algorithm (GA) is presented in this paper. Two types of experiments, one from the finite element method and another from real laboratory tests of broken rotor bars in an induction motor are conducted. The induction motor with broken rotor bars is operated under different load conditions. FMM is first used for learning and distinguishing between a healthy motor and one with broken rotor bars. The GA is then utilized for extracting fuzzy if-then rules using the don’t care approach in minimizing the number of rules. The results clearly demonstrate the effectiveness of the hybrid FMM-GA model in condition monitoring of broken rotor bars in induction motors.

Abstract: In this experimental study, the reinforcing effects of graphene oxide (GO) on portland cement paste are investigated. It is discovered that the introduction of 0.03% by weight GO sheets into the cement paste can increase the compressive strength and tensile strength of the cement composite by more than 40% due to the reduction of the pore structure of the cement paste. Moreover, the inclusion of the GO sheets enhances the degree of hydration of the cement paste. However, the workability of the GO-cement composite becomes somewhat reduced. The overall results indicate that GO could be a promising nanofillers for reinforcing the engineering properties of portland cement paste.

Titanium alloys are widely used in various engineering design application due to its superior material properties. The traditional manufacturing of titanium products is always difficult, time consuming, high material wastage and manufacturing costs. Selective laser melting (SLM), an additive manufacturing technology has widely gained attention due to its capability to produce near net shape components with less production time. In this technical paper, microstructure, chemical composition, tensile properties and hardness are studied for the wrought and additive manufactured SLM cylindrical bar. Microstructure, mechanical properties and hardness were studied in both the longitudinal and transverse directions of the bar to study the effect of orientation. It was found that additive manufactured bar have higher yield strength, ultimate tensile strength and hardness than the wrought bar. For both conventional and SLM test samples, the yield strength, ultimate tensile strength and hardness was found to be high in the transverse direction. The difference in the properties can be attributed to the difference in microstructure as a result of processing conditions. The tensile fracture area was quantified by careful examination of the fracture surfaces in the scanning electron microscope.
