Mechanization of fishing craft and the use of improved fishing gear

Since the year 1925, attention has been focused periodically on the stagnation in the local fishing industry, and those who have studied the subject have been unanimous about the need to introduce modern fishing craft which are capable of working more fishing gear. This report outlines the stages through which the evolution of more effective fishing operations has progressed, both in the gradually increasing use of mechanical propulsion for boats and in the adoption of more modern gear and techniques by local fishermen. No reference is made in this report to the operation of deep-sea trawlers (Sivalingam, 1956) a phase of development which has hitherto not influenced the local fishing industry to any appreciable extent.

Commercial small craft pair trawling trials Lake Chilwa, Malawi 1971

The results are reported of commercial small craft pair trawling trials conducted on Lake Chilwa from May to August 1971. Type of vessels and equipment used and the fishing method and operation employed are described and design data given for the different trawls used. The effects on catching efficiency of varying amounts of small mesh netting trawls are dealt with and recommendations made for trawls design modifications.

Chlorohydrin water swellable rubber compatibilized by an amphiphilic craft copolymer. I. Synthesis and characterization of compatibilizer PVA-g-PBA

The graft copolymerization of butyl acrylate onto poly(vinyl alcohol) with eerie ammonium nitrate as redox initiator in a aqueous medium has been investigated. The formation of graft copolymer was confirmed by means of IR, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD). The percentage of mononer conversion and percentage of grafting varied with concentrations of initiator, nitric acid, monomer, macromolecular backbone (X-n = 1750, M = 80 000), reaction temperature and reaction time. Some inorganic salts and organic solvents have a great influence upon grafting. The reaction mechanism has been explored, and rate equations for the reaction are established. A multi-technology approach to identifying the reasons for lateral drift in professional and recreational darts

This work performs an extensive charterisation of precision targeted throwing in professional and recreational darts. The goal is to identify the contributing factors for lateral drift or throwing inaccuracy in the horizontal plane. A multitechnology approach is adopted whereby a custom built body area network of wireless inertial measurement devices monitor tilt, force and timing, an optical 3D motion capture system provides a complete kinematic model of the subject, electromyography sensors monitor muscle activation patterns and a force plate and pressure mat capture tactile pressure and force measurements. The study introduces the concept of constant throwing rhythm and highlights how landing errors in the horizontal plane can be attributable to a number of variations in arm force and speed, centre of gravity and the movements of some of the bodies non throw related extremities.

Creative environments for art, craft & design teaching in the 21st century

This booklet has been designed for student teachers in particular and those in their early years as teachers of art, craft and design.
