A new successive displacement type load flow method is developed in this paper. This algorithm differs from the conventional Y-Bus based Gauss Seidel load flow in that the voltages at each bus is updated in every iteration based on the exact solution of the power balance equation at that node instead of an approximate solution used by the Gauss Seidel method. It turns out that this modified implementation translates into only a marginal improvement in convergence behaviour for obtaining load flow solutions of interconnected systems. However it is demonstrated that the new approach can be adapted with some additional refinements in order to develop an effective load flow solution technique for radial systems. Numerical results considering a number of systems-both interconnected and radial, are provided to validate the proposed approach.

In this paper, we propose a H.264/AVC compressed domain human action recognition system with projection based metacognitive learning classifier (PBL-McRBFN). The features are extracted from the quantization parameters and the motion vectors of the compressed video stream for a time window and used as input to the classifier. Since compressed domain analysis is done with noisy, sparse compression parameters, it is a huge challenge to achieve performance comparable to pixel domain analysis. On the positive side, compressed domain allows rapid analysis of videos compared to pixel level analysis. The classification results are analyzed for different values of Group of Pictures (GOP) parameter, time window including full videos. The functional relationship between the features and action labels are established using PBL-McRBFN with a cognitive and meta-cognitive component. The cognitive component is a radial basis function, while the meta-cognitive component employs self-regulation to achieve better performance in subject independent action recognition task. The proposed approach is faster and shows comparable performance with respect to the state-of-the-art pixel domain counterparts. It employs partial decoding, which rules out the complexity of full decoding, and minimizes computational load and memory usage. This results in reduced hardware utilization and increased speed of classification. The results are compared with two benchmark datasets and show more than 90% accuracy using the PBL-McRBFN. The performance for various GOP parameters and group of frames are obtained with twenty random trials and compared with other well-known classifiers in machine learning literature. Organophosphorus-based nerve agents, such as paraoxon, parathion, and malathion, inhibit acetylcholinesterase, which results in paralysis, respiratory failure, and death. Bacteria are known to use the enzyme phosphotriesterase (PTE) to break down these compounds. In this work, we designed vacancy-engineered nanoceria (VE CeO2 NPs) as PTE mimetic hotspots for the rapid degradation of nerve agents. We observed that the hydrolytic effect of the nano-material is due to the synergistic activity between both Ce3+ and Ce4+ ions located in the active site-like hotspots. Furthermore, the catalysis by nanoceria overcomes the product inhibition generally observed for PTE and small molecule-based PTE mimetics.

A new set of continuous superresolution filters is proposed which exhibits a radial superresolution performance with an extended depth of focus in an optical system by properly choosing the design parameters. Numerical simulation results of the performance parameters of the superresolution gain, the radial central core size, the Strehl ratio, the side-lobe factor and the depth of focus with different design parameters for the optimized patterns are displayed. We also give a design example for this kind of filter characterized by a birefringent element inserted between two parallel polarizers. This kind of filter would be useful in fields such as optical data storage systems.

Questões climáticas, atmosféricas e de poluição ambiental têm tornado o uso final da energia assunto de interesse mundial. Sistemas com tração elétrica oferecem a oportunidade de redução de emissões. O mix de energia caracterizado pela matriz energética brasileira viabiliza o desenvolvimento desta tecnologia. É desenvolvida aqui uma metodologia para conversão de veículos equipados com motores a combustão interna para tração elétrica. A metodologia considera fatores como o peso e tamanho, o torque de partida, transmissão e potência, entre outros. Ferramentas matemáticas e a prática corrente fornecem a base para a elaboração deste trabalho, que descreve a análise de desempenho de veículos elétricos, os componentes utilizados, as equações mecânicas e os critérios para escolha do veículo ideal para conversão. É apresentada a execução de um projeto de conversão de uma Kombi para tração elétrica, cujo objetivo tem caráter educativo, buscando assim promover os benefícios da tecnologia veicular elétrica. Para viabilização do experimento, o trabalho conclui que é necessário ampliar a demanda por nacionalização de tecnologia, o que tornaria o projeto uma realidade comercialmente viável. Além disto, há necessidade de políticas públicas para o incentivo da tecnologia veicular elétrica no Brasil. Este trabalho apresenta uma contribuição para converter veículos para tração elétrica, visto que sistematiza as etapas de projeto, a partir das quais outros poderão seguir, utilizando componentes encontrados no mercado nacional.
