Infrared spectra of substituted benzoyl chlorides and benzoyl bromides have been studied. The extent of splitting of the carbonyl band in benzoyl chlorides varies with substitution. While benzoyl bromide shows the carbonyl band as a single peak, para-nitrobenzoyl bromide shows a doublet. The results are interpreted in terms of intramolecular vibration effects (Fermi resonance). The intense band in the 860–880 cm−1 region in benzoyl chloride and benzoyl bromide has been assigned to the Ph-C stretching vibration.

Raman spectra of single crystals of diglycine hydrochloride, diglycine hydrobromide and diglycine nitrate have been recorded for the first time. λ 2536·5 resonance radiation of mercury has been used as exciter. The spectrum of diglycine hydrochloride exhibits 10 low frequency lines and 41 lines due to internal oscillations, while that of diglycine hydrobromide exhibits 11 lines and 41 lines respectively. In the case of diglycine nitrate 46 lines have been recorded, of which 10 belong to the lattice spectrum. These spectra are compared with the Raman spectra of triglycine sulphate and α-glycine and proper assignments have been given to the internal oscillations.

We report the first electron paramagnetic resonance studies of single crystals and powders of Pr0.6Ca0.4MnO3 in the 300-4.2 K range, covering the charge-ordering transition (Tco) at ~240 K and antiferromagnetic transition (TN) at ~170 K. The asymmetry parameter for the Dysonian single-crystal spectra shows an anomalous increase at Tco. Below Tco the g-value increases continuously, suggesting a gradual strengthening of the orbital ordering. The linewidth undergoes a sudden increase at Tco and continues to increase down to TN. The intensity increases as the temperature is decreased until Tco is reached, due to the renormalization of the magnetic susceptibility arising from the build-up of ferromagnetic correlations.

Chlorine has been substituted at the 2- and 4-positions in the pyridine and quinoline rings of the corresponding N-oxides and 35Cl n.q.r. spectra have been studied in the temperature range 77–300 K. The change in the n.q.r. frequencies in N-oxides as compared to their parent compounds are interpreted in terms of the conjugative effect and the inductive effect of the N+—O– group. The negative temperature coefficients of the resonance frequencies in chloropyridine-N-oxides have been analysed using the Bayer, Kushida and Brown equations. The calculated torsional frequencies, which are in the range 52–78 cm–1, are found to be only slightly temperature dependent.

Single crystal E.P.R. studies of copper as a dopant in lithium potassium sulphate, lithium ammonium sulphate and lithium sodium sulphate have been carried out from room temperature down to 77K. The three Jahn-Teller (JT) systems behave very similarly to one another. The room temperature dynamic JT spectra with giso = 2·19 ± 0·01 and Aiso = ±(33 ± 4) times 10-4 cm-1 transform around 247 K to spectra characterized by randomly frozen-in axial strains with g‖ = 2·4307 ± 0·0005, g⊥ = 2·083 ± 0·001, A‖ = ±(116 ± 2) times 10-4 cm-1 and A⊥ = ∓(14 ± 4) times 10-4 cm-1. We proposed that the low temperature phase (below 247 K) of each of these systems provides an example of a Jahn-Teller glass.

Extraction of formant information from linear-prediction phase spectra is proposed. It is shown that the derivative of phase spectrum gives reliable formant information. Since the phase spectra for several resonators in cascade are additive, the resonance peaks are additive in the derivative of the phase spectrum unlike in the magnitude spectrum and hence the problem of identifying merged peaks is very easily solved by this method. Application of the method is illustrated through examples of linear-prediction spectra obtained for simulated models and for actural speech segments.

The proton-decoupled 13C NMR spectra of mixtures of liquid crystals with opposite diamagnetic anisotropies have been studied in the natural abundance of 13C. A new method to assign the spectral lines to specific carbons in the liquid crystalline phase has been developed. For this purpose, the assignments of lines in the isotropic media are required, and they were obtained from two-dimensional hetero-COSY experiments. From the spectra in the critical mixtures where both the orientations of the liquid crystal directors, with the alignments along and perpendicular to the direction of the magnetic field, coexist, the 13C chemical-shift anisotropies have been determined, assuming uniaxial symmetry.

The conformation and stability of pearl millet prolamin (pennisetin) were examined by using circular dichroism and C-13 nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The far UV spectrum of pennisetin in 70% (v/v) aqueous ethanol showed the presence of predominant alpha-helical structure and its occurrence in the alpha + beta class of protein. The far and near UV spectra of pennisetin in ethanol: trifluoroethanol also supported this observation. However pennisetin showed the presence of some helical structure in 8 M urea which is known to be a highly unordered structure forming solvent. A decrease in alpha helical content of native pennisetin was observed with rise in temperature from 5-75-degrees-C and this effect of temperature was found to be reversible. A C-13 NMR spectrum of pennisetin in 70% ethanol suggested a high degree of molecular mobility in ethanol. Comparison of the cross polarization spectrum with the single pulse excitation spectrum suggested pennisetin to be a heterogeneous protein.

The use of the intensities of the spinning sidebands in the magic-angle spinning spectra of oriented molecules is proposed for the determination of the signs of the order parameters. The method is demonstrated for benzene and chloroform oriented in nematic phases of liquid crystals. On the basis of the theoretical expressions derived for the various order sidebands, the applicability of the method for different experimental conditions is discussed.

NMR spectra of cis,cis-mucanonitrile oriented in a liquid crystal have been analysed using the connectivity information obtained from a modified Z-COSY experiment which provided crucial clues for the starting parameters for the iterative analysis. The proton spectra with and without C-13 satellites and the C-13 spectra have thus been interpreted. The indirect spin-spin couplings required for the analyses have been obtained from the corresponding isotropic spectra. The H-1-H-1 and C-13-H-1 dipolar couplings so obtained have been utilized to determine the relative internuclear distances. The results indicate that the molecule is planar. The spinning sidebands observed in the C-13 MAS NMR spectra of cis,cis-mucononitrile oriented in liquid-crystalline media and of the neat sample in the solid state are studied. There are differences in the sideband intensity patterns in the two cases. These differences arise because the order parameters which characterize the orientation of the solute in the liquid-crystalline media differ for different axes. It is shown that, in general, the relative intensities of the sidebands contain information on the sign and magnitude of an effective chemical-shift parameter which is a function of the sum of the products of the principal components of the chemical-shift tensor and the corresponding order parameters with respect to the director. A method for obtaining the orientation of the carbon chemical-shift tensor is proposed. The carbon chemical-shift tensors obtained from gauge-including atomic orbital calculations are also presented for comparison. (C) 1996 Academic Press, Inc.

Time-resolved resonance Raman spectroscopy has been used to investigate the photochemistry of ubiquinone in cyclohexane, water and ethanol. In water the absorption of a single 248 nm photon produces triplet ubiquinone which then oxidises water, via electron transfer, to form the ubiquinone radical anion. In ethanol, however, the triplet state reacts with the solvent via both electron and hydrogen-atom transfer, the latter process forming the semihydroquinone. Only in the less reactive solvent, cyclohexane, is triplet quinone observed. The Raman bands observed for each of the species are assigned on the basis of similarities of their spectra to other quinones.

Perfluoro substituted organic compounds have attracted attention owing to their unique structure and reactivity induced by the perfluoro effect. Fluoranil, a perfluoro derivative of p-benzoquinone, is the subject of this paper. Although the perfluoro effect in the ground state seems to have been well understood there is no information available about such effects on the excited state. Here, the time-resolved resonance Raman spectra of the triplet excited state of fluoranil are reported along with the Raman excitation profiles (REPs) of the various vibrational modes. The vibrational spectral analyses have been carried out by analogy with the fluoranil ground state, triplet benzoquinone, and triplet chloranil vibrational spectral assignments. Also, the assignments are further supported by the calculated frequencies using ab initio theoretical methods. It is observed that for fluoranil in the triplet excited state, due to the perfluoro effect, the structure is considerably less distorted than benzoquinone and also the electron delocalization in the pi* antibonding orbital is less than that of triplet excited state of benzoquinone.

Quinones play a vital role in the process of electron transfer in bacterial photosynthetic reaction centers. It is of interest to investigate the photochemical reactions involving quinones with a view to elucidating the structure-function relationships in the biological processes. Resonance Raman spectra of radical anions and the time-resolved resonance Raman spectra of vitamin K-1 (model compound for Q(A) in Rhodopseudomonas viridis, a bacterial photosynthetic reception center) are presented. The photochemical intermediates of vitamin K-1, viz. radical anion, ketyl radical and o-quinone methide have been identified. The vibrational assignments of all these intermediates are made on the basis of comparison with our earlier TR3 studies on radical anions of naphthoquinone and menaquinone.
