Who is the South African retail giant behind the David Jones bid?

Yesterday morning came the news South African retailer Woolworths had offered $4 a share to acquire David Jones, a proposal that has the approval of the department store’s board. This offer, worth an estimated A$2.15 billion, represents a 25% premium over the current share price value. An earlier offer, from rival Myer, was rejected earlier this year. But who is Woolworths? Not to be confused with Australia’s largest supermarket, Woolworths SA is one of South Africa’s largest retailers.

David Jones seeks to exploit top end gap in Australian grocery

While Australia’s supermarkets continue to battle on price, the South African owner of David Jones, Woolworths Holdings, has found a gap in the Australian grocery market and is preparing to exploit it. Reports that the group has appointed Pieter de Wet to overhaul the David Jones food business signals once again the ever-changing face of the Australian food and grocery landscape. A re-energised David Jones food offer will provide positive outcomes for both shoppers and suppliers, while potentially becoming another headache for Coles and Woolworths.

To the Mothers of the Twelve Thousand.

The size of the work and the printed title suggests, that this is a poster. It bears the emblem R.J.F., for the sponsoring organization, Reichsbund Juedischer Frontsoldaten or National Organization of the Jewish Front-line Soldiers. The mothers of "The twelve thousand" refers to the Jewish soldiers killed during World War I, when reminding Germans of the patriotism and sacrifices of German Jews, seemed important in view of the discrimination they were confronted with at the time, in 1935.

Primarily autographs, photos, writings, speeches, and biographical material, collected by Bisno, relating to ca. 120 Jews who have attained prominence in American public life; together with papers (1923-32) from Congregation Talmud Torah of Los Angeles, letters (1928-37) relating to other Jewish organizations in Los Angeles, and 3 letters of Stephen S. Wise, dealing with the general Jewish situation in Europe in 1933 and with the question of Jewish participation in the 1936 Olympic games. Persons represented include Benjamin N. Cardozo, Abe Fortas, Felix Frankfurter, Henry Horner, Herbert H. Lehman, and Lewis L. Strauss.

Contains also correspondence arranged alphabetically including letters from the staff of the American Hebrew, the American Jewish Committee, Theodor Herzl, the Jewish Agricultural and Industrial Aid Society, the Jewish Publication Society of America, Max J. Kohler, Louis Marshall, Jacob H. Schiff, Oscar S. Straus, Henrietta Szold, Stephen S. Wise and Israel Zangwill. Contains also material on the structure of the Jewish calendar, correspondence relating to the publication of the Jefferson Bible, correspondence and research material concerning Jewish servicemen in the Spanish-American War (published in the American Jewish year book, 1900-1901), a list of ... of the U.S. Congress, material ... immigration, the Jews in Rus ... cript proof articles from the Jewish quarterly review, numerous published articles by and ... Adler, and a large quantity of manuscript notes and material on Jewish history in general and American Jewish history in particular. Includes also David Sulzberger's collected data pertaining to the Jewish population in the United States-1900.

Galveston immigration plan records undated, 1901-1920.

Collection consists largely of minutes and correspondence from the office of the Jewish Immigrant Information Bureau which administered the Galveston Immigration Plan. Includes correspondence among members of the JIIB, the Industrial Removal Office, the Hilfsverein de Deutschen Juden (Relief Organization of German Jews), the Jewish Colonization Society (ICA), and various Jewish organizations in the United States. Collection also contains many ship passenger lists.

Contains Board of Directors minutes (1903, 1907), Executive Committee minutes (1907), Removal Committee minutes (1903-1917), Annual Reports (1910, 1913), Monthly Reports (1901-1919), Monthly Bulletins (1914-1915), studies of those removed, Bressler's "The Removal Work, Including Galveston," and several papers relating to the IRO and immigration. Financial papers include a budget (1914), comparative per capita cost figures (1909-1922), audits (1915-1918), receipts and expenditures (1918-1922), investment records, bank balances (1907-1922), removal work cash book (1904-1911), office expenses cash account (1903-1906), and the financial records of other agencies working with the IRO (1906). Includes also removal case records of first the Jewish Agricultural Society (1899-1900), and then of the IRO (1901-1922) when it took over its work, family reunion case records (1901-1904), and the follow-up records of persons removed to various cities (1903-1914). Contains also the correspondence of traveling agents' contacts throughout the U.S. from 1905-1914, among them Stanley Bero, Henry P. Goldstein, Philip Seman, and Morris D. Waldman.

[ES]En este trabajo tratamos de esclarecer en qué sentido Hume es relativista con relación a la ética y a la estética. El sentimentalismo inherente a su ética y estética hace que, desde el punto de vista de algunos intérpretes, Hume sea un relativista radical con respecto a dichos ámbitos. Sin embargo, tanto el innegable sentimentalismo de Hume como su supuesto relativismo requieren un profundo estudio. Nos valdremos del concepto de regla general para analizar las relaciones entre sentimentalismo y relativismo, y finalmente argumentaremos que si bien tiene sentido calificar a Hume como relativista, su relativismo es moderado y sensato.

A decline of Eurasian watermilfoil in Minnesota associated with the milfoil weevil, Euhrychiopsis lecontei

Euhrychiopsis lecontei RAYMOND M. NEWMAN 1 AND DAVID D. BIESBOER 2 ABSTRACT The native milfoil weevil, Euhrychiopsis lecontei Dietz, is a candidate biological control agent for the exotic Eurasian watermilfoil ( Myriophyllum spicatum L.) in northern North America. Declines of Eurasian watermilfoil populations have been associated with the weevil but many of these examples are poorly documented. We report the first documented decline of Eurasian watermilfoil in Minnesota due to the milfoil weevil.
