This report is the sixth in the series, "Indications of Public Health in the English Regions" commissioned by the Chief Medical Officer and has been produced jointly by the Association of Public Health Observatories (APHO) and the Health Protection Agency (HPA). Sexual health is identified as one of the key national priorities for action in the White Paper Choosing Health. Influenced by the broad definition of sexual health provided in the National Strategy for Sexual Health and HIV, this report presents regional comparative data on a wide range of indicators of sexual health and its determinants, and highlights apparent inequalities.

South East England public health factsheets

This collection contains a number of factsheets which have been produced by the Department of Health South East (the Department's presence in the region based in the Government Office for the South East) to promote understanding and awareness of key public health issues affecting the health of the population of the region. The factsheets are not policy documents, but are intended to promote good practice among the wider public health workforce in the NHS, Local Authorities and the voluntary and community sector. Each factsheet contains an overview of the extent and impact of the health issue, as well as a summary of the evidence-base regarding 'what works' to improve health. Consultation on Personal and Public Involvement strategy

Personal and Public Involvement (PPI) is an integral element of effective commissioning and is underpinned by a core set of values and principles - involving and listening to people in order to help us make services better.It brings about a number of recognised benefits if fully embraced into our culture and practice, these include:Use of service user knowledge and expertise;Better priority setting and decision making;More responsive, appropriate, efficient and tailored services;Transformation and reduction of complaints;Increased levels of service satisfaction;Increased dignity and self worth.The Public Health Agency (PHA) and Health and Social Care Board (HSCB) have now developed a joint Personal and Public Involvement (PPI) Strategy after extensive engagement and discussion. Organ donation: Public attitudes and stakeholder engagement in Northern Ireland 2013

In June 2013, a representative sample of the public (n=1,012) responded to a survey about their attitudes towards organ donation. At the same time, a process of stakeholder engagement began, which involved 16 discussion groups with key stakeholders as requested by the Health Minister (including organ donation charities, those on the transplant waiting list, transplant recipients, donor families, and Health and Social Care staff). Discussion groups took place between June and August 2013 and proformas were also completed. The central purpose of this public and stakeholder engagement process was to inform the direction of a public information campaign that will be developed by the Public Health Agency (PHA).The�report highlights the findings from this programme of work.

Improving the health and wellbeing of the elderly is the theme of the fourth Director of Public Health annual report, launched on 12 June 2013. Northern Ireland's elderly population is growing and older people are living longer than ever before, which emphasises the importance of providing health and social care that allows them to live a productive life.This report highlights the many areas of public health work aimed at giving elderly people in Northern Ireland the best opportunity to live active and healthy lives in a safe and secure environment. Director of Public Health Annual Report 2014

This is the sixth Director of Public Health Annual Report, detailing the main public health challenges in Northern Ireland. It also provides information on the wide variety of work undertaken by the PHA and its partners during 2014 to improve the health and social wellbeing of the population. Each year, the report focuses on an overarching area, which this year is ‘Adults aged 18–64 years’. The report structure reflects the main areas of public health action: improving health and reducing inequalities; improving health through early detection; improving health through high quality services; improving health through research; protecting health. For ease of reference, the sections are colour coded. On page 94, the report also lists core tables for 2013 relating to key statistical data on, among others, population, birth and death rates, mortality by cause, life expectancy, immunisation and screening. In addition to the core tables, a specific set of tables relating to various aspects of adults aged 18–64 years are published alongside this report.

Prevention of Venous Thromboembolism: A Key Patient Safety Priority

Prevention of venous thromboembolism (VTE) is an important part of our strategy to improve patient safety.The Northern Ireland HSC Safety Forum established and facilitated a regional collaborative which developed a single VTE Risk Assessment Tool for N.Ireland.
