Cyfieithiad yw'r llyfr hwn o Linear Algebra - An Introduction a ymddangosodd gyntaf yn 1978 ac a gyhoeddwyd gan y cwmni Van Nostrand Reinhold. Cafwyd Ail Argraffiad yn 1982 a dros y blynyddoedd bu nifer o ail brintiadau. Yn y cyfamser cyfieithwyd y llyfr i'r Groeg a Thwrceg. Er i'r llyfr gael ei ddefnyddio dros y blynyddoedd gan nifer o fyfyrwyr yn Aberystwyth a oedd yn cyflwyno eu gwaith yn Gymraeg, nid oedd ar gael yn y Gymraeg. Dyma, o'r diwedd, ymgais i wneud rhyw fath o iawn am hynny. Er bod y llyfr wedi bod allan o brint yn y Saesneg ers rhai blynyddoedd yn awr, mae'n amlwg ei fod yn dal i gael ei gymeradwyo mewn nifer o brifysgolion. Felly, y gobaith yw y bydd o ddefnydd. Efallai mai'r peth nesaf bydd ei gyfiethu'n ?l i'r Saesneg! Mae nifer o newidiadau yn y fersiwn hwn. Mae'n siwr bod nifer o gamgymeriadau ac efallai gwelliannau posibl i'r cyfieithu - byddwn yn ddiolchgar dderbyn unrhyw awgrymiadau. Gellir eu cyflwyno hefyd drwy Dr Gwion Evans o'r Adran Fathemateg, Prifysgol Aberystwyth.

Semiconductor nanowires, particularly group 14 semiconductor nanowires, have been the subject of intensive research in the recent past. They have been demonstrated to provide an effective, versatile route towards the continued miniaturisation and improvement of microelectronics. This thesis aims to highlight some novel ways of fabricating and controlling various aspects of the growth of Si and Ge nanowires. Chapter 1 highlights the primary technique used for the growth of nanowires in this study, namely, supercritical fluid (SCF) growth reactions. The advantages (and disadvantages) of this technique for the growth of Si and Ge nanowires are highlighted, citing numerous examples from the past ten years. The many variables involved in this technique are discussed along with the resultant characteristics of nanowires produced (diameter, doping, orientation etc.). Chapter 2 outlines the experimental methodologies used in this thesis. The analytical techniques used for the structural characterisation of nanowires produced are also described as well as the techniques used for the chemical analysis of various surface terminations. Chapter 3 describes the controlled self-seeded growth of highly crystalline Ge nanowires, in the absence of conventional metal seed catalysts, using a variety of oligosilylgermane precursors and mixtures of germane and silane compounds. A model is presented which describes the main stages of self-seeded Ge nanowire growth (nucleation, coalescence and Ostwald ripening) from the oligosilylgermane precursors and in conjunction with TEM analysis, a mechanism of growth is proposed. Chapter 4 introduces the metal assisted etching (MAE) of Si substrates to produce Si nanowires. A single step metal-assisted etch (MAE) process, utilising metal ion-containing HF solutions in the absence of an external oxidant, was developed to generate heterostructured Si nanowires with controllable porous (isotropically etched) and non-porous (anisotropically etched) segments. In Chapter 5 the bottom-up growth of Ge nanowires, similar to that described in Chapter 3, and the top down etching of Si, described in Chapter 4, are combined. The introduction of a MAE processing step in order to “sink” the Ag seeds into the growth substrate, prior to nanowire growth, is shown to dramatically decrease the mean nanowire diameters and to narrow the diameter distributions. Finally, in Chapter 6, the biotin – streptavidin interaction was explored for the purposes of developing a novel Si junctionless nanowire transistor (JNT) sensor.

During the Romantic Era, the character piece flourished and became one of the most important genres. Even though character pieces existed as early as the eighteenth century, it was not until the nineteenth century that Romantic Era literary figures discovered that music was as powerful as any other artistic medium in expressing unspeakable emotions. The character piece allowed composers to express a definite mood, a programmatic idea, or a pictorial association. Character pieces often have titles that suggest briehess or casualness, such as a Beethoven Bagatelle, a Schubert Impromptu or Moment musicaux. Others have expressive programmatic titles, such as Schumann's Kreisleriana and Liszt's Apres une lecture de Dante. Ths dissertation was based on selected works from the nineteenth century and early-twentieth century in order to demonstrate the great variety of musical thought and stylistic development. I have examined composers from different countries and of different nationalities to establish what and how they contributed to the remarkable diversity in this genre. The selected works allowed for very personal programs. These concerts, in addition to being good combinations of pieces, are representative of the genre. The first program consisted of Chopin's Preludes, Op. 28; three pieces from Debussy7s Images Books I and 11; and Liszt7s Apres une lecture de Dante. The second program included seven of Beethoven's Bagatelles, Op. 33; Schumann's Kinderscenen, Op. 15; Poulenc's Mouvements perpetuels and Intermezzo in A-jlat Major; Faure7s Nocturne in B Major, Op. 33, No. 2 and Impromptu No. 2 in F Minor; three of Mompou's Canciones y Danzas; four of Villa-Lobos Prole do bebe Suite No. 1; and Albkniz's Navarra. The third and final program comprised four selections from Rachrnaninoff s Moment musicaux, Op. 16; five pieces from Grieg's Lyric Pieces; and Arensky7s Suite No. 1 for Two Pianos and Suite No. 2 for Two Pianos. I wanted to bring out nuances specific to the individual composers and show how their character pieces helped in shaping the Romantic Era. Even in the twenty-first century, an era of highly specialized musical tastes, the popularity and accessibility of character pieces stand out.

Using a speed-matching task, we measured the speed tuning of the dynamic motion aftereVect (MAE). The results of our Wrst experiment, in which we co-varied dot speed in the adaptation and test stimuli, revealed a speed tuning function. We sought to tease apart what contribution, if any, the test stimulus makes towards the observed speed tuning. This was examined by independently manipulating dot speed in the adaptation and test stimuli, and measuring the eVect this had on the perceived speed of the dynamic MAE. The results revealed that the speed tuning of the dynamic MAE is determined, not by the speed of the adaptation stimulus, but by the local motion characteristics of the dynamic test stimulus. The role of the test stimulus in determining the perceived speed of the dynamic MAE was conWrmed by showing that, if one uses a test stimulus containing two sources of local speed information, observers report seeing a transparent MAE; this is despite the fact that adaptation is induced using a single-speed stimulus. Thus while the adaptation stimulus necessarily determines perceived direction of the dynamic MAE, its perceived speed is determined by the test stimulus. This dissociation of speed and direction supports the notion that the processing of these two visual attributes may be partially independent.

The purpose of this article is to develop a methodological framework for analyzing Policy Coherence for Development (PCD). With this goal, we analyze different views of PCD in order to establish a comprehensive approach of Coherence adapted to globalization process. In this context, the article proposes a methodological framework based on four dimensions of analysis in CPD. In each dimen-sion, we set the areas and actors to investigate and we put forward research questions that could be use as a guide for a comprehensive approach to study PCD.

This paper derives a general procedure for the numerical solution of the Lindblad equations that govern the coherences arising from multicoloured light interacting with a multilevel system. A systematic approach to finding the conservative and dissipative terms is derived and applied to the laser cooling of p-block elements. An improved numerical method is developed to solve the time-dependent master equation and results are presented for transient cooling processes. The method is significantly more robust, efficient and accurate than the standard method and can be applied to a broad range of atomic and molecular systems. Radiation pressure forces and the formation of dynamic dark states are studied in the gallium isotope 66Ga.
