Editorial - Assessment of EAL/D learners : the validity of teachers' professional judgements

Assessment is a recurring theme in this issue of TESOL in Context. It is the focus of a themed section; addressed in some of the award-winning thesis research we feature; and one of several topics in an article on EFL teacher preparation in an Australian university. In the first section of the issue we are pleased to publish précis of the theses produced by the joint winners of the Penny McKay Memorial Award for Best Thesis in Language Education. Penny was a major figure in the development of EAL/D education in Australia (see Dooley & Moore, 2009). Her work is remembered and continued through an Award established by the Australian Council of TESOL Associations (ACTA) and the Applied Linguistics Association of Australia (ALAA). The 2nd International Digital Human Modeling (DHM) Symposium was held at the renowned University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI) in Ann Arbor, Michigan in June 11–13, 2013. The symposium was co-organised by the UMTRI and Penn State University, and endorsed by the IEA Technical Committee on Human Simulation and Virtual Environments. The conference built on the very successful inaugural event DHM2011 held in Lyon two years before; and a decade of digital human modelling conferences held under the auspices of SAE International. Practitioners and scientists from 13 countries gathered to present their state-of-the-art developments and applied research, besides discussing the most recent advances in human modelling and directions for future work in DHM...

Emerging from the shadows: Tax as a research discipline (Editorial)

More than ever, research is playing an important part in supporting proposed tax reforms and finding solutions to Australia’s tax system. Also, for tax academics the importance of quality research is critical in an increasingly competitive tertiary environment. However, life for an academic can be an isolating experience at time, especially if one’s expertise is in an area that many of their immediate colleagues do not share an interest in. Collegiately and the ability to be able to discuss research is seen as critical in fostering the next generation of academics. It is with this in mind that on the 5th of July 2010 the Inaugural Queensland Tax Teachers’ Symposium was hosted by Griffith University at its Southbank campus. The aim was to bring together for one day tax academics in Queensland, and further afield, to present their current research projects and encourage independent tax research. If was for this reason that the symposium was later re-named the Queensland Tax Researchers’ Symposium (QTRS) to reflect its emphasis. The Symposium has been held annually mid-year on four occasions with in excess of 120 attendees over this period. The fifth QTRS is planned for June 2014 to be hosted by James Cook University.

Editorial: Towards intuitive interaction theory

The Special Issue of Interacting with Computers, 2015 showcases the current state of the art in intuitive interaction research. Several papers have showcased new potential methods for both applying and assessing intuitive interaction during early and later phases of the design process. Diefenbach and Ullrich present a new, alternative framework for intuitive interaction, comprised of the four components of gut feeling, verbalizability. Fischer and colleagues paper also reported on an experiment in applying image schemas but in this case they aimed to find a more efficient way of discovering and applying them, in order to find ways to improve the design process as well as assessment of new interfaces. Still and co-researchers had a similar aim, that of establishing what levels and types of knowledge can be most easily and accurately elicited from users in order to be applied to new interfaces. Hespanhol and Tomitsch described strategies for intuitive interaction in public urban spaces. Macaranas and colleagues described an experiment which tested three different full body gestural interfaces to establish which types of mappings were more intuitive, one based on images schemas and two on different previously encountered features from other types of interfaces.

The World Stroke Organization and nursing [Guest Editorial]

The field of neuroscience nursing and, in particular, nursing people with stroke has evolved significantly over the past two decades. Nurses working with people who have had a stroke and their families are called upon to use advanced assessment skills, apply nursing diagnoses across the whole continuum of care, and identify and implement a wide range of interventions. Indeed, in a recent Canadian study on the implementation of stroke best practices, nurses were identified as playing a leading role in many aspects of stroke care and recovery. As the volume of research evidence across disciplines mounts, nurses are challenged to “keep up on the latest”...

Editorial: Research reporting: Clarity and accuracy improve quality

Research publication is one of the final steps in the research process, which begins with development of a research idea. Moving through the process of bringing together collaborators, design of the study protocol, securing of grant or study funding, and obtaining ethic(s) approval to conduct the research, and implementation of the research, analysis and drawing of conclusions based on the data leads to publication of the study results. Although a final step in the research process entails dissemination of the results, many studies go unreported or are improperly reported. Indeed, reviewers have suggested that many randomized controlled trials, observational studies, and qualitative studies lack crucial methodological features or details that lend credibility to study results (Simera et al., 2010).

Editorial: Structure of the case report

The CJNN is one of only two international nursing journals with a focus on neuroscience nursing. We at CJNN (the editorial staff and CANN board of directors) have had to make the difficult decision to reduce publication frequency from quarterly (four times per year) down to three editions per year. The reason behind this decision relates to the current lack of submitted articles for peer review and potential publication in the journal; it is difficult to put out a quality edition with only one or two new manuscripts. We would like to encourage Canadian neuroscience nurses to share their insights and expertise with colleagues by writing about challenges and achievements in patient care, experiences encountered on a daily basis, or about unique/interesting cases that may inform others in their practice.

Media business studies as we see it: Why does it matter, for whom, and how do you get published? [editorial]

To the delight of the renewed editorial team, the Journal of Media Business Studies (JOMBS) receives an increasing number of submissions every week. Given the growing interest in the study of media business, whether from the angle of economics, management, strategy, organisation studies, marketing, consumer behaviour, innovation and entrepreneurship or other contributing disciplines, this editorial aims to clarify how we look at the field and wish to move the journal forward. In particular, we want to address a few questions that we believe are central for those who wish to publish their research with us and thereby contribute to the academic discussion. This article gives a more elaborate explanation to the aims and scope of JOMBS.
