The cyclotron laboratory and the RFQ accelerator in Bern

Two proton accelerators have been recently put in operation in Bern: an 18 MeV cyclotron and a 2 MeV RFQ linac. The commercial IBA 18/18 cyclotron, equipped with a specifically conceived 6 m long external beam line ending in a separate bunker, will provide beams for routine 18-F and other PET radioisotope production as well as for novel detector, radiation biophysics, radioprotection, radiochemistry and radiopharmacy developments. The accelerator is embedded into a complex building hosting two physics laboratories and four Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) laboratories. This project is the result of a successful collaboration between the Inselspital, the University of Bern and private investors, aiming at the constitution of a combined medical and research centre able to provide the most cutting-edge technologies in medical imaging and cancer radiation therapy. The cyclotron is complemented by the RFQ with the primary goals of elemental analysis via Particle Induced Gamma Emission (PIGE), and the detection of potentially dangerous materials with high nitrogen content using the Gamma-Resonant Nuclear Absorption (GRNA) technique. In this context, beam instrumentation devices have been developed, in particular an innovative beam profile monitor based on doped silica fibres and a setup for emittance measurements using the pepper-pot technique. On this basis, the establishment of a proton therapy centre on the campus of the Inselspital is in the phase of advanced study.

The roles of religiosity and affluence for adolescents' family orientation: Multilevel analyses of 18 cultures

Recent sociological and psychological debates concern the nature of the relation between changing religious beliefs and changing significance of the family. The current study analyzes multilevel relations between religiosity (personal and culture-level) and several aspects of family orientation for n = 4902 adolescents from 18 nations/areas from diverse cultural contexts covering a number of religious denominations with data from the Value-of-Children-Study (Trommsdorff & Nauck, 2005). In addition, cultural values from the World Values Survey representing religious versus secular values as well as survival versus self- expression values are examined at the cultural level of analysis as a joint effect with nation-level economic development. Results showed that religiosity/religious values were positively related to all aspects of adolescents’ family orientation at the individual as well as the cultural level, while societal affluence was only related to a loss of importance of the traditional and hierarchical aspects of family orientation. Postmaterialist self-expression values were unrelated to adolescents’ family orientation.

'Era già critico prima di esser poeta', sentenziò il De Sanctis, che arrivava a circoscriverne pure l'esperienza biografica nel perimetro di un implacabile autodafé, definendolo 'più crudele inquisitore di sé che il tribunale dell'Inquisizione'. A ciò poi si aggiungeva l'estrinsecità della corte quale destinataria e quasi principio informativo del mondo tassiano, che sembrava legittimare, da Croce in avanti, tutta una serie di giudizi limitativi sulla sua poesia, orientati ad accentuarne la natura encomiastica, aneddotica, addirittura frivola. La critica più recente ha compiuto un'imponente e fondamentale opera di scavo all'interno della cultura tassiana, delle sue letture, della sua poetica, ma il tentativo di rettificare il profilo complessivo dell'autore mostra esiti ancora incerti. The nature of syntactic impairment in autism

This paper presents a first exploration of the syntactic abilities of autistic children using the framework of truncation theory (Rizzi 1993-4, 2000). It is the first step of an ongoing research project aiming to (a) provide a complete map of syntax in autism, for such work has never been attempted from a sound linguistic perspective (b) develop a targeted remediation program to enhance syntactic abilities of autistic children. Recently, a growing body of work has emphasized the existence of a causal relation between the acquisition of complex syntax (embedding) and the development of a theory of mind (in normally-developing, deaf and autistic children). Early identification and remediation of syntactic deficits is therefore crucial not only to enhance cognitive abilites related to theory of mind, but also because of the critical period hypothesis for language acquisition.
