The adsorption of cationic surfactant cetylpyridinium bromide (CPB) on a glassy carbon (GC) electrode surface has been studied by spectroelectrochemistry with a long optical path length thin-layer cell (LOPTLC) for the first time. A fine adsorption isotherm of CPB molecules from an aqueous solution containing 0.10 M KBr has been obtained over the range of (1.00-8.00) x 10(-5) M. From theoretical calculation and experimental data, adsorption of CPB on the GC electrode surface shows four distinct orientations and three large orientation transitions. Compared with the ordinary isotherm, the differential isotherm is more characteristic and would be suitable for the study of orientation transitions of organic compounds. With a theoretical treatment of the adsorption isotherm, four orientations of adsorbed CPB on a GC electrode surface coincide with the Frumkin-Langmuir type. From adsorption parameters the Frumkin-Langmuir equations, the adsorption free energy and, therefore, the equilibrium constants of orientation transitions of the CPB molecule can be obtained.

A wall-jet cell incorporating a carbon fibre array ring/glassy-carbon disk electrode has been constructed, and characterized by the cyclic voltammetry and flow-injection techniques. The ring (composed of several microdisks) and glassy-carbon disk electrode, can be used separately for different purposes, e.g., detection in solution without a supporting electrolyte, collection/shielding detection with dual-electrode and voltammetric/amperometric detection with series dual-electrode. The electrode shows better collection and shielding effects than usual ring-disk electrode in quiescent solution and the series dual-electrode in a thin-layer flow-through cell. The detection limit at the ring electrode is comparable with that at a conventional-size electrode, and has been used in the mobile phase without a supporting electrolyte, proving to be a promising detector for normal-phase liquid chromatography.

Surface structure of the glassy carbon surface modified with cobalt tetraphenyl-porphyrin (CoTPP) by thermal-treatment has been studied by XPS, DTA and TG. During the thermal treatment a bond can be formed between the glassy carbon surface and TPP. Therefore the stability of electrode for the catalysis of dioxygen reduction is improved. Upon thermal treatment at 600 degrees C, FWHM of Co(2p(2/2)) is broadened, the reason is due to overlapping of peaks of multiple states, the spin orbit separation between Co (2p(1/2)) and Co (2p(3/2)) increases to 15.5-16.3eV, which indicated a change from low spin divalent states, the kinetic energy of Co L3VV Auger line and Auger parameter also increase. These changes of central cobalt ion provide a suitable redox potential for Co(III)/Co(II) which is related to the activity for catalysis of dioxygen reduction.

A bismuth/multi-walled carbon nanotube (Bi/MWNT) composite modified electrode for determination of cobalt by differential pulse adsorptive cathodic stripping voltammetry is described. The electrode is fabricated by potentiostatic pre-plating bismuth film on an MWNT modified glassy carbon (GC) electrode. The Bi/MWNT composite modified electrode exhibits enhanced sensitivity for cobalt detection as compared with the bare GC, MWNT modified and bismuth film electrodes. Numerous key experimental parameters have been examined for optimum analytical performance of the proposed electrode. With an adsorptive accumulation of the Co(II)-dimethylglyoxime complex at -0.8 V for 200 s, the reduction peak current is proportional to the concentration of cobalt in the range of 4.0x10(-11)-1.0x10(-7) mol/L with a lower detection limit of 8.1x10(-11) mol/L. The proposed method has been applied Successfully to cobalt determination in seawater and lake water samples.

Voltammetric methods are applicable for the determination of a wide variety of both organic and inorganic species. Its features are compact equipment, simple sample preparation, short analysis time, high accuracy and sensitivity. Voltammetry is especially suitable for laboratories in which only a few parameters have to be monitored with a moderate sample throughput. Of various electrode materials, glassy carbon electrode is particularly useful because of its high electrical conductivity, impermeability to gases, high chemical resistance, reasonable mechanical and dimensional stability and widest potential range of all carbonaceous electrodes. Electrode modification is a vigorous research area by which the electrochemical determination of various analyte species is facilitated. The scope of pharmaceutical analysis includes the analytical investigation of pure drug, drug formulations, impurities and degradation products of drugs, biological samples containing the drugs and their metabolites with the aim of obtaining data that can contribute to the maximal efficacy and maximal safety of drug therapy. This thesis presents the modification of glassy carbon electrode using metalloporphyrin and dyes and subsequently using these modified electrodes for the determination of various pharmaceuticals. The thesis consists of 9 chapters.

A differential pulse voltammetric sensor for the determination of tamsulosin hydrochloride (TAM) using multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs)–Nafion-modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) has been developed. MWNTs were dispersed in water with the help of Nafion and were used to modify the surface of GCE via solvent evaporation. At MWNT-modified electrode, TAM gave a well-defined oxidation peak at a potential of 1084 mV in 0.1 M acetate buffer solution of pH 5. Compared to the bare electrode, the peak current of TAM showed a marked increase and the peak potential showed a negative deviation. The determination conditions, such as the amount of MWNT–Nafion suspension, pH of the supporting electrolyte and scan rate, were optimised. Under optimum conditions, the oxidation peak current was proportional to the concentration of TAM in the range 1 × 1023 M–3 × 1027 M with a detection limit of 9.8 × 1028 M. The developed sensor showed good stability, selectivity and was successfully used for the determination of TAM in pharmaceutical formulations and urine samples

A nitric oxide biosensor based on cytochrome c (an heme protein) covalently immobilized to poly(5-amino-1-naphthol) by using cyanuric chloride as a bridge was developed. The immobilization was studied by cyclic voltammetry and quartz crystal microbalance. The nitric oxide detection as a function of poly(5-amino-1-naphthol) amount was recorded, and the best result was obtained with the electrode prepared by 70 cycles. The sensitivity and detection limit were 0.015 mu A cm(-2)/mu mol L(-1) and 2.85 mu mol L(-1), respectively. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This work describes the development, electrochemical characterization and utilization of a cobalt phthalocyanine modified carbon nanotube electrode for the quantitative determination of dopamine in 0.2 mol L-1 phosphate buffer contaminated with high concentration of ascorbic acid. The electrode surface was analyzed by cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy which showed a modified surface presenting a charge transfer resistance of 500 Omega, against the 16.46 k Omega value found for the bare glassy carbon surface. A pseudo rate constant value of 5.4 x 10(-4) cm s(-1) for dopamine oxidation was calculated. Voltammetric experiments showed a shift of the peak potential of DA oxidation to less positive value at 390 mV as compared with that of a bare GC electrode at 570 mV. The electrochemical determination of dopamine, in presence of ascorbic acid in concentrations up to 0.1 mol L-1 by differential pulse voltarnmetry, yielded a detection limit as low as 2.56 x 10(-7) mol L-1.

Immobilization of catechol derivatives on GC electrode surfaces can be performed by in situ generation and reduction of nitrocatechol. We present the oxidative nitration of catechol in the presence of nitrous acid followed by electrochemically reduction of the generated nitro aromatic group to the corresponding amine group and its conversion to diazonium cation at the electrode surface to yield a surface covalently modified with catechol. In this manner, some derivatives of catechol can be immobilized on the electrode surface. Whole of the process is carried out in Triethylammonium acetate ionic liquid as an inert and neutral medium (pH∼7.0). Surface coverage can be easily controlled by the applied potential, time and concentration of catechol. After modification, the electrochemical features of modified surface have been studied. Also modified GC electrode exhibited remarkable catalytic activity in the oxidation of NADH. The catalytic currents were proportional to the concentration of NADH over the range 0.01-0.80 mM. This condition can be used for modification of GC surfaces by various aromatic molecules for different application such as design of sensors and biosensors. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The tris(2,2′-bipyridyl) complexes of cobalt(II) and (III) ([Co(bpy)3]2+/3+) produce a redox couple of great interest in thermoelectrochemical cells and dye sensitized solar cells including both types of devices based on ionic liquid electrolytes. We present a systematic study of the electrochemistry of [Co(bpy)3]2+ [NTf2]-2 in two ionic liquids (ILs) based on the 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium (C2mim) cation and two ILs based on the 1-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium cation (C4mpyr), as well as three aprotic molecular solvents. Platinum (Pt) and glassy carbon (GC) working electrodes were compared. In all solvents better electrochemical responses were observed on GC, which yielded higher currents in the cyclic voltammograms and lower rate constants for the redox reaction. The [Co(bpy)3]1+/2+ couple is also readily observed, but this redox reaction is chemically irreversible, possibly because the [Co(bpy)3]1+ complex dissociates. However, the [Co(bpy)3]1+/2+ reaction is chemically reversible in all of the solvents studied, except 3-methoxypropionitrile, if excess of 2,2′-bipyridyl is added to the solution.
