This article gives details of our proposal to replace ordinary chiral SU(3)L×SU(3)R perturbation theory χPT3 by three-flavor chiral-scale perturbation theory χPTσ. In χPTσ, amplitudes are expanded at low energies and small u,d,s quark masses about an infrared fixed point αIR of three-flavor QCD. At αIR, the quark condensate ⟨q¯q⟩vac≠0 induces nine Nambu-Goldstone bosons: π,K,η, and a 0++ QCD dilaton σ. Physically, σ appears as the f0(500) resonance, a pole at a complex mass with real part ≲ mK. The ΔI=1/2 rule for nonleptonic K decays is then a consequence of χPTσ, with a KSσ coupling fixed by data for γγ→ππ and KS→γγ. We estimate RIR≈5 for the nonperturbative Drell-Yan ratio R=σ(e+e−→hadrons)/σ(e+e−→μ+μ−) at αIR and show that, in the many-color limit, σ/f0 becomes a narrow qq¯ state with planar-gluon corrections. Rules for the order of terms in χPTσ loop expansions are derived in Appendix A and extended in Appendix B to include inverse-power Li-Pagels singularities due to external operators. This relates to an observation that, for γγ channels, partial conservation of the dilatation current is not equivalent to σ-pole dominance.

We present results on the nucleon scalar, axial, and tensor charges as well as on the momentum fraction, and the helicity and transversity moments. The pion momentum fraction is also presented. The computation of these key observables is carried out using lattice QCD simulations at a physical value of the pion mass. The evaluation is based on gauge configurations generated with two degenerate sea quarks of twisted mass fermions with a clover term. We investigate excited states contributions with the nucleon quantum numbers by analyzing three sink-source time separations. We find that, for the scalar charge, excited states contribute significantly and to a less degree to the nucleon momentum fraction and helicity moment. Our result for the nucleon axial charge agrees with the experimental value. Furthermore, we predict a value of 1.027(62) in the MS¯¯¯¯¯ scheme at 2 GeV for the isovector nucleon tensor charge directly at the physical point. The pion momentum fraction is found to be ⟨x⟩π±u−d=0.214(15)(+12−9) in the MS¯¯¯¯¯ at 2 GeV.

To understand the late Cenozoic glacial history of the Northern Hemisphere, continuous long-term proxy records from climatically sensitive regions must be examined. Ice-rafted debris (IRD) from Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Site 918, located in the Irminger Basin, is one such record. IRD in marine sediments is a direct indicator of the presence of glacial ice extending to sea level on adjacent landmasses, and, therefore, is an important paleoclimatic signal from the mid- to high latitudes. The IRD record at Site 918 is the first long-term ice-rafting record available for southeast Greenland, a region that may have been a key nucleation area for widespread glaciation during the late Cenozoic (Larsen et al, 1994, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.ir.152.1994). This data report presents the results of coarse sand-size IRD mass accumulation rate (MAR) analyses for Site 918 from the late Miocene through the Pleistocene. In addition, a preliminary analysis of IRD compositions is included. Detailed discussions of the local, regional, and global paleoclimatic implications of this data, and of the companion Site 919 Pleistocene IRD MAR data (Krissek, 1999, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.sr.163.118.1999), are in preparation. Such future work will include comparisons of these IRD MAR data sets to the Site 919 oxygen isotope stratigraphy developed by Flower (1998, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.sr.152.219.1998).

The east coast of the AP is highly influenced by cold and dry air masses stemming from the adjacent Weddell Sea. By the contrary, the west coast jointly with the South Shetland Islands are directly exposed to the humid and relatively warm air masses from the South Pacific Ocean carried by the strong and persistent westerly winds. Systematic glaciological field studies are very scarce on both sides of the AP, among them can be mentioned a mass-balance program performed continuously since summer 1998/99 by the Instituto Antártico Argentino (IAA) on Vega Island, James Ross Archipelago, on the northeastern flank of the AP. Another continuous plurianual glaciological research has been initiated in 2010 jointly by the University of Bonn and the IAA at the Fourcade Glacier on King George Island (KGI) within the framework of the ESF project IMCOAST (FK 03F0617B). Two transects of mass balance stakes were installed from the top of the Warszawa Ice Dome down to the border of the glaciers Fourcade and Polar Club, to serve for calibration and validation of modeling efforts. The stakes were measured at the beginning and end of each summer field campaign in November 2010, February - March 2011, January - March 2012, and especially during the austral winter 2012 up to March 2013 every 10 to 14 days depending on weather conditions. During the austral winter 2013 and until June 2014 the measurements were conducted every 20 to 30 days, weather permitting. Snow density was measured as well in every field trip from June 2012 until June 2104, establishing a rather homogeneous value along the different parts of the glacier. Snow density in late summer, rho_s is usually higher than the one in late winter, rho_w. Seasonal average values were calculated for the area covered by the mass balance stakes, being rho_s= 471 Kg/m**3 and rho_w = 363 Kg/m**3.
