Experimental observations on micromorphologies around broken fibers in glass-fiber-reinforced epoxy matrix composites reveal different kinds of highly oriented patches at the circumambience of broken fibers, whereas the bulk of the matrix has been observed to be largely isotropic. These patches are interpreted to correlated areas where the stress gradients of the matrix are formed after fiber breaking, but the underlying cause for the orientation is still unknown. The authors have modified an embedded cell model to explain the experimental phenomena. The finite element simulation indicates that the surfaces around broken fibers display a change from an extension micromorphology to a mixed tension and shear micromorphology with the increase of applied strain.

The damage evolution of fiber-reinforced polypropylene-matrix composites with matrix defects was studied via a Monte Carlo technique combined with a finite element method. A finite element model was constructed to predict the effects of various matrix defect shapes on the stress distributions. The results indicated that a small matrix defect had almost no effect on fiber stress distributions other than interfacial shear stress distributions. Then, a finite element model with a statistical distribution of the fiber strength was constructed to investigate the influences of the spatial distribution and the volume fraction of matrix defects on composite failure. The results showed that it was accurate to use the shear-lag models and Green's function methods to predict the tensile strength of composites even though the axial stresses in the matrix were neglected.

0-3 connectivity piezoelectric composites lead zirconate titanate(PZT)/polyvinylidene fluoride(PVDF) were prepared. Crystallininity and microstructure of the samples were characterized by SEM, FTIR and WAXD. The results indicated that the PZT powder was blended with non-crystalline phase of PVDF. The composites presented different net-morphology. PVDF existed as g crystalline phase in the composites. The composites presented island type structure with low content of PZT and hard sphere stack in irregular type with high content of PZT.

To simulate the deformation and the fracture of gradual multi-fiber-reinforced matrix composites, a numerical simulation method for the mesoscopic mechanical behaviors was developed on the basis of the finite element and the Monte Carlo methods. The results indicate that the strength of a composite increases if the variability of statistical fiber strengths is decreased.

The stress transfer from broken fibers to unbroken fibers in fiber-reinforced thermosetting polymer-matrix composites and thermoplastic polymer-matrix composites was studied using a detailed finite element model. In order to check the validity of this approach, an epoxy-matrix monolayer composite was used as thermosetting polymer-matrix composite and a polypropylene (PP)-matrix monolayer composite was used as thermoplastic polymer-matrix composite, respectively. It is found that the stress concentrations near the broken fiber element cause damage to the neighboring epoxy matrix prior to the breakage of other fibers, whereas in the case of PP-matrix composites the fibers nearest to the broken fiber break prior to the PP matrix damage, because the PP matrix around the broken fiber element yields. In order to simulate composite damage evolution, a Monte Carlo technique based on a finite element method has been developed in the paper. The finite element code coupled with statistical model of fiber strength specifically written for this problem was used to determine the stress redistribution. Five hundred samples of numerical simulation were carried out to obtain statistical deformation and failure process of composites with fixed fiber volume fraction.

The shear fracture morphology of SCF/PEK-C composite with carbon fibers treated for different times was studied carefully by SEM. The result shows that the adhesion between fiber and matrix was improved and fractured model also changed from interface fracture to brittle fracture with increasing treatment time of carbon fiber. The fracture mechanism was discussed preliminary.

The mechanical properties of glass fiber-reinforced phenolphthalein poly(ether ketone)/poly(phenylene sulfide) (PEK-C/PPS) composites have been studied. The morphologies of fracture surfaces were observed by scanning electron microscope. Blending a semicrystalline component, PPS, can improve markedly the mechanical properties of glass fiber-reinforced PEK-C composites. These results can be attributed to the improvement of fiber/matrix interfacial adhesion and higher fiber aspect ratio. (C) 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Piezoelectric composites consisting of spherically anisotropic piezoelectric inclusions (i.e., piezoceramic material) in an infinite nonpiezoelectric matrix under a uniform electric field are theoretically investigated. Analytical solutions for the elastic displacements and the electric potentials are derived exactly. Taking account of the coupling effects of elasticity, permittivity, and piezoelectricity, formulas are derived for the effective dielectric and piezoelectric responses in the dilute limit. A piezoelectric response mechanism is revealed, in which the effective piezoelectric response vanishes irrespective of how much spherically anisotropic piezoelectric inclusions are inside. Moreover, the effective coupled responses of the piezoelectric composites show that the effective dielectric responses decrease (increase) as the inclusion elastic (piezoelectric) constants increase.

A graded piezoelectric composite consisting of a spherically anisotropic graded piezoelectric inclusion imbedded in an infinite nonpiezoelectric matrix, with the physical properties of the graded spherical inclusion having a power-law profile with respect to the radial variable r, is studied theoretically. Under an external uniform electric field, the electric displacement field and the elastic stress tensor field of this spherically anisotropic graded piezoelectric composite are derived exactly by means of displacement separation technique, based on the governing equations in the dilute limit. A piezoelectric response mechanism, in which the effective piezoelectric response vanishes along the z direction (or x,y directions), is revealed in this kind of graded piezoelectric composites. Furthermore, it is found that the effective dielectric constant decreases (or increases) with the volume fraction p of the inclusions if the exponent parameter k of the grading profile is larger (or smaller) than a critical value. This article investigates the damage imparted on load-bearing carbon fibers during the 3D weaving process and the subsequent compaction behavior of 3D woven textile preforms. The 3D multi-layer reinforcements were manufactured on a textile loom with few mechanical modifications to produce preforms with fibers orientated in the warp, weft, and through-the-thickness directions. Tensile tests were conducted on three types of commercially available carbon fibers, 12k HTA, 6k HTS, and 3k HTS in an attempt to quantify the effect of fiber damage induced during the 3D weaving process on the mechanical and physical performance of the fiber tows in the woven composite. The tests were conducted on fiber tows sampled from different locations in the manufacturing process from the bobbin, through the creel and loom mechanism, to the final woven fabric. Mechanical and physical testing were then conducted to quantify the tow geometry, orientation and the effect of compaction during manufacture of two styles of 3D woven composite by vacuumassisted resin transfer molding (VaRTM).

Injection-molded short- and long-glass fiber/polyamide 6,6 composites were subjected to tensile tests. To measure the effectiveness of the fibers in reinforcing the composites, a computational approach was employed to compute the fiber– matrix ISS, orientation factor, reinforcement efficiency, tensile-, and fiber length-related properties. Although the LFCs showed great improvement in fiber characteristics compared to the SFCs, enhancement in tensile properties was small, which is believed to be due to the larger fiber diameter. Kelly–Tyson model provides good approximation for the computation of ISS and tensile-related properties.
