We present a study on the development and the evaluation of a fully automated radio-frequency glow discharge system devoted to the deposition of amorphous thin film semiconductors and insulators. The following aspects were carefully addressed in the design of the reactor: (1) cross contamination by dopants and unstable gases, (2) capability of a fully automated operation, (3) precise control of the discharge parameters, particularly the substrate temperature, and (4) high chemical purity. The new reactor, named ARCAM, is a multiplasma-monochamber system consisting of three separated plasma chambers located inside the same isothermal vacuum vessel. Thus, the system benefits from the advantages of multichamber systems but keeps the simplicity and low cost of monochamber systems. The evaluation of the reactor performances showed that the oven-like structure combined with a differential dynamic pumping provides a high chemical purity in the deposition chamber. Moreover, the studies of the effects associated with the plasma recycling of material from the walls and of the thermal decomposition of diborane showed that the multiplasma-monochamber design is efficient for the production of abrupt interfaces in hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) based devices. Also, special attention was paid to the optimization of plasma conditions for the deposition of low density of states a-Si:H. Hence, we also present the results concerning the effects of the geometry, the substrate temperature, the radio frequency power and the silane pressure on the properties of the a-Si:H films. Deficits in the processing of sensory reafferences have been suggested as accounting for age-related decline in motor coordination. Whether sensory reafferences are accurately processed can be assessed based on the bimanual advantage in tapping: because of tapping with an additional hand increases kinesthetic reafferences, bimanual tapping is characterized by a reduced inter-tap interval variability than unimanual tapping. A suppression of the bimanual advantage would thus indicate a deficit in sensory reafference. We tested whether elderly indeed show a reduced bimanual advantage by measuring unimanual (UM) and bimanual (BM) self-paced tapping performance in groups of young (n = 29) and old (n = 27) healthy adults. Electroencephalogram was recorded to assess the underlying patterns of oscillatory activity, a neurophysiological mechanism advanced to support the integration of sensory reafferences. Behaviorally, there was a significant interaction between the factors tapping condition and age group at the level of the inter-tap interval variability, driven by a lower variability in BM than UM tapping in the young, but not in the elderly group. This result indicates that in self-paced tapping, the bimanual advantage is absent in elderly. Electrophysiological results revealed an interaction between tapping condition and age group on low beta band (14âeuro"20 Hz) activity. Beta activity varied depending on the tapping condition in the elderly but not in the young group. Source estimations localized this effect within left superior parietal and left occipital areas. We interpret our results in terms of engagement of different mechanisms in the elderly depending on the tapping mode: a âeuro~kinestheticâeuro? mechanism for UM and a âeuro~visual imageryâeuro? mechanism for BM tapping movement.

Background: oscillatory activity, which can be separated in background and oscillatory burst pattern activities, is supposed to be representative of local synchronies of neural assemblies. Oscillatory burst events should consequently play a specific functional role, distinct from background EEG activity – especially for cognitive tasks (e.g. working memory tasks), binding mechanisms and perceptual dynamics (e.g. visual binding), or in clinical contexts (e.g. effects of brain disorders). However extracting oscillatory events in single trials, with a reliable and consistent method, is not a simple task. Results: in this work we propose a user-friendly stand-alone toolbox, which models in a reasonable time a bump time-frequency model from the wavelet representations of a set of signals. The software is provided with a Matlab toolbox which can compute wavelet representations before calling automatically the stand-alone application. En el procés productiu de la indústria alimentària l’aigua és un factor de vital importància, augmentantels volums consumits degut al desenvolupament de la producció. Conseqüentment es genera un granvolum d’aigua residual amb una important càrrega orgànica, causant greus problemes al ser abocadadirectament sobre el medi natural o generant càrregues no assumibles per les EDAR.El tractament de les aigües residuals preocupa als empresaris, pressionats per una legislació cadavegada més exigent. La seva depuració ha de passar d’una situació hostil a treure avantatgeseconòmics, d’imatge i de valor afegit. El projecte es realitza a la indústria d’especejament d’aviram ESPECIALITATS COSTA SLU, situadaa Banyoles. S’estudia la viabilitat d’implantar un sistema de depuració de les seves aigües residualsper a reduir al màxim possible els paràmetres de sortida i complir amb la legislació vigent.Com a conseqüència dels increments de producció i de la inexistència d’un sistema de depuracióeficaç per a complir amb la legislació mediambiental, precisa una nova instal•lació de depuració de lesseves aigües residuals per assolir els límits d’abocament que imposa la legislació vigent.La superfície del solar és de 4.700 m2 i l’àrea construïda de 3.310 m2. L’empresa també disposa d’unsolar a l’altra banda del carrer Barcelona, que actualment s’utilitza com a pàrquing, i és on s’ubicarienles instal•lacions del present projecte

Diplomityö käsittelee kiehutusvesilaitosten transienttien ja onnettomuuksien analysointia APROS-ohjelmiston avulla. Työ on tehty Teollisuuden Voima Oy:n (TVO) Olkiluoto 1 ja 2 laitosyksiköiden mallin pohjalta. Raportissa esitetään ohjelmiston käyttämiä yhtälöitäja laskentamalleja yleisellä tasolla. Työssä esitellään laitoksen yleispiirteet turvallisuustoimintoineen ja kuvataan ohjelmaan suureksi osaksi aiemmin luotua laskentamallia. Työssä on luetteloitu voimassa olevatlisensiointianalyysit, joiden joukosta on valittu laskentatapauksia ohjelmiston suorituskyvyn arviointia varten. Lisäksi työhön on valittu laskentatapauksia muilla kuin lisensointiin käytetyillä ohjelmilla lasketuista analyyseistä. Lisäksi on suoritettu vertailulaskuja konservatiivisen ja realistisen mallin erojen esille saamiseksi. Laskentatapauksia ovat mm. ylipainetransientti, jäähdytteen menetysonnettomuus ja oletettavissa oleva käyttöhäiriö, jossa pikasulku ei toimi (ATWS). Diplomityön edetessä laitosmallia on kehitetty edelleen lisäämällä joitakin järjestelmiä ja tarkentamalla joidenkin komponenttien kuvausta. Työssä ilmeni, että APROS soveltuu jäähdytteenmenetysonnettomuuden ja suojarakennuksen yhtäaikaiseen analyysiin. APROS.n vaste nopeisiin transientteihin jäi kuitenkin vertailutasosta. Tämän työn perusteella APROS-mallia kehitys jatkuu edelleen siten, että se soveltuisi entistä paremmin myös nopeiden transienttien ja ATWS-tilanteiden kuvaamiseen. Työssä olevaa lisensointianalyysien kuvausta tullaan käyttämään hyväksi selvitettäessä laitoksen turvallisuuden väliarviossa tarvittavien analyysien määrää ja laatua. Nyt saatuja kokemuksia voidaan hyödyntää myös mahdollisen kolmiulotteisen sydänmallin hankinnassa APROS-ohjelmistoon. Tässä diplomityössä esitettyjä parannuksia voidaan käyttää hyväksi SAFIRtutkimusohjelman hankkeiden suunnittelussa.

Gas-liquid mass transfer is an important issue in the design and operation of many chemical unit operations. Despite its importance, the evaluation of gas-liquid mass transfer is not straightforward due to the complex nature of the phenomena involved. In this thesis gas-liquid mass transfer was evaluated in three different gas-liquid reactors in a traditional way by measuring the volumetric mass transfer coefficient (kLa). The studied reactors were a bubble column with a T-junction two-phase nozzle for gas dispersion, an industrial scale bubble column reactor for the oxidation of tetrahydroanthrahydroquinone and a concurrent downflow structured bed.The main drawback of this approach is that the obtained correlations give only the average volumetric mass transfer coefficient, which is dependent on average conditions. Moreover, the obtained correlations are valid only for the studied geometry and for the chemical system used in the measurements. In principle, a more fundamental approach is to estimate the interfacial area available for mass transfer from bubble size distributions obtained by solution of population balance equations. This approach has been used in this thesis by developing a population balance model for a bubble column together with phenomenological models for bubble breakage and coalescence. The parameters of the bubble breakage rate and coalescence rate models were estimated by comparing the measured and calculated bubble sizes. The coalescence models always have at least one experimental parameter. This is because the bubble coalescence depends on liquid composition in a way which is difficult to evaluate using known physical properties. The coalescence properties of some model solutions were evaluated by measuring the time that a bubble rests at the free liquid-gas interface before coalescing (the so-calledpersistence time or rest time). The measured persistence times range from 10 msup to 15 s depending on the solution. The coalescence was never found to be instantaneous. The bubble oscillates up and down at the interface at least a coupleof times before coalescence takes place. The measured persistence times were compared to coalescence times obtained by parameter fitting using measured bubble size distributions in a bubble column and a bubble column population balance model. For short persistence times, the persistence and coalescence times are in good agreement. For longer persistence times, however, the persistence times are at least an order of magnitude longer than the corresponding coalescence times from parameter fitting. This discrepancy may be attributed to the uncertainties concerning the estimation of energy dissipation rates, collision rates and mechanisms and contact times of the bubbles.

Työn teoriaosassa esitetään kirjallisuudessa esiintyviä teoreettisia ja kokeellisia yhtälöitä nesteen nopeuden, kaasun tilavuusosuuden, painehäviön ja lämmönsiirron laskemiseksi. Lisäksi käsitellään airlift-reaktoreiden toimintaa, rakennetta ja teollisia sovelluksia, sekä sekoitusta ja geometrian vaikutusta airlift-reaktoreiden hydrodynaamisiin ominaisuuksiin. Kokeellisessa osassa kuvataan käytetty koelaitteisto ja mittausmenetelmät sekä esitetään saadut koetulokset. Koelaitteisto on viidellä nousuputkella varustettu ulkoisen kierron airlift-reaktori. Kokeellisessa osassa pyritään ratkaisemaan tällaisessa reaktorissa mahdollisesti esiintyviä ongelmia, kuten "slug flown" muodostuminen nousuputkissa sekä fluidien epätasainen jakautuminen nousuputkiin. Lisäksi tutkitaan erilaisten muuttujien, kuten kaasun tilavuusvirran, nesteen viskositeetin, suutinkoon ja nesteen jakoputken rakenteen, vaikutusta kaasun tilavuusosuuteen ja nesteen nopeuteen nousuputkissa. Nesteen nopeudet mitataan merkkiainemenetelmällä ja kaasun tilavuusosuudet manometrimenetelmällä. Lämmönsiirtoa tutkitaan mittaamalla lämpötilaeroja nousuputkissa NiCr-Ni –termoelementeillä. Mittaustulosten perusteella muokataan korrelaatiot kaasun tilavuusosuudelle ja nesteen tyhjäputkinopeudelle. Korrelaatioista lasketut tulokset sopivat kohtuullisen hyvin yhteen mitattujen tulosten kanssa. "Slug flown" ei todettu muodostuvan ongelmaksi 2.5 mPa s pienemmillä viskositeetin arvoilla 2 metriä pitkissä ja 19 mm halkaisijaltaan olevissa putkissa. Lisäksi todettiin, että kaasu- ja nestefaasien jakautumisongelmat voidaan ratkaista rakenteellisesti.

RESUMO O morango é uma fruta de alto valor comercial e tem uma rápida deterioração, como a demanda por produtos saudáveis, seguros sob o ponto de vista microbiológico e livre de produtos químicos aumenta cada vez mais, o método de aplicação do gás ozônio em uma atmosfera controlada foi proposto. O objetivo deste trabalho foi verificar a eficiência do gás ozônio produzido por um reator, a fim de que os pequenos produtores de morangos possam usá-lo, contribuindo, assim, para as economias regionais. Morangos (Fragaria ananassa) variedade Oso Grande, colhidasna região de Minas Gerais foram divididas dois grupos: o primeiro recebeu tratamento com ozônio e o segundo não. No primeiro grupo, o ozônio foi aplicado durante 20 minutos a partir de um reator de Corona. Os frutos foram armazenados a 4 ° C, por períodos de 5, 10 e 15 dias. A qualidade dos frutos foi relata a partir dos níveis de sólidos solúveis totais (SS), acidez titulável (AT ), pH, compostos fenólicos (CF), ácido ascórbico (AA), perda de massa fresca (PM%) e análise microbiológica (AM), em diferentes tempos de armazenamento de frutos ozonizados e não ozonizados. O uso de gás ozônio foi eficiente para a pós-colheita de morango. Os níveis de microrganismos estão dentro dos limites aceitáveis e as propriedades físicas e químicas foram mantidas.

Short-term synaptic depression (STD) is a form of synaptic plasticity that has a large impact on network computations. Experimental results suggest that STD is modulated by cortical activity, decreasing with activity in the network and increasing during silent states. Here, we explored different activity-modulation protocols in a biophysical network model for which the model displayed less STD when the network was active than when it was silent, in agreement with experimental results. Furthermore, we studied how trains of synaptic potentials had lesser decay during periods of activity (UP states) than during silent periods (DOWN states), providing new experimental predictions. We next tackled the inverse question of what is the impact of modifying STD parameters on the emergent activity of the network, a question difficult to answer experimentally. We found that synaptic depression of cortical connections had a critical role to determine the regime of rhythmic cortical activity. While low STD resulted in an emergent rhythmic activity with short UP states and long DOWN states, increasing STD resulted in longer and more frequent UP states interleaved with short silent periods. A still higher synaptic depression set the network into a non-oscillatory firing regime where DOWN states no longer occurred. The speed of propagation of UP states along the network was not found to be modulated by STD during the oscillatory regime; it remained relatively stable over a range of values of STD. Overall, we found that the mutual interactions between synaptic depression and ongoing network activity are critical to determine the mechanisms that modulate cortical emergent patterns.

This paper deals with the structural properties of a-Si:H/a-Si1-xCx: H multilayers deposited by glow-discharge decomposition of SiH4 and SiH4 and CH4 mixtures. The main feature of the rf plasma reactor is an automated substrate holder. The plasma stabilization time and its influence on the multilayer obtained is discussed. A series of a-Si:H/a-Si1-xCx: H multilayers has been deposited and characterized by secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). No asymmetry between the two types of interface has been observed. The results show that the multilayers present a very good periodicity and low roughness. The difficulty of determining the abruptness of the multilayer at the nanometer scale is discussed.

Dopamine release in the prefrontal cortex plays a critical role in cognitive function such as working memory, attention and planning. Dopamine exerts complex modulation on excitability of pyramidal neurons and interneurons, and regulates excitatory and inhibitory synaptic transmission. Because of the complexity of this modulation, it is difficult to fully comprehend the effect of dopamine on neuronal network activity. In this study, we investigated the effect of dopamine on local high-frequency oscillatory neuronal activity (in β band) in slices of the mouse anterior cingulate cortex (ACC). We found that dopamine enhanced the power of these oscillations induced by kainate and carbachol, but did not affect their peak frequency. Activation of D2R and in a lesser degree D1R increased the oscillation power, while activation of D4R had no effect. These high-frequency oscillations in the ACC relied on both phasic inhibitory and excitatory transmission and functional gap junctions. Thus, dopamine released in the ACC promotes high-frequency synchronized local cortical activity which is known to favor information transfer, fast selection and binding of distributed neuronal responses. Finally, the power of these oscillations was significantly enhanced after degradation of the perineuronal nets (PNNs) enwrapping most parvalbumin interneurons. This study provides new insights for a better understanding of the abnormal prefrontal gamma activity in schizophrenia (SZ) patients who display prefrontal anomalies of both the dopaminergic system and the PNNs.

The literature part of the work reviews overall Fischer-Tropsch process, Fischer-Tropsch reactors and catalysts. Fundamentals of Fischer-Tropsch modeling are also presented. The emphasis is on the reactor unit. Comparison of the reactors and the catalysts is carried out to choose the suitable reactor setup for the modeling work. The effects of the operation conditions are also investigated. Slurry bubble column reactor model operating with cobalt catalyst is developed by taking into account the mass transfer of the reacting components (CO and H2) and the consumption of the reactants in the liquid phase. The effect of hydrostatic pressure and the change in total mole flow rate in gas phase are taken into account in calculation of the solubilities. The hydrodynamics, reaction kinetics and product composition are determined according to literature. The cooling system and furthermore the required heat transfer area and number of cooling tubes are also determined. The model is implemented in Matlab software. Commercial scale reactor setup is modeled and the behavior of the model is investigated. The possible inaccuraries are evaluated and the suggestions for the future work are presented. The model is also integrated to Aspen Plus process simulation software, which enables the usage of the model in more extensive Fischer-Tropsch process simulations. Commercial scale reactor of diameter of 7 m and height of 30 m was modeled. The capacity of the reactor was calculated to be about 9 800 barrels/day with CO conversion of 75 %. The behavior of the model was realistic and results were in the right range. The highest uncertainty to model was estimated to be caused by the determination of the kinetic rate.
