A mild protocol that allows the template removal of soft un-aged silica nanoparticles was investigated. After oxidizing the organic template by Fenton chemistry, a good structural preservation is only achieved when the material is equilibrated and dried in a low-surface tension solvent. This avoids excessive capillary stress induced by the high surface tension of water, a major component in the Fenton reaction medium. The Fenton reaction should be carried out under mild conditions as well; otherwise the sample deteriorates by extensive hydrolysis, and capillary stress, and the structural ordering diminishes severely. We propose employing 10 ppm Fe concentration at 70 °C for 24 h for the cetyltrimethylammonium bromide template. The proposed protocol involves 2 steps resulting in an overall significantly higher pore volume attributed to the wider pores and limited particle agglomeration, while the calcined counterpart evidences aggregation and loss of the hexagonal ordering. n-BuOH exchange is unnecessary when the mesophase is stabilized by ageing, as the structure resists the water capillary stress. © The Royal Society of Chemistry 2013.

Central nervous system (CNS) drug delivery is often hampered due to the insidious nature of the blood-brain barrier (BBB). Nose-to-brain delivery via olfactory pathways have become a target of attention for drug delivery due to bypassing of the BBB. The antioxidant properties of phytochemicals make them promising as CNS active agents but possess poor water solubility and limited BBB penetration. The primary aim of this study was the development of mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) loaded with the poorly water-soluble phytochemicals curcumin and chrysin which could be utilised for nose-to-brain delivery. We formulated spherical MSNP using a templating approach resulting in ∼220nm particles with a high surface porosity. Curcumin and chrysin were successfully loaded into MSNP and confirmed through Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and HPLC approaches with a loading of 11-14% for curcumin and chrysin. Release was pH dependant with curcumin demonstrating increased chemical stability at a lower pH (5.5) with a release of 53.2%±2.2% over 24h and 9.4±0.6% for chrysin. MSNP were demonstrated to be non-toxic to olfactory neuroblastoma cells OBGF400, with chrysin (100μM) demonstrating a decrease in cell viability to 58.2±8.5% and curcumin an IC50 of 33±0.18μM. Furthermore confocal microscopy demonstrated nanoparticles of <500nm were able to accumulate within cells with FITC-loaded MSNP showing membrane localised and cytoplasmic accumulation following a 2h incubation. MSNP are useful carriers for poorly soluble phytochemicals and provide a novel vehicle to target and deliver drugs into the CNS and bypass the BBB through olfactory drug delivery.

The ability to tune the structural and chemical properties of colloidal nanoparticles (NPs), make them highly advantageous for studying activity and selectivity dependent catalytic behaviour. Incorporating pre-synthesized colloidal NPs into porous supports materials remains a challenge due to poor wetting and pore permeability. In this report monodisperse, composition controlled AgPd alloy NPs were synthesised and embedded into SBA-15 using supercritical carbon dioxide and hexane. Supercritical fluid impregnation resulted in high metal loading without the requirement for surface pre-treatments. The catalytic activity, reaction profiles and recyclability of the alloy NPs embedded in SBA-15 and immobilised on non-porous SiO2 are evaluated. The NPs incorporated within the SBA-15 porous network showed significantly greater recyclability performance compared to non-porous SiO2.

Three-dimensional ordered mesoporous (3DOM) CuCo2O4 materials have been synthesized via a hard template and used as bifunctional electrocatalysts for rechargeable Li-O2 batteries. The characterization of the catalyst by X-ray diffractometry and transmission electron microscopy confirms the formation of a single-phase, 3-dimensional, ordered mesoporous CuCo2O4 structure. The as-prepared CuCo2O4 nanoparticles possess a high specific surface area of 97.1 m2 g- 1 and a spinel crystalline structure. Cyclic voltammetry demonstrates that mesoporous CuCo2O4 catalyst enhances the kinetics for either oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) or oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The Li-O2 battery utilizing 3DOM CuCo2O4 shows a higher specific capacity of 7456 mAh g- 1 than that with pure Ketjen black (KB). Moreover, the CuCo2O4-based electrode enables much enhanced cyclability with a 610 mV smaller discharge-recharge voltage gap than that of the carbon-only cathode at a current rate of 100 mA g- 1. Such excellent catalytic performance of CuCo2O4 could be associated with its larger surface area and 3D ordered mesoporous structure. The excellent electrochemical performances coupled with its facile and cost-effective way will render the 3D mesoporous CuCo2O4 nanostructures as attractive electrode materials for promising application in Li-O2 batteries.

A 3D mesoporous TiO2 material with well-developed mesostructure is prepared in the form of a binder-free thin (100 nm) film and studied as potential candidate for the negative electrode in lithium microbatteries. By appropriate thermal treatments, the selected crystal structure (anatase, rutile, or amorphous), and micro-/mesostructure of the materials was obtained. The effects of voltage window and prelithiation treatment improved first cycle reversibility up to 86% and capacity retention of 90% over 100 cycles. After a prolonged intercalation of lithium ions in ordered mesoporous TiO2 appeared small particles assigned to Li2Ti2O4 with cubic structure as observed from ex-situ TEM micrographs. This study highlights the flexibility of the potential window to which the electrode can operate. Maximum capacity values over 100 cycles of 470 μA h cm−2 μm−1 and 177 μA h cm−2 μm−1 are obtained for voltage ranges of 0.1–2.6 V and 1.0–2.6 V, respectively. The observed values are between 6 and 2 times higher than those obtained for films with 600 nm (80 μA h cm−2 μm−1) and 900 nm (92 μA h cm−2 μm−1) lengths. This indicates that 100 nm thin TiO2 films with high accessibility show finite-length type diffusion which is interesting for this particular application.

Mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) are exceptionally promising drug carriers for controlled drug delivery systems because their morphology, pore structure, pore volume and pore size can be well tailored to obtain certain drug release profiles. Moreover, they possess the ability to specifically transport and deliver anti-cancer drugs when targeting molecules are properly grafted onto their surface. MSNs based drug delivery systems have the potential to revolutionize cancer therapy. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the fabrication, modification of MSNs and their applications in tumour-targeted delivery. In addition, the characterization and analysis of MSNs with computer aided strategies were described. The existing issues and future prospective concerning the applications of MSNs as drug carriers for controlled drug delivery systems were discussed.

Mesoporous silica supported Ni nanoparticles have been investigated for hydrogen production from ethanol steam reforming. Ethanol reforming is structure-sensitive over Ni, and also dependent on support mesostructure; three-dimensional KIT-6 possessing interconnected mesopores offers superior metal dispersion, steam reforming activity, and on-stream stability against deactivation compared with a two-dimensional SBA-15 support.

Magnetic functionalization of the ordered mesoporous SBA-15 (SiO2) aggregate blocks and rice grain-like particles were realized by using a sol-gel method, resulting in the formation of FexOy@SBA-15 composite materials. The X-ray diffraction (XRD), N-2 adsorption/desorption, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) results show that these composites conserved ordered mesoporous structure after the formation of FexOy nanoparticles in the pores and on the outer surface of SBA-15. It was confirmed by the XRD and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis that the FexOy generated in these mesoporous silica hosts is mainly composed of gamma-Fe2O3. Magnetic measurements reveal that these composites possess superparamagnetic properties at 300 K. The saturation magnetization of these composites increased with the increasing loading amount of gamma-Fe2O3. These composites, which possess high surface area and high pore volume, show magnetic response sufficient for drug targeting in the presence of an external magnetic field.

Luminescence functionalization of the ordered mesoporous SBA-15 silica was realized by depositing a YVO4:Eu3+ phosphor layer on its surface via the Pechini sol-gel process, resulting in the formation of the YVO4:Eu3+@SBA-15 composite material. This material, which combines the mesoporous structure of SBA-15 and the strong red luminescence property of YVO4:Eu3+, can be used as a novel functional drug delivery system. The structure, morphology, porosity, and optical properties of the materials were well characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, N-2 adsorption, and photoluminescence spectra. As expected, the pore volume, surface area, and pore size of SBA-15 decrease in sequence after deposition of the YVO4:Eu3+ layer and the adsorption of ibuprofen (IBU, drug). The IBU-loaded YVO4:Eu3+@SBA-15 system still shows the red emission of Eu3+ (617 nm, D-5(0)-F-7(2)) under UV irradiation and the controlled drug release property. Additionally, the emission intensity of Eu3+ increases with an increase in the cumulative released amount of IBU in the system, making the extent of drug release easily identifiable, trackable, and monitorable by the change of luminescence. The system has great potential in the drug delivery and disease therapy fields.

Luminescence functionalization of ordered mesoporous MCM-41 silica was realized by depositing a YVO4:Eu3+ phosphor layer on its surface via the Pechini sol-gel process. This material, which combines the mesoporous structure of MCM-41 and the strong red luminescence property of YVO4: Eu3+, has been studied as a host carrier for drug delivery/release systems. The structure, morphology, texture and optical properties of the materials were well characterized by x-ray diffraction ( XRD), Fourier infrared spectroscopy ( FT-IR), transmission electron microscopy ( TEM), N-2 adsorption and photoluminescence ( PL) spectra. The results indicated that the specific surface area and pore volume of MCM-41, which were directly correlated to the drug-loading amount and ibuprofen ( IBU) release rate, decreased in sequence after deposition of YVO4:Eu3+ and loading of IBU as expected. The IBU-loaded YVO4:Eu3+@ MCM-41 system still showed red luminescence under UV irradiation ( 365 nm) and a controlled release property for IBU. In addition, the emission intensity of Eu3+ increases with an increase in the cumulative released amount of IBU, making the extent of drug release easily identified, tracked and monitored by the change of luminescence, which demonstrates its potential application in drug delivery/release systems.

Supercritical drying (SCD) and hydrophobic ambient pressure drying (APD) aerogels were prepared from hydrolysis of tetraethoxysilane in solutions of poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(propylene oxide)-poly(ethylene oxide) (P123) in the range of composition below the threshold for the ordered mesoporous silica precipitation. APD was carried out after silylation of wet gels with trimethylchlorosilane (TMCS) or hexamethyldisilazane (HMDZ). The samples were analyzed by small-angle X-ray scattering and nitrogen adsorption. Wet gels are formed by mass-fractal domains, with fractal dimension close to 2, and larger pores superposing the pores belonging to the fractal structure in case of high P123 concentrations. Aerogels exhibit smaller-sized mass-fractal domains with larger mass-fractal dimension accounting for some porosity elimination on drying. The pore volume of the aerogels increases significantly with the P123 amount and it is even larger in the APD aerogels than in the SCD aerogels. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
