The generalized temperature integral I(m, x) appears in non-isothermal kinetic analysis when the frequency factor depends on the temperature. A procedure based on Gaussian quadrature to obtain analytical approximations for the integral I(m, x) was proposed. The results showed good agreement between the obtained approximation values and those obtained by numerical integration. Unless other approximations found in literature, the methodology presented in this paper can be easily generalized in order to obtain approximations with the maximum of accurate.

The approach called generator coordinate Hartree-Fock (GCHF) method is used in the selection of Gaussian basis set [25s18p for O ((3)p), 31s21p14d for Mn (S-6), and 33s22p16d9f for Pr ((4)J)] for atoms. The role of the weight functions in the assessment of the numerical integration range of the GCHF equations is shown. These basis sets are contracted to (25s18p/9s5p), (31s21p14d/9s6p4d), and (33s22pl6d9f118sl2p5d3f) by segmented contraction scheme of Dunning and they are utilized in calculations of Restricted-Open-HF (ROHF) Total and Orbital energies of the (MnO+1)-Mn-3 and (PrO+1)-Pr-1 fragments, to evaluate their quality in molecular studies. The addition of one d polarization function in the contracted (9s5p) basis set for O(P-3) atom and their application with the contracted (9s6p4d), (18s21p5d3f) basis sets for Mn (S-6) and Pr-Pr ((4)j) atoms lead to the electronic structure study of PrMnO3. The dipole moment, the total energy, and total atomic charges properties were calculated and were carried out at ROHF level with the [PrMnO3](2) fragment. The calculated values show that PrMnO3 does not present piezoelectric properties. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The Generator Coordinate Hartree-Fock (GCHF) Method is applied to generate extended 14s 8p and 17s 11p Gaussian basis sets for the atoms O and Si, respectively. The role of the weight functions in the assessment of the numerical integration range of the GCHF is shown. The Gaussian basis sets are contracted to [6s4p] O atom and [8s5p] Si atom by the Dunning's segmented contraction scheme. To evaluate the quality of our contracted [6s4p] and [8s5p] bases in molecular calculations we accomplish calculations of total and orbital energies in the Hartree-Fock-Roothaan method for O-2 and SiO molecules. We compare the results obtained with the our (14s 8p) and (17s 11p) bases sets with the of 6-311G basis and with values from the literature. The addition of one d polarization function in the silicon basis and its utilization with the basis for oxygen leads to the calculation of electronic properties and IR Spectrum of high tridymite in space group D-3d. The Generator Coordinate Hartree-Fock (GCHF) method is applied to generate extended (20s14p), (30s19p13d), and (31s23p18d) Gaussian basis sets for the 0, Mn, and La atoms, respectively. The role of the weight functions (WFs) in the assessment of the numerical integration range of the GCHF equations is shown. These basis sets are then contracted to [5s3p] and [11s6p6d] for 0 and Mn atoms, respectively, and [17s11p7d] for La atom by a standard procedure. For quality evaluation of contracted basis sets in molecular calculations, we have accomplished calculations of total and orbital energies in the Hartree-Fock-Roothaan (HFR) method for (MnO1+)-Mn-5 and (LaO1+)-La-1 fragments. The results obtained with the contracted basis sets are compared with values obtained with the extended basis sets. The addition of one d polarization function in the contracted basis set for 0 atom and its utilization with the contracted basis sets for Mn and La atoms leads to the calculations of dipole moment and total atomic charges of perovskite (LaMnO3). The calculations were performed at the HFR level with the crystal [LaMnO3](2) fragment in space group C-2v the values of dipole moment, total energy, and total atomic charges showed that it is reasonable to believe that LaMnO3 presents behaviour of piezoelectric material. Products from the spontaneous reaction of a long-chain arenediazonium salt, 2,6-dimethyl-4-hexadecylbenzenediazonium tetrafluoroborate(16-ArN2BF4), in aqueous micellar solutions of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)? are used to estimate the local concentration of chloride and bromide ions at the micellar surface. The arenediazonium ion, 16-ArN2+, which is totally bound to the SDS micelle, reacts by rate-determining loss of N-2 to give an aryl cation that traps available nucleophiles, i,e., H2O, Cl-, and Br-, to give stable phenol, 16-ArOH, and halobenzene products, 16-ArCl and 16-ArBr, respectively. Product yields, determined by HPLC, are related to local concentrations using calibration curves obtained from independent standards. The local concentrations determined by this method are consistent with co-ion concentrations calculated, using a cell model, by numerical integration of the Poisson-Boltzmann equation (PBE) taking into account salt-induced micellar growth. The salt dependence of the intel facial concentrations of Cl- and Br- are identical. indicating no specific interactions in the interfacial co-ion compartment. PBE calculations predict that, in micellar SDS, increasing the concentration of a particular halide salt (NaX) at constant concentration of another halide (NaY) should result in an increase in the local concentrations of both co-ions. Using this chemical-trapping method, this prediction was demonstrated experimentally.

A simple generalization of Wisdom's perturbative method, as originally proposed by Wisdom (1985), is obtained. Any number of resonant cosines can be handled and the method can also accommodate more involved disturbing functions. Averaged trajectories are easily obtained by drawing level curves of the action. Here, the method is first tested for simple models of 3:1 and 2:1 resonant problems. Comparisons with numerical integration and surface-section curves show very good agreements.

In this work, a numerical model to perform non-linear analysis of building floor structures is proposed. The presented model is derived from the Kirchhoff-s plate bending formulation of the boundary element method (BENI) for zoned domains, in which the plate stiffness is modified by the presence of membrane effects. In this model, no approximation of the generalized forces along the interface is required and the compatibility and equilibrium conditions along interfaces are imposed at the integral equation level. In order to reduce the number of degrees of freedom, the Navier Bernoulli hypothesis is assumed to simplify the strain field for the thin sub-regions (rectangular beams). The non-linear formulation is obtained from the linear formulation by incorporating initial internal force fields, which are approximated by using the well-known cell sub-division. Then, the non-linear solution of algebraic equations is obtained by using the concept of the consistent tangent operator. The Von Mises criterion is adopted to govern the elasto-plastic material behaviour checked at points along the plate thickness and along the rectangular beam element axes. The numerical representations are accurately obtained by either computing analytically the element integrals or performing the numerical integration accurately using an appropriate sub-elementation scheme. The aim of this work is to present a formulation of the boundary element method to analyse elastic and isotropic plates with curved boundaries. In this study the plate boundary is approximated, along each element, by a second degree polynomial relation or by a circular arch, in order to better represent the real boundary. The numerical integration is performed by the self-adaptive coordinate transformation proposed by Telles. The effective shear forces are approximated by concentrated reactions applied at the boundary element nodes, according to the alternative formulation introduced by Paiva. Some examples are presented to demonstrate the better accuracy obtained with the proposed elements.

A semi-analytical approach is proposed to study the rotational motion of an artificial satellite under the influence of the torque due to the solar radiation pressure and taking into account the influence of Earth's shadow. The Earth's shadow is introduced in the equations for the rotational motion as a function depending on the longitude of the Sun, on the ecliptic's obliquity and on the orbital parameters of the satellite. By mapping and computing this function, we can get the periods in which the satellite is not illuminated and the torque due to the solar radiation pressure is zero. When the satellite is illuminated, a known analytical solution is used to predict the satellite's attitude. This analytical solution is expressed in terms of Andoyer's variables and depends on the physical and geometrical properties of the satellite and on the direction of the Sun radiation flux. By simulating a hypothetical circular cylindrical type satellite, an example is exhibited and the results agree quite well when compared with a numerical integration. © 1997 COSPAR. This paper presents the theoretical and experimental results for oxide thin film growth on titanium films previously deposited over glass substrate. Ti films of thickness 0.1 μm were heated by Nd:YAG laser pulses in air. The oxide tracks were created by moving the samples with a constant speed of 2 mm/s, under the laser action. The micro-topographic analysis of the tracks was performed by a microprofiler. The results taken along a straight line perpendicular to the track axis revealed a Gaussian profile that closely matches the laser's spatial mode profile, indicating the effectiveness of the surface temperature gradient on the film's growth process. The sample's micro-Raman spectra showed two strong bands at 447 and 612 cm -1 associated with the TiO 2 structure. This is a strong indication that thermo-oxidation reactions took place at the Ti film surface that reached an estimated temperature of 1160 K just due to the action of the first pulse. The results obtained from the numerical integration of the analytical equation which describes the oxidation rate (Wagner equation) are in agreement with the experimental data for film thickness in the high laser intensity region. This shows the partial accuracy of the one-dimensional model adopted for describing the film growth rate. © 2001 Elsevier Science B.V.

We suggest a method for constructing trial eigenfunctions for excited states to be used in the variational method. This method is a generalization of the one that uses a superpotential to obtain the trial functions for the ground state. The construction of an effective hierarchy of Hamiltonians is used to determine excited variational energies. The first four eigenvalues for a quartic double-well potential are calculated for several values of the potential parameter. The results are in very good agreement with the eigenvalues obtained by numerical integration.

The problem of escape/capture is encountered in many problems of the celestial mechanics -the capture of the giants planets irregular satellites, comets capture by Jupiter, and also orbital transfer between two celestial bodies as Earth and Moon. To study these problems we introduce an approach which is based on the numerical integration of a grid of initial conditions. The two-body energy of the particle relative to a celestial body defines the escape/capture. The trajectories are integrated into the past from initial conditions with negative two-body energy. The energy change from negative to positive is considered as an escape. By reversing the time, this escape turns into a capture. Using this technique we can understand many characteristics of the problem, as the maximum capture time, stable regions where the particles cannot escape from, and others. The advantage of this kind of approach is that it can be used out of plane (that is, for any inclination), and with perturbations in the dynamics of the n-body problem. © 2005 International Astronomical Union.

Once defined the relationship between the Starter Motor components and their functions, it is possible to develop a mathematical model capable to predict the Starter behavior during operation. One important aspect is the engagement system behavior. The development of a mathematical tool capable of predicting it is a valuable step in order to reduce the design time, cost and engineering efforts. A mathematical model, represented by differential equations, can be developed using physics laws, evaluating force balance and energy flow through the systems degrees of freedom. Another important physical aspect to be considered in this modeling is the impact conditions (particularly on the pinion and ring-gear contact). This work is a report of those equations application on available mathematical software and the resolution of those equations by Runge-Kutta's numerical integration method, in order to build an accessible engineering tool.
