The mitotic chromosomes, nucleolus organizer regions (NORs), C-banding pattern and nuclear DNA content of Mastacembelus armatus were studied. The karyotype (2n = 48; 10m + 6sm + 4st + 28a) was characterized by the presence of one chromosome pair with NORs and a small quantity of heterochromatin. The DNA content observed in erythrocyte nuclei of M. armatus was 1.39 +/- 0.08 pg. Comparison of this karyotype with those of other Synbranchiformes revealed a strong similarity, suggesting that small chromosome rearrangements may have been maintained during its evolutionary history.

The Hoplias malabaricus primary spermatogonium shows a large nucleus, central nucleolus, and low electron-dense cytoplasm containing nuages. In cysts, they undergo several mitotic divisions with incomplete cytokinesis, giving rise to secondary spermatogonia. These are smaller than the primary spermatogonia and their nuclei have one or two eccentric nucleoli. Spermatocytes I can be identified by the presence of synaptonemal complexes. Spermatocytes II are smaller than spermatocytes 1, displaying roughly compacted chromatin. All these cell types remain interconnected by thick-walled intercellular bridges, which have membranous reinforcements during mitosis and meiosis. These cell types show a well-developed endomembranous system, one of the centrioles anchored to the plasma membrane and small nuages. Their mitochondria are large and circular, with few cristae. In the last generations of spermatogonia, the mitochondria are smaller, elongate and have more cristae. In the spermatocytes, the mitochondria are small and round. Similarities found in relation to germ cells of other teleosts are discussed.

The ultrastructure of Sorubim lima spermatogenesis during the premeiotic and meiotic periods was studied. Our observations showed that the germ cells in the cysts are connected by cytoplasmic bridges and the mitotic and meiotic divisions are slightly asynchronous, the first and the last spermatogonial generations differ in the cellular and nuclear volume, nucleolus, chromatin condensation, distribution, size, density, and shape of the mitochondria, presence of 'lamellae anulata', amount and dimension of the 'nuages', and movement of the centrioles. In addition to the nuclear prophase structures, the spermatocyte I shows changes in all other cellular organelles and elongated vesicles appear in the cytoplasm. The accentuated cytoplasmic density and thickened walled vesicles are morphological characteristics that differentiate spermatocytes II from the other germ cells in the cysts of Sorubim lima testis. The Neotropical freshwater fish fauna is very rich-according to the most recent catalogue 71 families and 4,475 species have been described. However, only a small amount of general information is available on the composition of Neotropical marine fishes. In Brazil, 1,298 marine species have been recorded. General analysis of available cytogenetic and population genetic data clearly indicates research has been mainly concentrated on freshwater fishes. Thus, today, cytogenetic information is available for 475 species of Characiformes, 318 species of Siluriformes, 48 species of Gymnotiformes, 199 freshwater species that do not belong to the superorder Ostariophysi, and only 109 species of marine fishes. For the species studied, only about 6% have sex chromosomes and about 5% have supernumerary or B chromosomes. A review of the cytogenetic studies shows that these data have provided valuable information about the relationships between fish groups, the occurrence of cryptic species and species complexes, the mechanism of sex determination and sex chromosome evolution, the distribution of nucleolus organizer regions, the existence supernumerary chromosomes, and the relationship between polyploidy and evolution. In relation to populations in Neotropical marine waters, the studies have shown the presence of cryptic species, which has important implications for fishery management. Different levels of genetic structuring can be found among Neotropical freshwater migratory fish species. This raises important implications for fish population genetic diversity and consequently its sustainable utilization in inland fisheries and aquaculture, specifically for conservation of ichthyo-diversity and survival.
