The nature of the pre-morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) cubic-like state in the lead-free piezoelectric ceramics (1-x)Na1/2Bi1/2TiO3-(x)BaTiO3 at x similar to 0.06 has been examined in detail by electric field and temperature dependent neutron diffraction, x-ray diffraction, dielectric and ferroelectric characterization. The superlattice reflections in the neutron diffraction patterns cannot be explained with the tetragonal P4bm and the rhombohedral (R3c) phase coexistence model. The cubic like state is rather a result of long ranged modulated complex octahedral tilt. This modulated structure exhibits anomalously large dielectric dispersion. The modulated structure transforms to a MPB state on poling. The field-stabilized MPB state is destroyed and the modulated structure is restored on heating the poled specimen above the Vogel-Fulcher freezing temperature. The results show the predominant role of competing octahedral tilts in determining the nature of structural and polar states in Na1/2Bi1/2TiO3-based ferroelectrics. (C) 2013 AIP Publishing LLC.

Antisite disorder is observed to have significant impact on the magnetic properties of the double perovskite Y2CoMnO6 which has been recently identified as a multiferroic. A paramagnetic-ferromagnetic phase transition occurs in this material at T-c approximate to 75 K. At 2K, it displays a strong ferromagnetic hysteresis with a significant coercive field of H-c approximate to 15 kOe. Sharp steps are observed in the hysteresis curves recorded below 8K. In the temperature range 2K <= T <= 5K, the hysteresis loops are anomalous as the virgin curve lies outside the main loop. The field-cooling conditions as well as the rate of field-sweep are found to influence the steps. Quantitative analysis of the neutron diffraction data shows that at room temperature, Y2CoMnO6 consists of 62% of monoclinic P2(1)/n with nearly 70% antisite disorder and 38% Pnma. The bond valence sums indicate the presence of other valence states for Co and Mn which arise from disorder. We explain the origin of steps by using a model for pinning of magnetization at the antiphase boundaries created by antisite disorder. The steps in magnetization closely resemble the martensitic transformations found in intermetallics and display first-order characteristics as revealed in the Arrott's plots. Unusual behavior of reentrant spin-glass (RSG) compound Lu2MnNiO6 has been investigated by magnetometry and neutron diffraction. The system possesses a ferromagnetic (FM) ordering below 40 K and undergoes a RSG transition at 20 K. Additionally, Lu2MnNiO6 retains memory effect above the glassy transition till spins sustain ordering. A novel critical behavior with unusual critical exponents (beta =similar to 0.241 and gamma similar to 1.142) is observed that indicates a canting in the spin structure below the ferromagnetic transition (T-C). A comprehensive analysis of temperature-dependent neutron diffraction data and first-principles calculations divulge that a structural distortion induced by an octahedral tilting results in a canted spin structure below T-C.

The highly complex structure-property interrelationship in the lead-free piezoelectric (x) Na1/2Bi1/2TiO3 - (1 - x) BaTiO3 is a subject of considerable contemporary debate. Using comprehensive x-ray, neutron diffraction, dielectric, and ferroelectric studies, we have shown the existence of a new criticality in this system at x = 0.80, i.e., well within the conventional tetragonal phase field. This criticality manifests as a nonmonotonic variation of the tetragonality and coercivity and is shown to be associated with a crossover from a nonmodulated tetragonal phase (for x < 0.8) to a long-period modulated tetragonal phase (for x > 0.80). It is shown that the stabilization of long-period modulation introduces a characteristic depolarization temperature in the system. While differing qualitatively from the two-phase model often suggested for the critical compositions of this system, our results support the view with regard to the tendency in perovskites to stabilize long-period modulated structures as a result of complex interplay of antiferrodistortive modes Bellaiche and Iniguez, Phys. We report the origin of room temperature (RT) ferromagnetic and ferroelectric properties of Pb(Fe1/2Nb1/2)O-3 (PFN) ceramic sample prepared by modified solid-state reaction synthesis by a single-step method, based on X-ray diffraction (XRD), neutron diffraction (ND), Mossbauer spectroscopy and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy results. Formation of single-phase monoclinic PFN ceramic with Cm space group was confirmed by XRD and ND at RT. The morphology studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) confirmed uniform microstructure of the sample with average grain size of similar to 2 mu m. The ND, Mossbauer spectroscopy, M-H loop and EPR studies were carried out to confirm the existence of weak ferromagnetism at RT. A clear opening of hysteresis (M-H) loop is evidenced as the existence of weak ferromagnetism at RT. EPR spectrum clearly shows the ferromagnetism through a good resonance signal. The symmetric EPR line shape with g = 1.9895 observed in PFN sample was identified to be due to Fe3+ ions. Mossbauer spectroscopy at RT shows superparamagnetic behaviour with presence of Fe in 3+ valence state. Ferroelectric P-E loops on PFN at RT confirm the existing ferroelectric ordering. Our observation is in agreement with literature, and it supports that the origin of ferromagnetism and ferroelectricity is isolated, i.e. from different regions in the sample. Our results do not support the multiferroic nature of PFN at RT.

We report the origin of room temperature weak ferromagnetic behavior of polycrystalline Pb(Fe2/3W1/3)O-3 (PFW) powder. The structure and magnetic properties of the ceramic powder prepared by a Columbite method were characterized by X-ray and neutron diffraction, Mossbauer spectroscopy and magnetization measurements. Rietveld analysis of diffraction data confirm the formation of single phase PFW, without traces of any parasitic pyrochlore phase. PFW was found to crystallize in the cubic structure at room temperature. The Rietveld refinement of neutron diffraction data measured at room temperature confirmed the G-type antiferromagnetic structure of PFW in our sample. However, along with the antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering of the Fe spins, we have observed the existence of weak ferromagnetism at room temperature through: (i) a clear opening of hysteresis (M-H) loop, (ii) bifurcation of the field cooled and zero-field cooled susceptibility; supported by Mossbauer spectroscopy results. The P-E loop measurements showed a non-linear slim hysteresis loop at room temperature due to the electronic conduction through the local inhomogeneities in the PFW crystallites and the inter-particle regions. By corroborating all the magnetic measurements, especially the spin glass nature of the sample, with the conduction behavior of the sample, we report here that the observed ferromagnetism originates at these local inhomogeneous regions in the sample, where the Fe-spins are not perfectly aligned antiferromagnetically due to the compositional disordering. Human transthyretin (hTTR) is a multifunctional protein that is involved in several neurodegenerative diseases. Besides the transportation of thyroxin and vitamin A, it is also involved in the proteolysis of apolipoprotein A1 and A beta peptide. Extensive analyses of 32 high-resolution X-ray and neutron diffraction structures of hTTR followed by molecular-dynamics simulation studies using a set of 15 selected structures affirmed the presence of 44 conserved water molecules in its dimeric structure. They are found to play several important roles in the structure and function of the protein. Eight water molecules stabilize the dimeric structure through an extensive hydrogen-bonding network. The absence of some of these water molecules in highly acidic conditions (pH <= 4.0) severely affects the interfacial hydrogen-bond network, which may destabilize the native tetrameric structure, leading to its dissociation. Three pairs of conserved water molecules contribute to maintaining the geometry of the ligand-binding cavities. Some other water molecules control the orientation and dynamics of different structural elements of hTTR. This systematic study of the location, absence, networking and interactions of the conserved water molecules may shed some light on various structural and functional aspects of the protein. The present study may also provide some rational clues about the conserved water-mediated architecture and stability of hTTR.

The complexity associated with local structures continues to pose challenges with regard to the understanding of the structure-property relationship in Na1/2Bi1/2TiO3-based lead-free piezoceramics. (1-x)Na1/2Bi1/2TiO3-(x)BaTiO3 is an extensively studied system because of its interesting piezoelectric properties. Recently, a room temperature phase boundary was reported at x = 0.03 in this system Ma et al., Adv. Funct. Mater. 23, 5261 (2013)]. In the present work we have examined this subtle phase boundary using x-ray diffraction, neutron diffraction, dielectric measurements as a function of composition (x < 0.06), temperature, and electric field. Our results show that this boundary separates an R3c + Cc-like structural state for x < 0.03 from an R3c+ cubiclike structural state for 0.03 <= x <= 0.05 in the unpoled specimens. This phase boundary is characterized by an anomalous reduction in the depolarization temperature, and a suppression of the tetragonal distortion of the high temperature P4bm phase. Our results also provide the clue to understand the pathway leading to the cubiclike structure of the critical composition x = 0.06, known for its highest piezoelectric response.

The cyclic deformation behavior Of ultrafine-grained (UFG) Ni samples synthesized by the electrodeposition method was studied. Different from those made by severely plastic deformation, the UFG samples used in this study are characterized by large-angle grain boundaries. Behaviors from nanocrystalline Ni and coarse-grained Ni samples were compared with that Of Ultrafine-grained Ni. With in situ neutron diffraction. unusual evolutions of residual lattice strains as well as cyclic hardening and softening behavior were demonstrated during the cyclic deformation. The microstructural changes investigated by TEM are discussed with respect to the unusual lattice strain and cyclic hardening/softening. (C) 2008 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. The E‒H bond activation chemistry of tris-phosophino-iron and -cobalt metallaboratranes is discussed. The ferraboratrane complex (TPB)Fe(N2) heterolytically activates H‒H and the C‒H bonds of formaldehyde and arylacetylenes across an Fe‒B bond. In particular, H‒H bond cleavage at (TPB)Fe(N2) is reversible and affords the iron-hydride-borohydride complex (TPB)(μ‒H)Fe(L)(H) (L = H2, N2). (TPB)(μ‒H)Fe(L)(H) and (TPB)Fe(N2) are competent olefin and arylacetylene hydrogenation catalysts. Stoichiometric studies indicate that the B‒H unit is capable of acting as a hydride shuttle in the hydrogenation of olefin and arylacetylene substrates. The heterolytic cleavage of H2 by the (TPB)Fe system is distinct from the previously reported (TPB)Co(H2) complex, where H2 coordinates as a non-classical H2 adduct based on X-ray, spectroscopic, and reactivity data. The non-classical H2 ligand in (TPB)Co(H2) is confirmed in this work by single crystal neutron diffraction, which unequivocally shows an intact H‒H bond of 0.83 Å in the solid state. The neutron structure also shows that the H2 ligand is localized at two orientations on cobalt trans to the boron. This localization in the solid state contrasts with the results from ENDOR spectroscopy that show that the H2 ligand freely rotates about the Co‒H2 axis in frozen solution. Finally, the (TPB)Fe system, as well as related tris-phosphino-iron complexes that contain a different apical ligand unit (Si, PhB, C, and N) in place of the boron in (TPB)Fe, were studied for CO2 hydrogenation chemistry. The (TPB)Fe system is not catalytically competent, while the silicon, borate, carbon variants, (SiPR3)Fe, (PhBPiPr3)Fe, and (CPiPr3)Fe, respectively, are catalysts for the hydrogenation of CO2 to formate and methylformate. The hydricity of the CO2 reactive species in the silatrane system (SiPiPr3)Fe(N2)(H) has been experimentally estimated.

The microscopic properties of a two-dimensional model dense fluid of Lennard-Jones disks have been studied using the so-called "molecular dynamics" method. Analyses of the computer-generated simulation data in terms of "conventional" thermodynamic and distribution functions verify the physical validity of the model and the simulation technique.
The radial distribution functions g(r) computed from the simulation data exhibit several subsidiary features rather similar to those appearing in some of the g(r) functions obtained by X-ray and thermal neutron diffraction measurements on real simple liquids. In the case of the model fluid, these "anomalous" features are thought to reflect the existence of two or more alternative configurations for local ordering.
Graphical display techniques have been used extensively to provide some intuitive insight into the various microscopic phenomena occurring in the model. For example, "snapshots" of the instantaneous system configurations for different times show that the "excess" area allotted to the fluid is collected into relatively large, irregular, and surprisingly persistent "holes". Plots of the particle trajectories over intervals of 2.0 to 6.0 x 10-12 sec indicate that the mechanism for diffusion in the dense model fluid is "cooperative" in nature, and that extensive diffusive migration is generally restricted to groups of particles in the vicinity of a hole.
A quantitative analysis of diffusion in the model fluid shows that the cooperative mechanism is not inconsistent with the statistical predictions of existing theories of singlet, or self-diffusion in liquids. The relative diffusion of proximate particles is, however, found to be retarded by short-range dynamic correlations associated with the cooperative mechanism--a result of some importance from the standpoint of bimolecular reaction kinetics in solution.
A new, semi-empirical treatment for relative diffusion in liquids is developed, and is shown to reproduce the relative diffusion phenomena observed in the model fluid quite accurately. When incorporated into the standard Smoluchowski theory of diffusion-controlled reaction kinetics, the more exact treatment of relative diffusion is found to lower the predicted rate of reaction appreciably.
Finally, an entirely new approach to an understanding of the liquid state is suggested. Our experience in dealing with the simulation data--and especially, graphical displays of the simulation data--has led us to conclude that many of the more frustrating scientific problems involving the liquid state would be simplified considerably, were it possible to describe the microscopic structures characteristic of liquids in a concise and precise manner. To this end, we propose that the development of a formal language of partially-ordered structures be investigated.

This paper uses finite element (FE) analysis to examine the residual stresses generated during the TIG welding of aluminium aerospace alloys. It also looks at whether such an approach could be useful for evaluating the effectiveness of various residual stress control techniques. However, such simulations cannot be founded in a vacuum. They require accurate measurements to refine and validate them. The unique aspect of this work is that two powerful engineering techniques are combined: FE modelling and neutron diffraction. Weld trials were performed and the direct measurement of residual strain made using the ENGIN neutron diffraction strain scanning facility. The predicted results show an excellent agreement with experimental values. Finally this model is used to simulate a weld made using a "Low Stress No Distortion" (LSND) technique. Although the stress reduction predicted is only moderate, the study suggests the approach to be a quick and efficient means of optimising such techniques.
