The questions that guide this article deal with the nation-State configuration and civil society organization, as well as the contours of the relation between both in the globalization context. As a qualitative change of internationalization, globalization brings to the social sciences field the discussion about its social impacts and the problematization about extinction of State. Thus, the article is guided by the debate between determined authors that deal with the analysis about new strategies of the State action, in order to understand where national States go, seeking to adapt themselves to the new context of Capital globalization.

From a reading of the novel Brazil-Maru by Karen Tei Yamashita, this article focuses mainly on discussing about Japanese colonies’formation in Brazil, as well as the reasons that stimulated Japanese immigrants to invest their efforts in the process of this new undertaking. Some peculiarities between nucleous in the countryside of the state of São Paulo and Esperança’s community formation of this novel will be discussed and compared in the present work. The theoretical supports about the concept of Nation by Ernest Renan and the concept of Imagined Communities by Benedict Anderson compose the theoretical basis for understanding the constitution of Japanese diasporic nation in Brazil.

Nelson Mandela has been an example of fighting and going over the adversities since his prison in 1962 until his election to be the president of South Africa in 1994. His effort against the apartheid in South Africa might be compared to a classical hero according to the anthropological view of Eliade (1972), Campbell (1991; 2007) and Propp’s structuralist perspective (1984). His journey toward heroism and his strategies to get the adhesion of the white minority (Afrikaners) to his purposes of joining the races in South Africa will be analyzed in this article with the theoretical support of the Greimasian semiotics, Propp’s studies (1984) and anthropology. The movie Invictus will be the object of analysis as it shows the moment of Mandela’s social-political fight as the president, with the support of the local rugby team in order to have the racial integration in the country and the political support of the white minority.

Decadal and longer timescale variability in the winter North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) has considerable impact on regional climate, yet it remains unclear what fraction of this variability is potentially predictable. This study takes a new approach to this question by demonstrating clear physical differences between NAO variability on interannual-decadal (<30 year) and multidecadal (>30 year) timescales. It is shown that on the shorter timescale the NAO is dominated by variations in the latitude of the North Atlantic jet and storm track, whereas on the longer timescale it represents changes in their strength instead. NAO variability on the two timescales is associated with different dynamical behaviour in terms of eddy-mean flow interaction, Rossby wave breaking and blocking. The two timescales also exhibit different regional impacts on temperature and precipitation and different relationships to sea surface temperatures. These results are derived from linear regression analysis of the Twentieth Century and NCEP-NCAR reanalyses and of a high-resolution HiGEM General Circulation Model control simulation, with additional analysis of a long sea level pressure reconstruction. Evidence is presented for an influence of the ocean circulation on the longer timescale variability of the NAO, which is particularly clear in the model data. As well as providing new evidence of potential predictability, these findings are shown to have implications for the reconstruction and interpretation of long climate records.
