Data are presented on concentrations of aliphatic and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (AHC and PAH) in interstitial waters and bottom sediments of the Kara Sea compared to distribution of particulate matter and organic carbon. It was found that AHC concentrations within the water mass (aver. 16 µg/l) are mainly formed by natural processes. Distribution of AHC represents variability of hydrological and sedimentation processes in different regions of the sea. The widest ranges of the concentrations occurred in the Obskaya Guba - Kara Sea section: in water (10-310 µg/l for AHC and 0.4-7.2 ng/l for PAH) and in the surface layer of the bottom sediments (8-42 µg/l for AHC and 9-94 ng/g for PAH). Differentiation of hydrocarbons (HC) in different media follows regularities typical for marginal filters; therefore no oil and pyrogenic compounds are supplied to the open sea. In sediments contents of HC depend on variations in redox conditions in sediments and on their composition.

Oceanographic data collected by ocean research organisations in Russia, the USA, the United Kingdom, Germany, Norway, and Poland for the Barents, Kara and White Seas region are presented in this atlas. Recently declassified naval data from Norway, the USA, and the UK are also included. More than 1,000,000 oceanographic stations containing temperature and/or sea-water salinity data were originally selected. After correcting errors and eliminating duplicates, data from 206,300 checked stations were placed on CD-ROM, together with many figures describing the characteristics of both the single-input and combined data set. In addition, temperature and salinity measurements were interpolated to the following standard horizons: 0, 25, 50, 100, 150, 200, 250, 300 m, and bottom. This atlas covers the 100-year period 1898 to 1998 and is, to date, the most complete oceanographic data collection for these Arctic shelf seas. This data set is complemented by more than 9,000 measurements of sea surface temperature, which were recently digitized from ships' logbooks. They cover the same geographical area within the time period 1867-1912.

During Cruise 54 of R/V Akademik Mstislav Keldysh macrobenthos of the Novaya Zemlya Trough was studied with use of a Sigsby trawl along a submeridional transect near 75°30'N at depth range from 68 to 362 m. In total 140 species of bottom animals were found. Relative role of taxons was assessed using three parameters: abundance, biomass, and energy flow. Similarity of the parameters was used for comparison of samples. New material greatly contributes to data on composition of fauna and structure of communities of the studied region. It was revealed that small scyphozoid polyps and sipunculoids play an important role in the trough's community. Presence of a community dominated by Ophiocten sericeum (with important role of small bivalves) was revealed for the first time not only at the eastern by also at the western slope of the Novaya Zemlya Trough. The sharpest changes in composition and structure of the bottom community were confined to a zone of transition from the trough floor to the slope. These changes are determined by specificity of the macrorelief (of the floor and slope), composition of ground (soft brown silts abound in rhizopods and dense gray silts with admixture of pebbles), and possibly by hydrodynamic processes near the bottom.
