The present study aimed to analyze the floristic and structural descriptors of tree species natural regeneration in a forest sector with synchronized bamboo (Merostachys multiramea Hackel) die-off (CT) and an adjacent area with continuous canopy cover (ST) in an araucaria forest fragment in the municipality of Lages, Santa Catarina state. A total of 14, 5x5m, plots (six plots in CT sector and eight in ST sector) were allocated, where all tree species regenerative individual with circumference at breast height smaller than 15cm and height higher than 25cm was measured (diameter at soil level) and identified. The richest families were: Myrtaceae (nine), Solanaceae (six) and Aquifoliaceae (four). The Shannon Diversity Index in ST and CT sectors were respectively 2.73 and 2.31. The species with the highest importance values in CT sector were Solanum variabile, Piptocarpha angustifolia, Mimosa scabrella, Jacaranda puberula and Solanum pseudoquina. In ST sector, the species with highest importance values were Myrsine lorentziana, Casearia decandra, Cinnamodendron dinisii, Drimys brasiliensis and Ilex paraguariensis. The results showed that the synchronized bamboo die-off influenced the spatial variation in the floristic and structural descriptors of the tree species natural regeneration.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the possibility to obtaining guided bone regeneration utilizing a nonporous PTFE barrier in the osseointegrated implants, protruding from the bone level of the rabbit tíbia. The histologic characteristics of the interface between titanium implants, one group titanium-plasma coated, another group with acid-treated surfaces and the regenerated bone were also studied Twenty Screw-Vent implants were placed in tibias of five rabbits, two at the right side and two at the left side, protruding 3 mm from the bone level, to create a horizontal bone defect. ln the experimental side, the implants and adjacent bone were protected with a nonporous PTFE barrier. Histologic analysis after three months showed that all implants were in direct contact with the bane. Histologic measurements showed an average gain in bone height of the 2.15 and 2.42 mm for the barrier group and 1.95 and 0.43 mm for the control defects, in the titanium plasma-spray and acid-treated implant surfaces, respectively. The results suggest that the placement of implants protruding 3 mm from crestal bone defects may result in vertical bone augmentation and the regenerated bone is able to osseointegrate implants. lt seems to be critical the use of the PTFE barrier when acid-treated surface implants are inserted

The extraocular muscle fibres of the South-American opossum were determined according to their metabolic profiles using NADH-diaforase, and myofibrilar ATPase after pre-incubation in both acid (pH 4.3) and alkaline (pH 10.4) media. Three muscles were selected to study the arrangement of the fibres (obliquous dorsalis, rectus dorsalis and rectus lateralis muscles). It was demonstrated that they are organized in two layers: the orbital layer composed by small diameter fibres and the global layer with three-times thicker fibres than the former. The global layer has three fibre types: white, red and intermediate; while the orbital layer presents two fibre types, which react differently to the ATPase.

Background: The principles of tissue regeneration to repair alveolar bone defects are based on the fabrication of a biologic barrier with different biomaterials. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the guided bone regeneration (GBR) by using membrane of demineralized bovine bone matrix (DBBM) on experimental defects in tibia of dogs. Methods: Four dogs were used and after anesthesia, shaving and antisepsis, two standardized bone defects were created on the right tibia of each animal with trephine drill. In the Control Group, the defects were filled with blood coagulum, while in the Treated Group, a membrane of DBBM was used to cover the defects. After 90 days, animals were sacrificed. Results: In the Treated Group, 67.4% of new bone formation was observed and, in the Control Group, 32.6% of the bone tissue reabsorbed when compared with initial bone volume. The membrane remained intact and no inflammatory tissue was observed on membrane/ bone interface. Conclusion: It was concluded that the use of DBBM is an osteoconductive material, presents biocompatibility and may be promise option to repair bone defects.

Objective: The use of methods for tissue regeneration has been widely applied in Implantology, in clinical situations with disabilities or anatomical limitations that prevent the placement of osseointegrated dental implants. The evolution of the development of biomaterials revolutionized this therapeutic modality, facilitating the resolution of clinical cases with tissue deficiencies. Thus, this study aimed to describe a clinical case approaching the methods, techniques, and materials used in guided bone regeneration applied to Implantology. Case report: A clinical case of a patient who received a Morse taper dental implant (region 15) is described. The use of biomaterial and membrane on the buccal wall of the socket was required. After the osseointegration period, a reopening surgery was performed, and an immediate provisional implant was produced. After 2 months of follow-up, the final prosthesis was made involving other adjacent elements. Final considerations: The guided bone regeneration technique employed showed satisfactory performance. The patient was positive regarding esthetics and function. However, more controlled studies with longer follow-up period are needed for analyses of predictability

OBJETIVO: Avaliar a ação precoce do laser terapêutico e do ultrassom no processo de regeneração de uma lesão experimental em ratos. MÉTODO: Utilizou-se 24 ratos. Dezoito foram submetidos ao procedimento cirúrgico de lesão do nervo ciático por compressão, através de uma pinça hemostática acima da fossa poplítea. Os animais foram divididos em três grupos com seis animais em cada. Grupo controle normal. GI: controle lesado sem intervenção terapêutica. GII: intervenção terapêutica do laser ArGaAl. GIII: intervenção terapêutica do ultrassom Pulsado. Iniciamos as intervenções terapêuticas 24 horas após a lesão, com aplicações diárias, por um período de quatorze dias consecutivos. RESULTADOS: Ao avaliar a perimetria dos músculos da coxa direita obteve-se os seguintes valores médios de diminuição (mm), para cada grupo GI: 0,45; GII: 0,42; GIII: 0,40. Quanto ao tempo de deslocamento tanto o GII e GIII apresentaram diferença significativa, quando comparados ao GI. Na avaliação final do IFC o GII sobressaiu ao GIII. Quanto a cicatrização observou-se grande melhora no GII e GIII. CONCLUSÃO: Os resultados evidenciaram que a recuperação nervosa foi maior com a aplicação do laser. O estudo buscou avaliar diferenças florísticas e estruturais entre os componentes adulto e regenerante de trecho de Floresta Ombrófila Mista em Campos do Jordão, a fim de levantar hipóteses sobre sua trajetória sucessional. Para amostragem do componente adulto (CAP > 15 cm) foram instaladas 50 parcelas permanentes de 10 × 20 m e, em cada uma dessas, cinco subparcelas de 1 × 1 m para amostragem do componente regenerante (h > 30 cm e CAP < 15 cm). No componente adulto foram amostrados 1.770 indivíduos, distribuídos em 58 espécies, 38 gêneros e 26 famílias (H' = 3,08 e J = 0,73). Já entre os regenerantes foram observados 576 indivíduos, 55 espécies, 39 gêneros e 23 famílias (H' = 3,41 e J = 0,84). Constatou-se que são necessárias ações de manejo para a conservação in situ das coníferas locais.
