The role of morality and sin in therapy is a controversial topic. However, therapy has a distinctly moral nature, and the Christian concept of sin provides a helpful framework within which the therapist can effectively respond to clients' feeling guilt for their wrong doing as they present in therapy. This paper discusses how the moral nature of therapy must be understood and embraced if it is to encourage both insight and increased self-efficacy in treatment. The Christian concept of sin is discussed as well as a psychological definition of sin and its effects. A potential treatment approach is presented which emphasizes responsibility and restoration through insight, compassion, and increased self-efficacy. This approach is then displayed through a case example.

Three usually unexpressed, and too often unnoticed, conceptual dichotomies underlie our perception and understanding of lawyers’ ethics. First, the existence of a special body of professional ethics and professional regulation presupposes some special need or risk. Criminal and civil law are apparently insufficient. Ordinary day-to-day morality and ordinary ethics, likewise, are not considered to be enough. What is the risk entailed by the notion of a profession that is special; who needs protection, and from what? Two quite different possible answers to this question provide the first of the three dichotomies examined in this article: one can understand the risk as primarily to a vulnerable client from a powerful professional; or, to the contrary, from a powerful client-lawyer combination toward vulnerable others. Second, what is the foundational orientation of lawyers? Are lawyers serving primarily their particular clients, and those clients’ preferences, choices and autonomy? Or is the primary allegiance of lawyers to some community or collective goal or interest distinct from the particular goals or interests of the client? The third dichotomy concerns not the substance of the risk, or the primary orientation, but the appropriate means of responding to that risk or that fundamental obligation. Should professional ethics be implemented primarily through rules? Or, should we rely on character and the discretion of lawyers to make a thought out, all things considered, decision? Each of these three presents a fundamental difference in how we perceive and address issues of lawyers’ ethics. Each affects our understanding and analysis on multiple levels, from (1) determining the appropriate or requisite conduct in a particular situation, to (2) framing a specific rule or approach for a particular category of situations, to (3) more general or abstract theory or policy. A person’s inclinations in regard to the dichotomies affects the conclusions that person will reach on each of those levels of analysis, yet those inclinations and assumptions are frequently unexamined and unarticulated. One’s position on each of the dichotomies tends to structure the approach and outcome without the issues and choice having been explicitly addressed or possibly even noticed. This article is an effort to ameliorate that problem. Part I addresses the question of what is the risk in the work of lawyers, or the function of lawyers, for which professional ethics is the answer. The concluding section focuses on the particular problem of the corporation as client. Part II then asks the related and possibly consequent question of what is the foundational orientation or allegiance of the lawyer? Is it to the individual client? Or is it to some larger community interest? Again, the concluding section focuses on the corporation. Part III turns to the means or method for addressing the obligations and possible problems of the professional ethics of lawyers. Should lawyers’ ethics guide and confine the conduct of lawyers primarily through rules? Or should it function primarily through reliance on the knowledge, judgment and character of lawyers? If the latter were the guide, ethical decisions would be made on a situation by situation basis under the discretion of each lawyer. Toward the end of each discussion possibilities for bridging the dichotomy are considered (and with such bridges each dichotomy may come to look more like a spectrum or continuum.). At several points after its introduction in Parts I and II, the special problem of the corporation as client is revisited and possible solutions suggested. Illustrating the usefulness of keeping the dichotomies in view, Part IV applies them to several exemplary situations of ethical difficulty in actual lawyer practice. For readers finding it difficult to envision the consequences of these distinctions, turning ahead to Part IV may be useful in making the discussion more concrete. Some commonalities across the dichotomies and connections among them are then developed in the concluding section, Part V.

OS OBJETIVOS DESTE ESTUDO FORAM: CARACTERIZAR A POPULAÇÃO DE PACIENTES DE UMA CLÍNICA-ESCOLA; INVESTIGAR OS ASPECTOS PSICO-AFETIVOS ASSOCIADOS ÀS DOENÇAS PERIODONTAIS DESSES PACIENTES, ALÉM DOS RECURSOS DEFENSIVOS UTILIZADOS POR ELES. MÉTODO: LEVANTOU-SE DADOS SÓCIO-DEMOGRÁFICOS, DE SAÚDE GERAL E PERIODONTAL DE 789 PACIENTES ATENDIDOS NUM DEPARTAMENTO DE PERIODONTIA DE UMA CLÍNICA-ESCOLA DE ODONTOLOGIA, DADOS ESTES QUE CONSTITUÍRAM A ETAPA QUANTITATIVA DO ESTUDO. ESSA CARACTERIZAÇÃO FOI FEITA ATRAVÉS DE PLANILHAS ESPECIALMENTE ELABORADAS PARA A PESQUISA. A PARTIR DESSAS PLANILHAS, FOI SELECIONADA UMA SUB-AMOSTRA DE 273 PACIENTES QUE APRESENTARAM QUEIXAS EM TRÊS OU MAIS SISTEMAS ORGÂNICOS, ALÉM DA QUEIXA PERIODONTAL, OS QUAIS FORAM DENOMINADOS DE PACIENTES POLI-QUEIXOSOS. UMA TERCEIRA SUB-AMOSTRA INTEGROU 59 PACIENTES POLI-QUEIXOSOS, DIAGNOSTICADOS COM DOENÇA LEVE A MODERADA OU LEVE A SEVERA. DESSES PACIENTES, TRÊS FORAM ENTREVISTADOS E INTEGRARAM A AMOSTRA DA ETAPA QUALITATIVA DA PESQUISA. OS RESULTADOS INDICARAM QUE ENTRE PACIENTES POLI-QUEIXOSOS NÃO FOI ENCONTRADA CORRELAÇÃO SIGNIFICATIVA ENTRE DOENÇA PERIODONTAL LEVE A MODERADA OU LEVE A SEVERA COM GÊNERO, IDADE, ESTADO CIVIL, GRAU DE INSTRUÇÃO OU ATIVIDADE LABORAL. TAMBÉM NÃO HOUVE RELAÇÃO SIGNIFICATIVA QUANTO À PRESENÇA DE TABAGISMO, BRUXISMO, ONICOFAGIA E XEROSTOMIA. VERIFICAMOS QUE A DOENÇA PERIODONTAL CRÔNICA TEM SUAS ORIGENS NAS RELAÇÕES OBJETAIS DA MAIS TENRA INFÂNCIA E QUE AS ANSIEDADES ESQUIZO-PARANÓIDES QUE CARACTERIZAM ESSAS PRIMEIRAS RELAÇÕES, CONTINUAM PERMEANDO AS RELAÇÕES DURANTE TODA A VIDA DAS PACIENTES. COMO OS RECURSOS DEFENSIVOS UTILIZADOS SÃO PSIQUICAMENTE POUCO EVOLUÍDOS, O EQUILÍBRIO, A HOMEOSTASE É ENCONTRADA NA DOENÇA. CONCLUÍMOS QUE A DINÂMICA INTRA-PSÍQUICA PODE ESTAR ASSOCIADA NÃO SÓ À DOENÇA PERIODONTAL, MAS TAMBÉM AO ESTADO DE SAÚDE GERAL DESSES PACIENTES.

Despite being widely acknowledged as one of the most important German dramatists since Bertolt Brecht, Heiner Muller (1929-95) still remains relatively unknown in the English-speaking world. This collection of plays aims to change that, presenting new translations and opening up his work to a larger audience. Collected here are three of his plays - "Philoctetes", "The Horatian", and "Mauser" - that together constitute what Muller called an "experimental series," which both develops and critiques Brecht's theory of the Lehrstuck, or "learning play." Based on a tragedy by Sophocles, Philoctetes dramatizes the confrontation between politics, morality, and the desire for revenge. The Horatian uses an incident from ancient Rome as an example of ways of approaching the moral ambiguity of the past. Finally, Mauser, set during the Russian civil war, examines the nature and ethics of revolutionary violence. The plays are accompanied by supporting materials written by Muller himself, as well as an introduction by Uwe Schutte that contextualizes the plays and speaks of their continued relevance today.

This study was to explore the psychoanalytic process that writers experience when they write memoirs. With psychoanalytic theory, the findings were that when writers compose memoirs which include repressed information, the writer's word choice or word block is heavily influenced by his/her own moral code. This idea led to the assertions that first, we are fragmented because of the discordance that arises between the structures of morality and language, the latter which includes good and evil; second, when we write memoirs, we must create a fictional identity that allows the different fragments of identity to operate under the illusion of continuity that language provides; and third, the language we use may transcend our repressed information into consciousness. The conclusion was that when past immoral truths are uncovered, the various fragments with their selfish aims and the fictional identity cease to exist in the wake of being. ^

Deteriorating social behavior, negative media influence and violence among adolescents have given cause to pause and assess character development for the youth of this country. The purpose of this case study was to examine how a Muslim school’s curricula implemented character education. This study used a qualitative single-case methodology to examine character education as it was experienced by the participants in a private Muslim school. Data were collected from participant interviews, document analysis, and observations of classrooms, daily activities and special events. Data were analyzed to determine how character education was defined by the school, the method of delivery for the character education initiatives and the implementation of character education in this Muslim school. Analysis was based on Character Education Partnership’s (CEP) Eleven Principles of Effective Character Education (2007). The results of the study revealed: (a) participants defined character education using varied traits, processes, and expected behaviors. (b) The school delivers its character education curriculum primarily through the Islamic studies division; an add-on delivery method. Still, there was evidence of partial integration of character education in the core courses and (c) based on CEP’s Eleven Principles four were present and five were partially present in the school’s character education initiatives. Findings also revealed that the school’s emphasis on values, morality and spirituality was instrumental in their teaching character. Findings suggest that if participants in the school community work together they might formulate a definition of character education based on common process and expected behavior and create a collaborative working relationship to implement a character education program. Finally, addressing the absent and partially absent elements of the eleven principles could enhance the school’s character education initiatives. The study provides a process by which religious schools could examine their character education programs. The criteria used to measure the use of character education elements are transferable to other settings; however, this method of study does not allow generalization of findings.

Based on the empirical comparative study between two churches from Pentecostal guidance - both located in Parnamirim/RN - and supported on a dialogic interaction between my interlocutors and theoretical references, I proposed me to reflect about how this protestant segment represents and articulates questions such as gender and power relationships, and the daily impact of that in their followers life. In other words, this dissertation aims to understand the reason of the asymmetry attributed to male and female, especially in what concerns the distribution of ecclesiastic works and the authority given to male, as well as the implication of this reality in the reconfiguration of morality and religious praxis in daily life of individuals and involved groups. From this perspective, this work was divided in three chapters, in which I investigate the tension/relationship between faith and secularism, for from this question on concessions and/or prohibitions related to the limits and involvement of the followers with the world and with the very Pentecostal ethos arise. I also analyze here aspects concerning to both ecclesiastic hierarchy and power, with the objective of elucidating how it occurs, what kind of criteria and implications they consider as well as about the nature of the religious labor division between men and women and, finally, I try to understand how the conversion/adhesion of members is reflected in the redefinitions of gender and its relationship between the ecclesiastical and domestic spaces. The diligence and energy spent in this work is in the hope that its fruits can corroborate in the expansion of anthropological knowledge which, in this particular case, involves the Brazilian Pentecostal phenomenon

Is fairness in process and outcome a generalizable driver of police legitimacy? In many industrialized nations, studies have demonstrated that police legitimacy is largely a function of whether citizens perceive treatment as normatively fair and respectful. Questions remain whether this model holds in less-industrialized contexts, where corruption and security challenges favor instrumental preferences for effective crime control and prevention. Support for and against the normative model of legitimacy has been found in less-industrialized countries, yet few have simultaneously compared these models across multiple industrializing countries. Using a multilevel framework and data from respondents in 27 countries in sub-Saharan Africa (n~43,000), I find evidence for the presence of both instrumental and normative influences in shaping the perceptions of police legitimacy. More importantly, the internal consistency of legitimacy (defined as obligation to obey, moral alignment, and perceived legality of the police) varies considerably from country to country, suggesting that relationships between legality, morality, and obligation operate differently across contexts. Results are robust to a number of different modeling assumptions and alternative explanations. Overall, the results indicate that both fairness and effectiveness matter, not in all places, and in some cases contrary to theoretical expectations.
