Sex, sin and salvation : a case study of the narrative pictorial cycle of Saint Mary the Egyptian at Bourges Cathedral

This paper studies the narrative stained glass cycle of the Life of Saint Mary the Egyptian at Bourges Cathedral within the context of prevailing—and often conflicting--civil and ecclesiastical attitudes toward sex, sexual sin, and prostitution in early thirteenth century France. Although the Church maintained that sexual sin was mortal sin, civil records suggest the public was skeptical. Through the example of a penitent harlot, this window, both structurally and in thematic content, attempts to map a doctrinally appropriate path from sexual sin to purity of spirit—and salvation—through complete submission to the Church and its clergy.

Clarity, Light, and Logic : Parallels between Olafur Eliasson’s The weather project and the Gothic Cathedral

This Master’s Research Paper investigates Olafur Eliasson’s The weather project as a case study for the dialogue between Gothic artistic principles and prominent elements of contemporary art. A product of a post-modern mindset, weakened historicity allows us to examine these connections anew; past, present, and future blur and artists (and viewers) have the whole of time from which to gain inspiration and meaning in works of art. I demonstrate similarities through theories on phenomenology; the spatiotemporal relationship between viewer and artwork; the convergence of art and science; and the communal, quasi-liminal experience of pilgrimage. I embrace Eliasson’s belief in the self-reflexive potential of art and the importance of the viewer’s own values, memories, and methods of seeing. This new interpretive layer will hopefully offer a richer experience for future participants of both Gothic cathedrals and environments produced by Studio Olafur Eliasson.

Manchester, Chetham's Library MS 8009 (Mun. A.6.31): A Codicological Description

This article presents a complete codicological description of Manchester, Chetham's Library, MS 8009 (Mun.A.6.31), a late fifteenth-century production that contains a combination of secular and religious texts. The manuscript's significance for both the literary and textual scholar was recognized by Derek Pearsall when he suggested its suitability for a facsimile edition. The restrictions imposed by the Governors of the Library for reproduction under the present conditions, however, suggest that Pearsall's recommendation may have to wait for some time. The purpose of this paper is to fill that void by correcting some inaccuracies in previous descriptions and completing them with supporting visual evidence.

This nautical chart shows coastal features such as lighthouses, rocks, shoals, channels, points, coves, harbors, anchor points, islands, and more. Depths are shown by soundings and shading. Land features include settlements, selected buildings and roads, and more. Relief is shown pictorially. This layer is part of a selection of digitally scanned and georeferenced historic maps of Massachusetts from the Harvard Map Collection. These maps typically portray both natural and manmade features. The selection represents a range of regions, originators, ground condition dates (1755-1922), scales, and purposes. The digitized selection includes maps of: the state, Massachusetts counties, town surveys, coastal features, real property, parks, cemeteries, railroads, roads, public works projects, etc.
