This paper presents a conceptual approach to enhance knowledge management by synchronizing mind maps and fuzzy cognitive maps. The use of mind maps allows taking advantage of human creativity, while the application of fuzzy cognitive maps enables to store information expressed in natural language. By applying cognitive computing, it makes possible to gather and extract relevant information out of a data pool. Therefore, this approach is supposed to give a framework that enhances knowledge management. To demonstrate the potential of this framework, a use case concerning the development of a smart city app is presented.

Thoracic aortic aneurysms leading to aortic dissections (TAAD) are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States. TAAD is a complication of some known genetic disorders, such as Marfan syndrome and Turner syndrome, but the majority of familial cases are not due to a known genetic syndrome. Previous studies by our group have established that nonsyndromic, familial TAAD is inherited in an autosomal dominant manner with decreased penetrance and variable expression. Using one large family with multiple members with TAAD for the genome wide scan, a major locus for familial TAAD was mapped to 5q13–14 (TAAD1). Nine out of 15 families studied were linked to this locus, establishing that TAAD1 was a major locus, and that there was genetic heterogeneity for the condition. Mapping of TAAD2 locus was accomplished using a single large family with multiple members with TAAD not linked to known loci of aneurysm formation. This established a second novel locus for familial TAAD on 3p24–25 (LOD score of 4.3), termed the TAAD2 locus. Two putative loci with suggestive LOD scores were mapped on 4q and 12q through a genome scan carried out using three families. TAAD phenotype in 12 families did not segregate with known loci, indicating further genetic heterogeneity. An STS-tagged BAC based contig was constructed for 7.8Mb and 25Mb critical interval of TAAD1 and TAAD2 respectively and characterized to identify the defective gene. The hypothesis that the defective genes responsible for the TAAD1 and TAAD2 encoded extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins, the major components of the elastic fiber system in the aortic media was tested. Four genes encoding ECM proteins, versican, thrombospondin-3, CRTL1, on TAAD1 and FBLN2 at TAAD2 were sequenced, but no disease-causing mutations were identified. Studies to identify the defective gene are initiated through the positional candidate gene approach using combination of bioinformatics and expression studies. The identification of the TAAD susceptibility genes will allow for presymptomatic diagnosis of individuals at risk for this life threatening disease. The identification of the molecular defects that contribute to TAAD will also further our understanding of the proteins that provide structural integrity to the aortic wall. ^

Monument conservation is related to the interaction between the original petrological parameters of the rock and external factors in the area where the building is sited, such as weather conditions, pollution, and so on. Depending on the environmental conditions and the characteristics of the materials used, different types of weathering predominate. In all, the appearance of surface crusts constitutes a first stage, whose origin can often be traced to the properties of the material itself. In the present study, different colours of “patinas” were distinguished by defining the threshold levels of greys associated with “pathology” in the histogram. These data were compared to background information and other parameters, such as mineralogical composition, porosity, and so on, as well as other visual signs of deterioration. The result is a map of the pathologies associated with “cover films” on monuments, which generate images by relating colour characteristics to desired properties or zones of interest.

A system for simultaneous 2D estimation of rectangular room and transceiver localization is proposed. The system is based on two radio transceivers, both capable of full duplex operations (simultaneous transmission and reception). This property enables measurements of channel impulse response (CIR) at the same place the signal is transmitted (generated), commonly known as self-to-self CIR. Another novelty of the proposed system is the spatial CIR discrimination that is possible with the receiver antenna design which consists of eight sectorized antennas with 45° aperture in the horizontal plane and total coverage equal to the isotropic one. The dimensions of a rectangular room are reconstructed directly from spatial radio impulse responses by extracting the information regarding round trip time (RTT). Using radar approach estimation of walls and corners positions is derived. Tests using measured data were performed, and the simulation results confirm the feasibility of the approach.

The aim of this work is to provide the necessary methods to register and fuse the endo-epicardial signal intensity (SI) maps extracted from contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (ceMRI) with X-ray coronary ngiograms using an intrinsic registrationbased algorithm to help pre-planning and guidance of catheterization procedures. Fusion of angiograms with SI maps was treated as a 2D-3D pose estimation, where each image point is projected to a Plücker line, and the screw representation for rigid motions is minimized using a gradient descent method. The resultant transformation is applied to the SI map that is then projected and fused on each angiogram. The proposed method was tested in clinical datasets from 6 patients with prior myocardial infarction. The registration procedure is optionally combined with an iterative closest point algorithm (ICP) that aligns the ventricular contours segmented from two ventriculograms.

Steroidogenic acute regulatory protein (StAR) appears to mediate the rapid increase in pregnenolone synthesis stimulated by tropic hormones. cDNAs encoding StAR were isolated from a human adrenal cortex library. Human StAR, coexpressed in COS-1 cells with cytochrome P450scc and adrenodoxin, increased pregnenolone synthesis > 4-fold. A major StAR transcript of 1.6 kb and less abundant transcripts of 4.4 and 7.5 kb were detected in ovary and testis. Kidney had a lower amount of the 1.6-kb message. StAR mRNA was not detected in other tissues including placenta. Treatment of granulosa cells with 8-bromo-adenosine 3',5'-cyclic monophosphate for 24 hr increased StAR mRNA 3-fold or more. The structural gene encoding StAR was mapped using somatic cell hybrid mapping panels to chromosome 8p. Fluorescence in situ hybridization placed the StAR locus in the region 8p11.2. A StAR pseudogene was mapped to chromosome 13. We conclude that StAR expression is restricted to tissues that carry out mitochondrial sterol oxidations subject to acute regulation by cAMP and that StAR mRNA levels are regulated by cAMP.

Landscape units based on the visual features of the relief have been distinguished in the “Barranco del Río Dulce Natural Park” (Spain). These units are geomorphic entities composed of several elementary landforms and characterized by a visual internal homogeneity, and contrast with other landscape units in their location, height, profile and gradients, reflecting their different evolution and genesis. Landscape units bear some subjectivity in their definition and in their boundary location due to the overlapping of geomorphic processes along time. Visual, compositional and conventional boundaries have been used for mapping. Neogene landscape evolution mainly occurred through thrust faulting at the Iberian Ranges-Tagus Basin boundary, driving tectonic uplift and erosion of the Ranges and correlative sedimentation in the Basin. Erosion of the Ranges occurred with the development of planation surfaces, leaving minor isolated reliefs in the upland plains landscape. The lowering of the base level, caused by the endorheic–exorheic transition of the Tagus Basin in the Pliocene, originates fluvial entrenchment and water table lowering with development of the first fluvial valleys and the capture of karstic depressions. Two subsequent phases of renewed fluvial incision (Pleistocene) lead to abandonment of some Pliocene valleys, fluvial captures, and development and reincision of tributaries

This paper proposes a method for diagnosing the impacts of second-home tourism and illustrates it for a Mediterranean Spanish destination. This method proposes the application of network analysis software to the analysis of causal maps in order to create a causal network model based on stakeholder-identified impacts. The main innovation is the analysis of indirect relations in causal maps for the identification of the most influential nodes in the model. The results show that the most influential nodes are of a political nature, which contradicts previous diagnoses identifying technical planning as the ultimate cause of problems.
