Even when data repositories exhibit near perfect data quality, users may formulate queries that do not correspond to the information requested. Users’ poor information retrieval performance may arise from either problems understanding of the data models that represent the real world systems, or their query skills. This research focuses on users’ understanding of the data structures, i.e., their ability to map the information request and the data model. The Bunge-Wand-Weber ontology was used to formulate three sets of hypotheses. Two laboratory experiments (one using a small data model and one using a larger data model) tested the effect of ontological clarity on users’ performance when undertaking component, record, and aggregate level tasks. The results indicate for the hypotheses associated with different representations but equivalent semantics that parsimonious data model participants performed better for component level tasks but that ontologically clearer data model participants performed better for record and aggregate level tasks.

Innovation is part and parcel of any service in today's environment, so as to remain competitive. Quality improvement in healthcare services is a complex, multi-dimensional task. This study proposes innovation management in healthcare services using a logical framework. A problem tree and an objective tree are developed to identify and mitigate issues and concerns. A logical framework is formulated to develop a plan for implementation and monitoring strategies, potentially creating an environment for continuous quality improvement in a specific unit. We recommend logical framework as a valuable model for innovation management in healthcare services. Copyright © 2006 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to develop an integrated quality management model that identifies problems, suggests solutions, develops a framework for implementation and helps to evaluate dynamically healthcare service performance. Design/methodology/approach - This study used the logical framework analysis (LFA) to improve the performance of healthcare service processes. LFA has three major steps - problems identification, solution derivation, and formation of a planning matrix for implementation. LFA has been applied in a case-study environment to three acute healthcare services (Operating Room utilisation, Accident and Emergency, and Intensive Care) in order to demonstrate its effectiveness. Findings - The paper finds that LFA is an effective method of quality management of hospital-based healthcare services. Research limitations/implications - This study shows LFA application in three service processes in one hospital. This very limited population sample needs to be extended. Practical implications - The proposed model can be implemented in hospital-based healthcare services in order to improve performance. It may also be applied to other services. Originality/value - Quality improvement in healthcare services is a complex and multi-dimensional task. Although various quality management tools are routinely deployed for identifying quality issues in healthcare delivery, they are not without flaws. There is an absence of an integrated approach, which can identify and analyse issues, provide solutions to resolve those issues, develop a project management framework to implement those solutions. This study introduces an integrated and uniform quality management tool for healthcare services. © Emerald Group Publishing Limited.

The article focuses on the Trade Marks Regulations 2004, which came into force on May 5, 2004. Regulation 7 repeals s 5(3)(b) and amends s 10(3) of the Trade Marks Act 1994, implementing the decision of the European Court of Justice in Davidoff & Cie SA and Zino Davidoff SA v Gofkid Ltd., which was then confirmed in Adidas-Salomon AG and Adidas Benelux BV v Fitnessworld Trading Ltd. The orthodox definition of the primary and proper function of a trademark is that it is to identify the origin or ownership of the goods to which the mark is affixed. As society has changed so too have the functions of the trademark. Due to increased affluence and the growth of the consumer society, some trademarks may now have achieved the status of being a symbol of desire in their own right.

Earlier the authors have suggested a logical level description of classes which allows to reduce a solution of various pattern recognition problems to solution of a sequence of one-type problems with the less dimension. Here conditions of the effectiveness of the use of such a level descriptions are proposed.

An application of the heterogeneous variables system prediction method to solving the time series analysis problem with respect to the sample size is considered in this work. It is created a logical-and-probabilistic correlation from the logical decision function class. Two ways is considered. When the information about event is kept safe in the process, and when it is kept safe in depending process.

A verification task of proving the equivalence of two descriptions of the same device is examined for the case, when one of the descriptions is partially defined. In this case, the verification task is reduced to checking out whether logical descriptions are equivalent on the domain of the incompletely defined one. Simulation-based approach to solving this task for different vector forms of description representations is proposed. Fast Boolean computations over Boolean and ternary vectors having big sizes underlie the offered methods.

Authors suggested earlier hierarchical method for definition of class description at pattern recognition problems solution. In this paper development and use of such hierarchical descriptions for parallel representation of complex patterns on the base of multi-core computers or neural networks is proposed.

The paper is devoted to the description of hybrid pattern recognition method developed by research groups from Russia, Armenia and Spain. The method is based upon logical correction over the set of conventional neural networks. Output matrices of neural networks are processed according to the potentiality principle which allows increasing of recognition reliability.

The current INFRAWEBS European research project aims at developing ICT framework enabling software and service providers to generate and establish open and extensible development platforms for Web Service applications. One of the concrete project objectives is developing a full-life-cycle software toolset for creating and maintaining Semantic Web Services (SWSs) supporting specific applications based on Web Service Modelling Ontology (WSMO) framework. According to WSMO, functional and behavioural descriptions of a SWS may be represented by means of complex logical expressions (axioms). The paper describes a specialized userfriendly tool for constructing and editing such axioms – INFRAWEBS Axiom Editor. After discussing the main design principles of the Editor, its functional architecture is briefly presented. The tool is implemented in Eclipse Graphical Environment Framework and Eclipse Rich Client Platform.
