This paper presents some further results on proximal and asymptotic proximal contractions and on a class of generalized weak proximal contractions in metric spaces. The generalizations are stated for non-self-mappings of the forms for and , or , subject to and , such that converges uniformly to T, and the distances are iteration-dependent, where , , and are non-empty subsets of X, for , where is a metric space, provided that the set-theoretic limit of the sequences of closed sets and exist as and that the countable infinite unions of the closed sets are closed. The convergence of the sequences in the domain and the image sets of the non-self-mapping, as well as the existence and uniqueness of the best proximity points, are also investigated if the metric space is complete. Uma rede de trocadores de calor pode ser definida como um grupo de trocadores de calor interligados com o objetivo de reduzir a necessidade de energia de um sistema, sendo largamente usada nas indústrias de processos. Entretanto, uma rede está sujeita à deposição, a qual causa um decréscimo na efetividade térmica dos trocadores. Este fenômeno é provocado pelo acúmulo de materiais indesejáveis sobre a superfície de troca térmica. Para compensar a redução de efetividade térmica causada pela deposição, torna-se necessário um aumento no consumo de utilidades. Isto eleva os custos de operação, assim como os custos de manutenção. Estima-se que os custos associados à deposição atinjam bilhões de dólares anualmente. Em face a este problema, vários trabalhos de pesquisa têm investigado métodos para prevenir a deposição e/ou gerenciar as operações em uma rede. Estudos envolvem desde a otimização de trocadores de calor individuais, simulação e monitoramento de redes, até a otimização da programação das paradas para limpeza de trocadores de calor em uma rede. O presente trabalho apresenta a proposição de um modelo para simulação de redes de trocadores de calor com aplicações no gerenciamento da deposição. Como conseqüência, foi desenvolvido um conjunto de códigos computacionais integrados, envolvendo a simulação estacionária de redes, a simulação pseudo-estacionária do comportamento de redes em relação à evolução da deposição, a estimação de parâmetros para diagnóstico do problema da deposição e a otimização operacional deste tipo de sistema. Com relação ao simulador estacionário, o modelo da rede foi formulado matricialmente e os balanços de massa e energia são resolvidos como sistemas de equações lineares. Do ponto de vista da otimização, o procedimento proposto redistribui as vazões, visando um melhor aproveitamento térmico dos trocadores da rede, como, por exemplo, buscando as vazões da rede que maximizem a temperatura da corrente de entrada no forno em unidades de destilação atmosférica de óleo cru. Os algoritmos foram implementados em alguns exemplos da literatura e em um problema de uma refinaria real. Os resultados foram promissores, o que sugere que a proposta deste trabalho pode vir a ser uma abordagem interessante para operações envolvendo redes de trocadores de calor

The architecture of model predictive control (MPC), with its explicit internal model and constrained optimization is presented. Since MPC relies on an explicit internal model, one can imagine dealing with failures by updating the internal model, and letting the on-line optimizer work out how to control the system in its new condition. This aspects rely on assumptions such that the nature of the fault can be located, and the model can be updated automatically. A standard form of MPC, with linear inequality constraints on inputs and outputs, linear internal model, and quadriatic cost function.

In our previous work, we developed TRAFFIC(X), a specification language for modeling bi-directional network flows featuring a type system with constrained polymorphism. In this paper, we present two ways to customize the constraint system: (1) when using linear inequality constraints for the constraint system, TRAFFIC(X) can describe flows with numeric properties such as MTU (maximum transmission unit), RTT (round trip time), traversal order, and bandwidth allocation over parallel paths; (2) when using Boolean predicate constraints for the constraint system, TRAFFIC(X) can describe routing policies of an IP network. These examples illustrate how to use the customized type system.

The case for energy policy modelling is strong in Ireland, where stringent EU climate targets are projected to be overshot by 2015. Policy targets aiming to deliver greenhouse gas and renewable energy targets have been made, but it is unclear what savings are to be achieved and from which sectors. Concurrently, the growth of personal mobility has caused an astonishing increase in CO2 emissions from private cars in Ireland, a 37% rise between 2000 and 2008, and while there have been improvements in the efficiency of car technology, there was no decrease in the energy intensity of the car fleet in the same period. This thesis increases the capacity for evidenced-based policymaking in Ireland by developing techno-economic transport energy models and using them to analyse historical trends and to project possible future scenarios. A central focus of this thesis is to understand the effect of the car fleet‘s evolving technical characteristics on energy demand. A car stock model is developed to analyse this question from three angles: Firstly, analysis of car registration and activity data between 2000 and 2008 examines the trends which brought about the surge in energy demand. Secondly, the car stock is modelled into the future and is used to populate a baseline “no new policy” scenario, looking at the impact of recent (2008-2011) policy and purchasing developments on projected energy demand and emissions. Thirdly, a range of technology efficiency, fuel switching and behavioural scenarios are developed up to 2025 in order to indicate the emissions abatement and renewable energy penetration potential from alternative policy packages. In particular, an ambitious car fleet electrification target for Ireland is examined. The car stock model‘s functionality is extended by linking it with other models: LEAP-Ireland, a bottom-up energy demand model for all energy sectors in the country; Irish TIMES, a linear optimisation energy system model; and COPERT, a pollution model. The methodology is also adapted to analyse trends in freight energy demand in a similar way. Finally, this thesis addresses the gap in the representation of travel behaviour in linear energy systems models. The extension of the bootstrap filter to the multiple model target tracking problem is considered. Bayesian bootstrap filtering is a very powerful technique since it represents samples by random samples and is therefore not restricted to linear, Gaussian systems, making it ideal for the multiple model problem where very complex densities fan be generated.

System Dynamics enables modelling and simulation of highly non-linear feedback systems to predict future system behaviour. Parameter estimation and equation formulation are techniques in System Dynamics, used to retrieve the values of parameters or the equations for ?ows and/or variables. These techniques are crucial for the annotations and thereafter the simulation. This paper critically examines existing and well established approaches in parameter estimation and equation formulation along with their limitations, identifying performance gaps as well as providing directions for potential future research.

Cette thèse traite de la classification analytique du déploiement de systèmes différentiels linéaires ayant une singularité irrégulière. Elle est composée de deux articles sur le sujet: le premier présente des résultats obtenus lors de l'étude de la confluence de l'équation hypergéométrique et peut être considéré comme un cas particulier du second; le deuxième contient les théorèmes et résultats principaux. Dans les deux articles, nous considérons la confluence de deux points singuliers réguliers en un point singulier irrégulier et nous étudions les conséquences de la divergence des solutions au point singulier irrégulier sur le comportement des solutions du système déployé. Pour ce faire, nous recouvrons un voisinage de l'origine (de manière ramifiée) dans l'espace du paramètre de déploiement $\epsilon$. La monodromie d'une base de solutions bien choisie est directement reliée aux matrices de Stokes déployées. Ces dernières donnent une interprétation géométrique aux matrices de Stokes, incluant le lien (existant au moins pour les cas génériques) entre la divergence des solutions à $\epsilon=0$ et la présence de solutions logarithmiques autour des points singuliers réguliers lors de la résonance. La monodromie d'intégrales premières de systèmes de Riccati correspondants est aussi interprétée en fonction des éléments des matrices de Stokes déployées. De plus, dans le second article, nous donnons le système complet d'invariants analytiques pour le déploiement de systèmes différentiels linéaires $x^2y'=A(x)y$ ayant une singularité irrégulière de rang de Poincaré $1$ à l'origine au-dessus d'un voisinage fixé $\mathbb{D}_r$ dans la variable $x$. Ce système est constitué d'une partie formelle, donnée par des polynômes, et d'une partie analytique, donnée par une classe d'équivalence de matrices de Stokes déployées. Pour chaque valeur du paramètre $\epsilon$ dans un secteur pointé à l'origine d'ouverture plus grande que $2\pi$, nous recouvrons l'espace de la variable, $\mathbb{D}_r$, avec deux secteurs et, au-dessus de chacun, nous choisissons une base de solutions du système déployé. Cette base sert à définir les matrices de Stokes déployées. Finalement, nous prouvons un théorème de réalisation des invariants qui satisfont une condition nécessaire et suffisante, identifiant ainsi l'ensemble des modules.

La thèse est composée d’un chapitre de préliminaires et de deux articles sur le sujet du déploiement de singularités d’équations différentielles ordinaires analytiques dans le plan complexe. L’article Analytic classification of families of linear differential systems unfolding a resonant irregular singularity traite le problème de l’équivalence analytique de familles paramétriques de systèmes linéaires en dimension 2 qui déploient une singularité résonante générique de rang de Poincaré 1 dont la matrice principale est composée d’un seul bloc de Jordan. La question: quand deux telles familles sontelles équivalentes au moyen d’un changement analytique de coordonnées au voisinage d’une singularité? est complètement résolue et l’espace des modules des classes d’équivalence analytiques est décrit en termes d’un ensemble d’invariants formels et d’un invariant analytique, obtenu à partir de la trace de la monodromie. Des déploiements universels sont donnés pour toutes ces singularités. Dans l’article Confluence of singularities of non-linear differential equations via Borel–Laplace transformations on cherche des solutions bornées de systèmes paramétriques des équations non-linéaires de la variété centre de dimension 1 d’une singularité col-noeud déployée dans une famille de champs vectoriels complexes. En général, un système d’ÉDO analytiques avec une singularité double possède une unique solution formelle divergente au voisinage de la singularité, à laquelle on peut associer des vraies solutions sur certains secteurs dans le plan complexe en utilisant les transformations de Borel–Laplace. L’article montre comment généraliser cette méthode et déployer les solutions sectorielles. On construit des solutions de systèmes paramétriques, avec deux singularités régulières déployant une singularité irrégulière double, qui sont bornées sur des domaines «spirals» attachés aux deux points singuliers, et qui, à la limite, convergent vers une paire de solutions sectorielles couvrant un voisinage de la singularité confluente. La méthode apporte une description unifiée pour toutes les valeurs du paramètre.

Natural systems are inherently non linear. Recurrent behaviours are typical of natural systems. Recurrence is a fundamental property of non linear dynamical systems which can be exploited to characterize the system behaviour effectively. Cross recurrence based analysis of sensor signals from non linear dynamical system is presented in this thesis. The mutual dependency among relatively independent components of a system is referred as coupling. The analysis is done for a mechanically coupled system specifically designed for conducting experiment. Further, cross recurrence method is extended to the actual machining process in a lathe to characterize the chatter during turning. The result is verified by permutation entropy method. Conventional linear methods or models are incapable of capturing the critical and strange behaviours associated with the dynamical process. Hence any effective feature extraction methodologies should invariably gather information thorough nonlinear time series analysis. The sensor signals from the dynamical system normally contain noise and non stationarity. In an effort to get over these two issues to the maximum possible extent, this work adopts the cross recurrence quantification analysis (CRQA) methodology since it is found to be robust against noise and stationarity in the signals. The study reveals that the CRQA is capable of characterizing even weak coupling among system signals. It also divulges the dependence of certain CRQA variables like percent determinism, percent recurrence and entropy to chatter unambiguously. The surrogate data test shows that the results obtained by CRQA are the true properties of the temporal evolution of the dynamics and contain a degree of deterministic structure. The results are verified using permutation entropy (PE) to detect the onset of chatter from the time series. The present study ascertains that this CRP based methodology is capable of recognizing the transition from regular cutting to the chatter cutting irrespective of the machining parameters or work piece material. The results establish this methodology to be feasible for detection of chatter in metal cutting operation in a lathe.

We consider numerical methods for the compressible time dependent Navier-Stokes equations, discussing the spatial discretization by Finite Volume and Discontinuous Galerkin methods, the time integration by time adaptive implicit Runge-Kutta and Rosenbrock methods and the solution of the appearing nonlinear and linear equations systems by preconditioned Jacobian-Free Newton-Krylov, as well as Multigrid methods. As applications, thermal Fluid structure interaction and other unsteady flow problems are considered. The text is aimed at both mathematicians and engineers.

The recursive least-squares algorithm with a forgetting factor has been extensively applied and studied for the on-line parameter estimation of linear dynamic systems. This paper explores the use of genetic algorithms to improve the performance of the recursive least-squares algorithm in the parameter estimation of time-varying systems. Simulation results show that the hybrid recursive algorithm (GARLS), combining recursive least-squares with genetic algorithms, can achieve better results than the standard recursive least-squares algorithm using only a forgetting factor.

Current mathematical models in building research have been limited in most studies to linear dynamics systems. A literature review of past studies investigating chaos theory approaches in building simulation models suggests that as a basis chaos model is valid and can handle the increasingly complexity of building systems that have dynamic interactions among all the distributed and hierarchical systems on the one hand, and the environment and occupants on the other. The review also identifies the paucity of literature and the need for a suitable methodology of linking chaos theory to mathematical models in building design and management studies. This study is broadly divided into two parts and presented in two companion papers. Part (I) reviews the current state of the chaos theory models as a starting point for establishing theories that can be effectively applied to building simulation models. Part (II) develops conceptual frameworks that approach current model methodologies from the theoretical perspective provided by chaos theory, with a focus on the key concepts and their potential to help to better understand the nonlinear dynamic nature of built environment systems. Case studies are also presented which demonstrate the potential usefulness of chaos theory driven models in a wide variety of leading areas of building research. This study distills the fundamental properties and the most relevant characteristics of chaos theory essential to building simulation scientists, initiates a dialogue and builds bridges between scientists and engineers, and stimulates future research about a wide range of issues on building environmental systems.
