Automatische Berechnung von Grenzwerten und Implementierung in Mathematica

Grenzwertberechnung ist ein unbeliebtes Gebiet der Mathematik. Jeder Schüler hasst es. Das liegt daran, dass es kein universelles Kochrezept gibt, das einen automatisch zur Lösung führt. Statt dessen muss man verschiedenste Ansätze daraufhin überprüfen, ob sie einen einer Lösung näher bringen. Computeralgebra leidet unter dem gleichen Problem, denn Computer lieben Kochrezepte ebenfalls. Entsprechend haben manche Computeralgebrasysteme auch heute noch starke Probleme mit Grenzwerten. 1996 stellte Dominik Gruntz in seiner Dissertation "On Computing Limits in a Symbolic Manipulation System" einen Algorithmus vor, der eine Vielzahl komplexer Grenzwertaufgaben souverän und schnell lösen kann und der dennoch durch seine Einfachheit und Überschaubarkeit besticht. Ziel dieser Diplomarbeit ist es, den Algorithmus von Dominik Gruntz vorzustellen und im Computeralgebrasystem Mathematica zu implementieren.

Heavy metal and microbial loads in sewage irrigated vegetables of Kabul, Afghanistan

Little is known about the heavy metal and microbial contamination of vegetables produced in Central Asian cities. We therefore measured the concentration of cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn) and of faecal pathogens (Coliform bacteria, Salmonella sp., Shigella sp., Ascaris lubricoides, Entamoeba sp. and pinworms [Oxyuris vermicularis syn. Enterobius vermicularis]) in soil, irrigation water, and marketed vegetables of Kabul City, Afghanistan. Leaf Pb and Zn concentrations of leafy vegetables were with 1–5 and 33–160 mg kg^{-1} dry weight (DW) several-fold above respective international thresholds of 0.3 mg Pb kg^{-1} and 50 mg Zn kg^{-1}. The tissue concentration of Cu was below threshold limits in all samples except for spinach in one farm. Above-threshold loads of microbes and parasites on vegetables were found in five out of six gardens with coliforms ranging from 0.5–2 × 10^7 cells 100g^{-1} fresh weight (FW), but no Salmonella and Shigella were found. Contamination with 0.2 × 10^7 eggs 100g^{-1} FW of Ascaris was detected on produce of three farms and critical concentrations of Entamoeba in a single case, while Oxyuris vermicularis, and Enterobius vermicularis were found on produce of three and four farms, respectively. Irrigation water had Ascaris, Coliforms, Salmonella, Shigella, Entamoeba, and Oxyuris vermicularis syn. Enterobius vermicularis ranging from 0.35 × 10^7 to 2 × 10^7 cells l^{-1}. The heavy metal and microbial loads on fresh UPA vegetables are likely the result of contamination from rising traffic, residues of the past decades of war and lacking treatment of sewage which needs urgent attention.

Los TBI (Tratado Bilateral de Inversión) o también denominado los APPI (Acuerdo de Protección y Promoción de las Inversiones) son acuerdos que buscan la Protección y la Promoción de las inversiones que hagan los nacionales de un Estado en otro Estado conocido como el “Estado Receptor”. Los TBI y APPI fueron concebidos dentro del proceso de descolonización que le siguió a la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Esto se debe a que los Estados que habían colonizado otros territorios, ahora Estados soberanos y sus nacionales, seguían teniendo fuertes lazos e intereses económicos. Con el ánimo de protegerse de posibles expropiaciones, los Estados europeos liderados por Alemania, firmaron un número importante de TBI y APPI, no solamente con sus antiguas colonias, sino con otras. De esta manera, Alemania, Suiza, Holanda, Italia, Bélgica y Suecia suscribieron al menos cuarenta tratados de este tipo con varios Estados asiáticos, africanos y del medio oriente entre 1959 y 1965. Estados Unidos se demoró unos veinte o treinta años más, porque los estadounidenses no solamente aspiraban a obtener protección para sus inversionistas, sino que además solicitaban que se abriera y liberara la economía de los Estados firmantes. Finalmente, fue en la administración de Ronald Reagan que los Estados Unidos comenzó a suscribirlos.

Achieving satisfactory contractual terms for the engineer's role

An international survey of clients, consultants and contractors produced wide-ranging data on the views of users of the FIDIC form of contract. The purpose of the survey was to elicit views on a range of issues, prior to revising the model form, to ensure that the contract drafters produce a form that is satisfactory for its users. Those questions that focus upon the role of the engineer have been subjected to detailed statistical analysis. The analysis shows that, contrary to popular belief, the views of contract users from common law jurisdictions do not differ from those in civil code jurisdictions. The engineer’s role is not generally perceived as neutral in the contractual relationships between clients and contractors. Contractors would prefer someone other than the engineer to be the first-line settler of disputes in contracts.

Practicing sustainability in PFI project management

This paper investigates the relationship of the project management in Private Finance Initiative (PFI) and sustainability. A live PFI project is selected as a case study, where contract review and monitoring on project management are carried out to evaluate the sustainability of project management. The PFI procurement shows great advantages in increased contractual responsibilities of the contractor in sustainable construction, and also in practicing sustainability in project management. Six main sustainable attributes of the project management are selected to evaluate the sustainability of project management in the PFI project. The project management process in the case study is closely monitored in order to verify how the PFI project promotes sustainability in practice. The project management in the different stages of the PFI project, including tendering, design, construction and operation, contributes to the six sustainable attributes in different ways. The project management in PFI project paid more attention in sustainable development during its whole process. As the private sector is responsible to the whole life of the building project, the project manager has to consider the long-term benefits during the management process. The government should take advantages of PFI project management in practicing sustainability therefore to promote sustainable development of the national infrastructure services.

Genetic heterogeneity in erythropoietic protoporphyria: a study of the enzymatic defect in nine affected families

Erythropoietic protoporphyria (EPP) is associated with a deficiency of protohaem ferrolyase. We have used a novel assay for this enzyme based on its ability to utilize zinc as a substrate to investigate the inheritance of EPP in nine affected families. Zinc chelatase activity was markedly reduced in peripheral blood mononuclear cells from 14 EPP patients (mean, 3.3 nmol Zn protohaem/h/mg protein; range, 0.3-8.0) when compared with 41 controls (16.8 +/- 3.6) p less than 0.01. In three families with parent-to-child transmission of disease, the asymptomatic parent had an enzymatic activity within the normal range. In three pedigrees where the parents were asymptomatic, enzymatic activities were below the 95% confidence limits in both. Zinc chelatase activity was below the mean control value in 17 of the 18 parents in nine affected pedigrees, and six of seven asymptomatic offspring of patients with protoporphyria. The findings suggest that EPP is not transmitted as a simple dominant trait and that inheritance of more than one gene may be required for disease expression.

Digital visualisation in Classics teaching and beyond

For the last few years, I have been working on an extensive digital model of ancient Rome as it appeared in the early 4th Century AD. This sort of visualisation lends itself to many applications in diverse fields: I am currently using it for research work into illumination and sightlines in the ancient city, have licensed it for broadcast in TV documentaries and publication in magazines, and am working with a computer games studio to turn it into an online game where players will be able to walk round the streets and buildings of the entire city (when not engaged in trading with or assassinating one another). Later this year I will be making a free online course, or MOOC, about the architecture of ancient Rome, which will largely be illustrated by this model.

Phylogeny, species limits, and biogeography of the Brazilian lizards of the genus Eurolophosaurus (Squamata : Tropiduridae) as inferred from mitochondrial DNA sequences

Phylogenetic relationships and divergence times for 10 populations of the three recognized ""species"" of Brazilian lizards of genus Eurolophosaurus were estimated from 1229 bp of cyt b, COI, 12S, and 16S rRNA mitochondrial gene segments. Eurolophosaurus is monophyletic and the basal split within the genus separates E divaricatus from a clade comprising E amathites and E nanuzae. Three populations of E divaricatus, which occurs along the western bank of Rio S (a) over tildeo Francisco, were consistently grouped together. Oil the east bank of the river, E amathites and E nanuzae from state of Bahia were recovered as the sister group of E nanuzae populations from state of Minas Gerais. The paraphyly of E nanuzae and the high divergence levels among populations of E divaricatus strongly suggest that species limits in Eurolophosaurus should be revised. Even considering an extreme evolutionary rate of 2.8% sequence divergence per million years for the four gene segments analyzed together, E. divaricatus would have separated from the two other species by at least 5.5 my ago, and E. amathites from E nanuzae populations from Bahia and Minas Gerais, respectively, by 1.5 and 3.5 my. The paleolacustrine hypothesis and changes in the course of the river potentially explain faunal divergence in the area, but divergences are much older than previously admitted. Paper surfaces and dynamical limits

It is very common in mathematics to construct surfaces by identifying the sides of a polygon together in pairs: For example, identifying opposite sides of a square yields a torus. In this article the construction is considered in the case where infinitely many pairs of segments around the boundary of the polygon are identified. The topological, metric, and complex structures of the resulting surfaces are discussed: In particular, a condition is given under which the surface has a global complex structure (i.e., is a Riemann surface). In this case, a modulus of continuity for a uniformizing map is given. The motivation for considering this construction comes from dynamical systems theory: If the modulus of continuity is uniform across a family of such constructions, each with an iteration defined on it, then it is possible to take limits in the family and hence to complete it. Such an application is briefly discussed.

General equilibrium model with restricted participation in financial markets

The paper analyses a general equilibrium model with financiaI markets in which households may face restrictions in trading financiaI assets such as borrowing constraints and collateral (restricted participation model). However, markets are not assumed to be incomplete. We consider a standard general equilibrium model with H > 1 households, 2 periods and S states of nature in the second period. We show that generically the set of equilibrium allocations ia indeterminate, provided the existence of at least one nominal asset and one household for who some restriction is binding. Suppose there are C > 1 commodities in each state of nature and assets pays in units of some commodity. In this case for each household with binding restrictions it is possible to reduce the set of feasible assets trading and obtain a new equilibrium that utility improve alI those households. There is however an upper bound on the number of households to be improved related to the number of states of nature and the number of commodities. In particular, if the number of households ia smaller than the number of states of nature it is possible to Pareto improve any equilibrium by reducing the feasible choice set for each household.
