First-principles calculations set the comprehension over performance of novel cathodoluminescence (CL) properties of BaZrO3 prepared through microwave-assisted hydrothermal. Ground (singlet, s*) and excited (singlet s** and triplet t**) electronic states were built from zirconium displacement of 0.2 Å in {001} direction. Each ground and excited states were characterized by the correlation of their corresponding geometry with electronic structures and Raman vibrational frequencies which were also identified experimentally. A kind of optical polarization switching was identified by the redistribution of 4dz2 and 4dxz (Zr) orbitals and 2pz O orbital. As a consequence, asymmetric bending and stretching modes theoretically obtained reveal a direct dependence with their polyhedral intracluster and/or extracluster ZrO6 distortions with electronic structure. Then, CL of the as-synthesized BaZrO3 can be interpreted as a result of stable triplet excited states, which are able to trap electrons, delaying the emission process due to spin multiplicity changes. © 2013 AIP Publishing LLC.

We analyze the capability of the next generation of linear electron-positron colliders to unravel the spin and couplings of excited leptons predicted by composite models. Assuming that these machines will be able to operate both in the e+e- and e-γ modes, we study the effects of the excited electrons of spin 1/2 and 3/2 in the reactions e-γ → e-γ and e+e- → γγ. We show how the use of polarized beams is able not only to increase the reach of these machines, but also to determine the spin and couplings of the excited states.

Spin coherence generation in an ensemble of negatively charged (In,Ga)As/GaAs quantum dots was investigated by picosecond time-resolved pump-probe spectroscopy measuring ellipticity. Robust coherence of the ground-state electron spins is generated by pumping excited charged exciton (trion) states. The phase of the coherent state, as evidenced by the spin ensemble precession about an external magnetic field, varies relative to spin coherence generation resonant with the ground state. The phase variation depends on the pump photon energy. It is determined by (a) pumping dominantly either singlet or triplet excited states, leading to a phase inversion, and (b) the subsequent carrier relaxation into the ground states. From the dependence of the precession phase and the measured g factors, information about the quantum dot shell splitting and the exchange energy splitting between triplet and singlet states can be extracted in the ensemble.

The photoelectron spectrum of the oxyallyl (OXA) radical anion has been measured. The radical anion has been generated in the reaction of the atomic oxygen radical anion (O center dot-) with acetone. Three low-lying electronic states of OXA have been observed in the spectrum. Electronic structure calculations have been performed for the triplet states (B-3(2) and B-3(1)) of OXA and the ground doublet state ((2)A(2)) of the radical anion using density, functional theory (DFT). Spectral simulations have been carried out for the triplet statics based on the results of the DFT calculations. The simulation identifies a vibrational progression of the CCC bending mode of the B-3(2) state of OXA in the lower electron binding energy (eBE) portion of the spectrum. On top of the B-3(2) feature, however, the experimental spectrum exhibits additional photoelectron peaks whose angular distribution is distinct from that for the vibronic peaks of the B-3(2) state. Complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF) method and second-order perturbation theory based on the CASSCF wave function (CASPT2) have been employed to study the lowest singlet state ((1)A(1)) of OXA. The simulation based on the results of these electronic structure calculations establishes that the overlapping peaks represent the vibrational ground level of the (1)A(1) state and its vibrational progression of the CO stretching mode. The A, state is the lowest electronic state of,OXA, and the electron affinity (EA) of OXA is 1.940 +/- 0.010 eV. The B-3(2) state is the first excited state with an electronic term energy of 55 +/- 2 meV. The widths of the vibronic peaks of the (X) over tilde (1)A(1) state are much broader than those of the (a) over tilde B-3(2) state, implying that the (1)A(1) state is indeed a transition state. The CASSCF and CASPT2 calculations suggest that the (1)A(1) state is at a potential maximum along the nuclear coordinate representing disrotatory motion of the two methylene groups, which leads to three-membered-ring formation, i.e., cydopropanone. The simulation of (b) over tilde B-3(1) OXA reproduces the higher eBE portion of the spectrum very well. The term energy of the B-3(1) state is 0.883 +/- 0.012 eV. Photoelectron spectroscopic measurements have also been conducted for the other ion products of the O center dot- reaction with acetone. The photoelectron imaging spectrum of the acetylcarbene (AC) radical anion exhibits a broad, structureless feature, which is assigned to the (X) over tilde (3)A '' state of AC. The ground ((2)A '') and first excited ((2)A') states of the 1-methylvinoxy (1-MVO) radical have been observed in the photoelectron spectrum of the 1-MVO ion, and their vibronic structure has been analyzed.

Approximate calculations are reported on pyrene within the PPP model Hamiltonian using a novel restricted CI scheme which employs both molecular orbital and valence bond techniques. Also reported are detailed full CI results of the PPP model on 2,7-dihydropyrene obtained using the valence bond method. Spectral studies, charge and spin density calculations in ground and excited states, and ring current calculations in the ground state of the molecules are presented. In pyrene, the calculated excitation energies are in good agreement with experiment. The closed structure pi-conjugated molecule pyrene appears to show smaller distortions from the ground state geometry compared with the open structure pi-conjugated molecule 2,7-dihydropyrene. The ground state equilibrium structure of 2,7-dihydropyrene can be viewed as two hexatriene molecules connected by a vinyl crosslink, as is evident from bond order and ring current calculations. This is consistent with the only Kekule resonant structure possible for this molecule.

The symmetrized density matrix renormalization group method is used to study linear and nonlinear optical properties of free base porphine and metalloporphine. Long-range interacting model, namely, Pariser-Parr-Pople model is employed to capture the quantum many-body effect in these systems. The nonlinear optical coefficients are computed within the correction vector method. The computed singlet and triplet low-lying excited state energies and their charge densities are in excellent agreement with experimental as well as many other theoretical results. The rearrangement of the charge density at carbon and nitrogen sites, on excitation, is discussed. From our bond order calculation, we conclude that porphine is well described by the 18-annulenic structure in the ground state and the molecule expands upon excitation. We have modeled the regular metalloporphine by taking an effective electric field due to the metal ion and computed the excitation spectrum. Metalloporphines have D(4h) symmetry and hence have more degenerate excited states. The ground state of metalloporphines shows 20-annulenic structure, as the charge on the metal ion increases. The linear polarizability seems to increase with the charge initially and then saturates. The same trend is observed in third order polarizability coefficients. We demonstrate electronic energy transfer between resonance states of 2 and 2.8 nm CdTe quantum dots in aqueous media using steady-state photoluminescence spectroscopy without using any external linker molecule. With increasing concentration of larger dots, there is subsequent quenching of luminescence in smaller dots accompanied by the enhancement of luminescence in larger dots. Our experimental evidence suggests that there is long-range resonance energy transfer among electronic excitations, specifically from the electronically confined states of the smaller dots to the higher excited states of the larger dots.

The solvent plays a decisive role in the photochemistry and photophysics of aromatic ketones. Xanthone (XT) is one such aromatic ketone and its triplet-triplet (T-T) absorption spectra show intriguing solvatochromic behavior. Also, the reactivity of XT towards H-atom abstraction shows an unprecedented decrease in protic solvents relative to aprotic solvents. Therefore, a comprehensive solvatochromic analysis of the triplet-triplet absorption spectra of XT was carried out in conjunction with time dependent density functional theory using the ad hoc explicit solvent model approach. A detailed solvatochromic analysis of the T-T absorption bands of XT suggests that the hydrogen bonding interactions are different in the corresponding triplet excited states. Furthermore, the contributions of non-specific and hydrogen bonding interactions towards differential solvation of the triplet states in protic solvents were found to be of equal magnitude. The frontier molecular orbital and electron density difference analysis of the T-1 and T-2 states of XT indicates that the charge redistribution in these states leads to intermolecular hydrogen bond strengthening and weakening, respectively, relative to the S-0 state. This is further supported by the vertical excitation energy calculations of the XT-methanol supra-molecular complex. The intermolecular hydrogen bonding potential energy curves obtained for this complex in the S-0, T-1, and T-2 states support the model. In summary, we propose that the different hydrogen bonding mechanisms exhibited by the two lowest triplet excited states of XT result in a decreasing role of the n pi* triplet state, and are thus responsible for its reduced reactivity towards H-atom abstraction in protic solvents. We report on the upconversion luminescence of a pure YVO4 single crystal excited by an infrared femtosecond laser. The luminescent spectra show that the upconversion luminescence comes from the transitions from the lowest excited states T-3(1), T-3(2) to the ground state (1)A(1) of the VO43-. The dependence of the fluorescence intensity on the pump power density of laser indicates that the conversion of infrared irradiation to visible emission is dominated by three-photon excitation process. We suggest that the simultaneous absorption of three infrared photons promotes the VO43- to excited states, which quickly cascade down to lowest excited states, and radiatively relax to ground states, resulting in the broad characteristic fluorescence of VO43-. Within the framework of second-order Rayleigh-Schrodinger perturbation theory, the polaronic correction to the first excited state energy of an electron in an quantum dot with anisotropic parabolic confinements is presented. Compared with isotropic confinements, anisotropic confinements will make the degeneracy of the excited states to be totally or partly lifted. On the basis of a three-dimensional Frohlich's Hamiltonian with anisotropic confinements, the first excited state properties in two-dimensional quantum dots as well as quantum wells and wires can also be easily obtained by taking special limits. Calculations show that the first excited polaronic effect can be considerable in small quantum dots.

We have investigated the dispersive properties of excited-doublet four-level atoms interacting with a weak probe field and an intense coupling laser field. We have derived an analytical expression of the dispersion relation for a general excited-doublet four-level atomic system subject to a one-photon detuning. The numerical results demonstrate that for a typical rubidium D1 line configuration, due to the unequal dipole moments for the transitions of each ground state to double excited states, generally there exists no exact dark state in the system. Close to the two-photon resonance, the probe light can be absorbed orgained and propagate in the so-called superluminal form. This system may be used as an optical switch.

An automatic experimental apparatus for perturbed angular correlation measurements, capable of incorporating Ge(Li) detectors as well as scintillation counters, has been constructed.

The gamma-gamma perturbed angular correlation technique has been used to measure magnetic dipole moments of several nuclear excited states in the osmium transition region. In addition, the hyperfine magnetic fields, experienced by nuclei of 'impurity' atoms embedded in ferromagnetic host lattices, have been determined for several '4d' and '5d' impurity atoms.

The following magnetic dipole moments were obtained in the osmium transition region μ2+(190Os) = 0.54 ± 0.06 nm μ4+(190Os) = 0.88 ± 0.48 nm μ2+(192Os) = 0.56 ± 0.08 nm μ2+(192Pt) = 0.56 ± 0.06 nm μ2+’(192Pt) = 0.62 ± 0.14 nm.

These results are discussed in terms of three collective nuclear models; the cranking model, the rotation-vibration model and the pairing-plus-quadrupole model. The measurements are found to be in satisfactory agreement with collective descriptions of low lying nuclear states in this region.

The following hyperfine magnetic fields of 'impurities' in ferromagnetic hosts were determined; Hint(Cd Ni) = - (64.0 ± 0.8)kG Hint(Hg Fe) = - (440 ± 105)kG Hint(Hg Co) = - (370 ± 78)kG Hint(Hg Ni) = - (86 ± 22)kG Hint(Tl Fe) = - (185 ± 70)kG Hint(Tl Co) = - (90 ± 35)kG Hint(Ra Fe) = - (105 ± 20)kG Hint(Ra Co) = - (80 ± 16)kG Hint(Ra Ni) = - (30 ± 10)kG, where in Hint(AB); A is the impurity atom embedded in the host lattice B. No quantitative theory is available for comparison. However, these results are found to obey the general systematics displayed by these fields. Several mechanisms which may be responsible for the appearance of these fields are mentioned.

Finally, a theoretical expression for time-differential perturbed angular correlation measurement, which duplicates experimental conditions is developed and its importance in data analysis is discussed.

The two lowest T = 3/2 levels in 21Na have been studied in the 19F(3He, n), 20Ne (p,p) and 20Ne (p,p’) reactions, and their excitation energies, spins, parities and widths have been determined. In a separate investigation, branching ratios were measured for the isospin-nonconserving particle decays of the lowest T = 3/2 levels in 17O and 17F to the ground state and first two excited states of 16O, by studying the 15N(3He,n) 17F*(p) 16O and 18O(3He, α)17O*(n) 16O reactions.

The 19F(3He,n) 21Na reaction was studied at incident energies between 4.2 and 5.9 MeV using a pulsed-beam neutron-time-of-flight spectrometer. Two T = 3/2 levels were identified at excitation energies of 8.99 ± 0.05 MeV (J > ½) and 9.22 ± 0.015 MeV (J π = ½+, Γ ˂ 40 keV). The spins and parities were determined by a comparison of the measured angular distributions with the results of DWBA calculations.

These two levels were also obsesrved as isospin-forbidden resonances in the 20Ne(p,p) and 20Ne(p,p’) reactions. Excitation energies were measured and spins, parities, and widths were determined from a single level dispersion theory analysis. The following results were obtained:

Ex = 8.973 ± 0.007 MeV, J π = 5/2 + or 3/2+, Γ ≤ 1.2 keV,

Γpo = 0.1 ± 0.05 keV; Ex = 9.217 ± 0.007 MeV, Jπ = ½ +,

Γ = 2.3 ± 0.5 keV, Γpo = 1.1 ± 0.3 keV.

Isospin assignments were made on the basis of excitation energies, spins, parities, and widths.

Branching ratios for the isospin-nonconserving proton decays of the 11.20 MeV, T = 3/2 level in 17F were measured by the 15N(3He,n) 17 F*(p) 16O reaction to be 0.088 ± 0.016 to the ground state of 16O and 0.22 ± 0.04 to the unresolved 6.05 and 6.13 MeV levels of 16O. Branching ratios for the neutron decays of the analogous T = 3/2 level, at 11.08 MeV in 17O, were measured by the 16O(3He, α)17O*(n)16O reaction to be 0.91 ± 0.15 to the ground state of 16O and 0.05 ± 0.02 to the unresolved 6.05 and 6.13 MeV states. By comparing the ratios of reduced widths for the mirror decays, the form of the isospin impurity in the T = 3/2 levels is shown to depend on Tz.

We consider the electron-hole pair confined in a simplified infinite potential. The low-lying excition states in a ZnO cylindrical nanodisk are calculated based on effective-mass theory. To further understand the optical properties, we calculate the linear optical susceptibilities chi(w) and the radiative recombination lifetime tau of excitons in a ZnO nanodisk. The exciton radiative lifetime in a cylindrical nanodisk is of the order of tens of picoseconds, which is small compared with the lifetime of bulk ZnO material. We propose a method for uniformly calculating the electronic states of a hydrogenic donor impurity in low-dimensional semiconductor nano-structures in the framework of effective-mass envelope-function theory, and we study the electronic structures of this systems. Compared to previous methods, our method has the following merits: (a) It can be widely applied in the calculation of the electronic states of hydrogenic donor impurities in nano-structures of various shapes; (b) It can easily be extended to study the effects of external fields and other complex cases; (c) The excited states are more easily calculated than with the variational method; (d) It is convenient to calculate the change of the electronic states with the position of a hydrogenic donor impurity in nano-structures; (e) The binding energy can be calculated explicitly.
