The mode I and mode II fracture properties of the FM300-2 adhesive bond between 5HS/RTM6 laminates are determined experimentally by DCB and ELS test. The crack propagation is studied numerically by means of interface elements based on the decohesive zone model. The latter is characterized by material degradation, which is usually assumed to be linear. In the present study it is shown that if a non-linear material degradation is used with an increased magnitude of the interface relative displacement at failure it is possible to model more correctly the experimentally observed significant non-linear behaviour before the start of crack propagation. An adhesive stepped flush joint is studied experimentally and numerically. A mixed mode interaction criterion is used together with the nonlinear material degradation of the interface. Sensitivity studies are performed to study the influence of the parameters defining it.

This paper presents an experimental and numerical study focused on the tensile fibre fracture toughness characterisation of hybrid plain weave composite laminates using non-standardized Overheight Compact Tension (OCT) specimens. The position as well as the strain field ahead of the crack tip in the specimens was determined using a digital speckle photogrammetry system. The limitation on the applicability of standard data reduction schemes for the determination of the intralaminar fibre fracture toughness of composites is presented and discussed. A methodology based on the numerical evaluation of the strain energy release rate using the J-integral method is proposed to derive new geometric correction functions for the determination of stress intensity factor for alternative composite specimen geometries. A comparison between different methods currently available to compute the intralaminar fracture toughness in composites is also presented and discussed. Good agreement between numerical and experimental results using the proposed methodology was obtained.

A three-dimensional continuum damage mechanics-based material model has been implemented in an implicit Finite Element code to simulate the progressive degradation of advanced composite materials. The damage model uses seven damage variables assigned to tensile, compressive and non-linear shear damage at a laminae level. The objectivity of the numerical discretization is assured using a smeared formulation. The material model was benchmarked against experimental uniaxial coupon tests and it is shown to reproduce key aspects observable during failure, such as the inclined fracture plane in matrix compression and the shear band in a ±45° tension specimen.

The design of current composite primary aerostructures, such as fuselage or wing stiffened panels, tends to be conservative due to the susceptibility of the relatively weak skin-stiffener interface. This weakness is due to through-thickness stresses which are exacerbated by deformations due to buckling. This paper presents a finite-elementbased optimization strategy, utilizing a global-local modelling approach, for postbuckling stiffened panels which takes into account damage mechanisms which may lead to delamination and subsequent failure of the panel due to stiffener debonding. A genetic algorithm was linked to a finite element package to automate the iterative procedure and maximize the damage resistance of the panel in postbuckling. For a given loading condition, the procedure optimized the panel’s skin layup leading to a design displaying superior damage resistance compared to non-optimized designs

Significant reduction of inherent large divergence of the laser driven MeV proton beams is achieved by strong (of the order of 10^9 V/m ) electrostatic focussing field generated in the confined region of a suitably shaped structure attached to the proton generating foil. The scheme exploits the positively charging of the target following an intense laser interaction. Reduction in the proton beam divergence, and commensurate increase in proton flux is observed while preserving the beam laminarity. The underlying mechanism has been established by the help of particle tracing simulations. Dynamic focussing power of the lens, mainly due to the target discharging, can also be exploited in order to bring up the desired chromaticity of the lens for the proton beams of broad energy range.

Scheduling jobs with deadlines, each of which defines the latest time that a job must be completed, can be challenging on the cloud due to incurred costs and unpredictable performance. This problem is further complicated when there is not enough information to effectively schedule a job such that its deadline is satisfied, and the cost is minimised. In this paper, we present an approach to schedule jobs, whose performance are unknown before execution, with deadlines on the cloud. By performing a sampling phase to collect the necessary information about those jobs, our approach delivers the scheduling decision within 10% cost and 16% violation rate when compared to the ideal setting, which has complete knowledge about each of the jobs from the beginning. It is noted that our proposed algorithm outperforms existing approaches, which use a fixed amount of resources by reducing the violation cost by at least two times.

Dual Carrier Modulation (DCM) is currently used as the higher data rate modulation scheme for Multiband Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (MB-OFDM) in the ECMA-368 defined Ultra-Wideband (UWB) radio platform. ECMA-368 has been chosen as the physical radio platform for many systems including Wireless USB (W-USB), Bluetooth 3.0 and Wireless HDMI; hence ECMA-368 is an important issue to consumer electronics and the user’s experience of these products. In this paper, Log Likelihood Ratio (LLR) demapping method is used for the DCM demaper implemented in fixed point model. Channel State Information (CSI) aided scheme coupled with the band hopping information is used as the further technique to improve the DCM demapping performance. The receiver performance for the fixed point DCM is simulated in realistic multi-path environments.

In over forty years of research robots have made very little progress still largely confined to industrial manufacture and cute toys, yet in the same period computing has followed Moores Law where the capacity double roughly every two years. So why is there no Moores Law for robots? Two areas stand out as worthy of research to speedup progress. The first is to get a greater understanding of how human and animal brains control movement, the second to build a new generation of robots that have greater haptic sense, that is a better ability to adapt to the environment as it is encountered. A remarkable property of the cognitive-motor system in humans and animals is that it is slow. Recognising an object may take 250 mS, a reaction time of 150 mS is considered fast. Yet despite this slow system we are well designed to allow contact with the world in a variety of ways. We can anticipate an encounter, use the change of force as a means of communication and ignore sensory cues when they are not relevant. A better understanding of these process has allowed us to build haptic interfaces to mimic the interaction. Emerging from this understanding are new ways to control the contact between robots, the user and the environment. Rehabilitation robotics has all the elements in the subject to not only enable and change the lives of people with disabilities, but also to facilitate revolution change in classic robotics.

This paper reports preliminary results of a reach and grasp study of robot mediated neurorehabilitation. These results are presented on a case-by-case basis and give a good indication of a positive effect of robot mediated therapy. The study investigated both reach and grasp assistance and although it is not possible to attribute the response to the benefits of providing assistance of both modalities the study is a good indicator that this strategy should be pursued. The paper also reports on the benefits of motivational queues such as exercise scores and on subject attitudes to the robot mediated therapy.

In diplopods, the presence of calcium-containing structures seems to be a common finding in some species, with its formation being similar to that observed for other intracellular mineralization systems. In the present study, using histochemistry and transmission electron microscopy, a large amount of calcium was observed in the oocytes of Rhinocricus padbergi. Calcium was detected in both less and well developed oocytes, i.e., the occurrence of calcium coincided with the beginning of vitellogenesis. Calcium was observed as fine granulation distributed within the cytoplasm or deposited in spherical structures apparently formed by overlapping calcium layers. Some authors have suggested that these structures represent a type of reserve used for the calcification of the embryo exoskeleton, whereas others believe that calcium inclusions are a mechanism of organism detoxification as a result of excess calcium ingested by animals during soil turnover. We suggest in this paper that the first hypothesis could be occurring in R. padbergi since at the juvenile stages of the individuals the uptake of calcium is low and because the oocyte is a specialized cell not associated with detoxification.

Dufour glands of Apis mellifera and Melipona bicolor were studied under light and transmission electron microscopy, using the cytochemical techniques of mercury bromophenol blue for protein detection, imidazole-buffered osmium tetroxide selective staining of unsaturated lipids, lanthanum nitrate for intercellular junction identification and zinc-iodide-osmium tetroxide for cytoplasmic endomembrane visualization. The results in both species corroborated the lipid nature of the gland secretion and showed in A. mellifera the poverty of the synthetic machinery in the worker gland cells in comparison with the queen, as expected by previous biochemical analyses. The pathway of the exogenous compounds of the secretion is intracellular, since substances can penetrate the cell folds and intercellular junctions, but their access to the, gland lumen is barred by the apical intercellular junctions.

Cytochemistry studies of the nuclei of the venom glands' cells of worker bees of Apis mellifera indicated that there is a higher activity in the young workers while there is a predominance of degenerative characteristics in the older workers. In addition, we demonstrated that there is an occurrence of differential nuclear synthetic activities between the cells of the distal and the proximal regions of the secretory filament and of the venom reservoir. Signs of a higher nuclear activity were evidenced at the distal regions of this gland in 14-day old workers, while at the more proximal regions of the venom gland of 40-day old workers we identified the most obvious signs of degeneration. Therefore, it was evident that the process of glandular degeneration begins at the distal region of the venom gland instead of beginning at the proximal region as had been established previously. In addition, characteristics of nuclear synthetic activities were noted in the cells of the proximal region of the reservoir; these cells were thought to be non-secretory.

The pattern of availability of free DNA phosphates, and the kind of DNA-protein complex arrangement, both induced by nuclear basic proteins, and the richness in arginine residues in these proteins were investigated cytochemically and cytophysically in spermatozoa of the South-American Hylidae species, Hyla fuscovaria and Hyla biobeba. The aim was to demonstrate differences at the level of sperm histones in two species of Hyla until recently considered to be congeneric. The results indicated differences in the spermatozoal nuclear basic proteins and DNA-protein complexes when the two species were compared. The spermatozoa of Hyla biobeba were assumed to be likely to contain a Bloch's ''type 3'' protein type (intermediate sperm basic protein), similarly to Hyla species of North and Central America. on the other hand, the data obtained for the spermatozoa of Hyla fuscovaria indicated that they contain a protamine or protamine-like protein, differing from Hyla biobeba and Hyla species of North and Central America. It is suggested that the differences reported here may be genus-specific, since Hyla fuscovaria has recently been reclassified as Scinax fuscovaria based on parameters other than sperm histone types. These findings are in agreement with the general view of a wide variability in sperm nuclear proteins in the Anura group.
