An adequate supply of nitrogen is essential for high yield of common bean seeds; however, the responses to this nutrient in no-tillage systems can vary in function of the species and the amount of straw present. The aim of this research was to evaluate response of the common bean to N in no-tillage systems over maize, millet and Brachiaria brizantha crop residues. Three experiments were conducted, one for each gramineous species. The experimental design was a randomized block in a 5x2x2 factorial scheme, with five N doses (0, 30, 60, 90, 120 kg ha(-1)), in two distinct stadia during the vegetative development (3(rd) and 6(th) trifoliate leaf) and two common bean cultivars (IPR Juriti and Perola), with four replications. The IPR Juriti produced a greater number of pods per plant and showed lower mass per 100 seeds than Perola. It did not show variation in bean yield when the sidedressing N application was carried out in the 3(rd) or 6(th) trifoliate leaf stadia. Based on the obtained results, one concludes that the seed productivity of common beans increases linearly with N doses in a no-tillage system over maize residues.

The green corn demand, production of quality bean grain and better use of land and water resources can be used by small farmers through the intercropping of common bean and green corn in off-season crops. Field experiments were conducted in the Polo Regional Extremo Oeste-APTA, in Andradina -São Paulo State, in 2005 and 2006. The objective was to evaluate the performance of green corn cultivars grown in single crop and intercropped with common bean. The randomized blocks design with 8 treatments constituted by the combination of two corn (CATIVERDE 02 and XB 7012) and three common bean cultivars of different growth habits: IPR Colibri (I), IPR Juriti (II) and IAC Carioca (III), with four repetitions was used. The influence of the intercropping on the performance of corn was not significant. The hybrid XB 7012 was more productive in intercropping and in single crop. The hybrid production more 8000 commercials ears and lengt ears when compared with the variety. The intercropping with the IPR Juriti or IPR Colibri cultivars were the most profitable for the producer.

The growth of the rat parotid gland induced by daily treatment with isoproterenol (IPR) for 2 weeks was investigated by stereological methods applied to light microscopy. After 7 days of treatment, the glandular mass presented a 286% growth, with the first 3 days being the period of greatest growth. Total acinar volume exhibited a 363% increase during the period from 0 to 7 days, while acinar-cell volume presented a 468% growth from 0 to 5 days of treatment. on the other hand, total acinar-cell number did not increase during the study period. Thus, under the conditions used, IPR-stimulated gland growth wits essentially hypertrophic. However, a significant increase in the number of bipolar and multipolar mitoses was also observed, especially on the third and fifth days of treatment. As no increase in acinar-cell number occurred during growth, the presence of these mitoses suggests that cell death occurred during gland growth. on this basis, bipolar mitoses may occur to replace cells that probably degenerated during treatment, whereas multipolar mitoses may lead to the occurrence of polyploidy. Nitrogen limitation in the common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) produces reduced productivity and seeds with low protein content and physiological quality. We assessed the effects of nitrogen fertilizer side dressing on the protein content and physiological quality of the seeds of P. vulgaris L. cultivars (cv.) IPR Juriti and Pérola grown in plots (soil type = Dystrophic Red Latosol) using a no-tillage system under a thick mulch of millet residues at the Experimental Station of UNESP-Ilha Solteira campus, located in Selvíria, MS (Köppen climate type = Aw) during autumn (March/June) and winter (June/September) 2005. For each cultivar, a randomized block experimental design was used with four replicates and factorially arranged treatments equivalent to 0, 30, 60, 90 and 120 kg.ha-1 added nitrogen (as urea, containing 45% of N) applied as a side dressing during the V4-3 and V4-6 phenological stage corresponding to the 3rd and 6th completely opened trifoliolate leaf on the main stem. Supplementation with up to 120 kg.ha-1 nitrogen promoted a greater increase in crude protein at V4-3 (unsupplemented = 17.6% and 16.3%; 120 kg.ha-1 N = 24.1% and 22.3% for cv. IPR Juriti and Pérola, respectively) than at V4-6 (unsupplemented = 19.2% and 18.3%; 120 kg.ha-1 N = 21.3% and 20.3% for cv. IPR Juriti and Pérola, respectively). About 90% of the crude protein from cv. IPR Juriti was composed of soluble protein compared to 72% for the cv. Pérola. Albumins and globulins represented about 80% of the soluble protein and prolamins were lower at 0.6%. In conclusion, nitrogen fertilization up to 120 kg.ha-1 applied as a side dressing at the V4-3 phenological stage in no-tillage under a thick mulch of millet promoted a greater increase of crude protein in common bean seeds than at the V4-6 stage. The highest accumulation of soluble protein occurred at 90 kg.ha-1 applied nitrogen without having a significant influence on the physiological quality of the seeds.

Common bean is an important crop in Brazil primarily because of its nutritional characteristics. Some agronomic practices, such as weed management, are fundamental to cultivation, as a means of obtaining a high crop yield. However, some studies have shown that weed management may alter the function of the cultivar cycle. Thus, this study aimed at determining the optimal phenological stage in early-maturing common bean cultivars to perform the weed control without providing reductions in yield and seed quality. The experimental design was randomized blocks with 20 treatments and four replications, in a 2×2×5 (cultivars × types of weed control × periods of weed control) factorial scheme. The periods of weed control for both cultivars (Carioca Precoce and IPR-Colibri) consisted of full cycle weeded (control), weed control at the V4-3 stage (first three nodes on the main stem with trifoliate leaves), at the R5 stage (beginning of bloom) and at the R8 stage (appearance of pods) and full cycle unweeded (no weed control). The types of weed control used were chemical (fluazifop-p-butyl + fomesafen) and mechanical (hoe). The Carioca Precoce cultivar demonstrated higher agronomic performance and yield than the IPR-Colibri cultivar, although the IPR-Colibri seeds had a higher vigor. The type of weed control (chemical or mechanical) did not affect the agronomic characteristics, yield and seed physiological potential of the cultivars. The ideal period for weed control in early-maturing common bean cultivars to obtain a higher yield and seed physiological potential was observed at the V4-3 phenological stage.

Germination parameters of the response to temperature and water potential from four common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) lines based on thermal-time and hydrotime concepts were estimated to verify to what extent they can predict germination under different thermal and water conditions. The cultivars IPR Uirapuru and IAPAR 81 (drought-tolerant), and Grauna and Carioca (not tolerant) were used. The isothermal assays were performed in a temperature gradient block, and the assays with different osmotic potentials (PEG 6000) were performed in germination chambers. Seeds from drought-tolerant cultivars spent less time to germinate at supra-optimum temperatures than non-tolerant ones, and the cultivar Uirapuru (drought-tolerant) germinated faster in response to reduced Ψ and low temperatures. The parameter Ψb(50) did not discriminate between drought-tolerant and non-tolerant lines at the infraoptimum temperature range, but it can be used to identify drought-tolerant lines at high temperatures. In general, the hydrotime model reproduced the actual germination data relatively well, chiefly at higher temperatures. This study evidenced that the hydrotime model can be used to describe the germination of common bean seeds under reduced water potentials, and as a screening tool for drought-tolerant bean genotypes.

In this study, the short- and long-range chemical environments of Cu dopant in TiO2 photocatalyst have been investigated. The Cu-doped and undoped TiO2 specimens were prepared by the sol-gel approach employing CuSO4·5H2O and Ti(O-iPr)4 precursors and subjecting the dried gels to thermal treatment at 400 and 500 C. The photocatalytic activity, investigated by methylene blue degradation under sunlight irradiation, showed a significantly higher efficiency of Cu-doped samples than that of pure TiO2. The X-ray diffraction results showed the presence of anatase phase for samples prepared at 400 and 500 C. No crystalline CuSO4 phase was detected below 500 C. It was also found that doping decreases the crystallite size in the (004) and (101) directions. Infrared spectroscopy results indicated that the chemical environment of sulfate changes as a function of thermal treatment, and UV-vis spectra showed that the band gap decreases with thermal treatment and Cu doping, showing the lowest value for the 400 C sample. X-ray absorption fine structure measurements and analysis refinements revealed that even after thermal treatment and photocatalytic assays, the Cu2+ local order is similar to that of CuSO4, containing, however, oxygen vacancies. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy data, limited to the near surface region of the catalyst, evidenced, besides CuSO4, the presence of Cu1+ and CuO phases, indicating the active role of Cu in the TiO2 lattice. © 2013 Springer Science+Business Media New York.
