Composites of a lithium ion conducting ceramic with a lithium salt based polymer electrolyte matrix are described. Conductivity measurements as a function of the lithium ion conducting ceramic phase content in the composite show that there is a significant increase in conductivity at approximately 40 vol% of the ceramic. The room temperature conductivity above this ceramic content is enhanced by at least 100% over that of the polymer electrolyte phase alone. It is believed that this additional contribution is substantially lithium ion conduction. The major barrier to ion-motion in these materials appears to be the interface between the polymer and ceramic. This interfacial resistance is strongly moisture-sensitive.

7Li solid state NMR has been used to characterize lithium aluminium titanium phosphate and lithium lanthanum titanate ceramics. Both materials have high ionic mobilities at room temperature and this is reflected in their static 7Li powder patterns. In the case of the phosphate based ceramic, a narrow Lorentzian peak is observed above 300 K, which narrows further with increasing temperature. The accompanying quadrupolar structure, with CQ (quadrupolar coupling constant) ~ 40 kHz, suggests that the lithium ions are hopping rapidly between equivalent, high electric field gradient sites. The 27Al and 31P magic angle spinning (MAS) spectra reveal an asymmetric phosphorus peak and two distinct aluminium resonances. The room temperature powder pattern of Li0.33La0.57TiO3 shows a dipolar broadened peak which narrows quite suddenly at 310 K revealing quadrupolar satellites with CQ ~ 900 Hz. A second lithium site is also observed in this material, as indicated by a further, weaker quadrupolar structure (CQ ~ 40 kHz).

Electrochemical synthesis of inherently conducting polymers such as polypyrrole is traditionally performed in a molecular solvent/electrolyte system such acetonitrile/lithium perchlorate. We report the use of ionic liquids 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl) amide and N,N-butylmethylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl) amide, both as the growth medium and as an electrolyte for the electrochemical cycling of polypyrrole films. Use of the ionic liquid as the growth medium results in significantly altered film morphologies and improved electrochemical activities.

In order to achieve high conductivity in a polymer electrolyte, polymer-in-ionic-liquid electrolytes have been explored. It is found in this study that poly[vinylpyrrolidone-co-(vinyl acetate)] (P(VP-c-VA)) in 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethyl sulfonyl) amide (EtMeIm+Tf2N−) and poly(N,N-dimethyl acrylamide) (PDMAA) in trimethyl butyl ammonium bis(trifluoromethane sulfonyl) amide (N1114+Tf2N−) produce ion-conducting liquids and gels. The P(VP-c-VA)/ EtMeIm+Tf2N− mixture has a conductivity around 10−3 S · cm−1 at 22 °C, for copolymer concentrations up to 30 wt.-%. Thermal analysis shows that the Tg of the P(VP-c-VA)/ EtMeIm+Tf2N− system is well described by the Fox equation as a function of polymer content. Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)/ EtMeIm+Tf2N− gel electrolytes were prepared by in-situ polymerisation of the monomer in the ionic liquid. In the presence of 0.5–2.0 wt.-% of a crosslinking agent, these PMMA-based electrolytes displayed elastomeric properties and high conductivity (ca. 10−3 S · cm−1) at room temperature.

Conducting polymer based electrochromic devices were assembled with various ionic liquid (IL) based electrolytes to probe the role of the ion structure on electrochromic performance. When the IL contained the same anion as the dopant ion used in the conducting polymers an enhanced electrochromic performance was observed providing high photopic contrast at low applied potential.

Ionic liquids (ILs) represent a fascinating, and yet to be fully understood, medium for a variety of chemical, physical and biological processes. Electrochemical processes form an important subset of these that are particularly of interest, since ILs tend to be good electrochemical solvents and exhibit other properties which make them very useful as electrolytes in electrochemical devices. It is important therefore to understand the extent to which electrochemical reactions and processes behave in a relatively “normal”, for example aqueous solution, fashion as opposed to exhibiting phenomena more uniquely the product of their organic ionic nature. This perspective examines a range of electrochemical reactions in ionic liquids, in many cases in the context of real world applications, to highlight the phenomena as far as they are understood and where data gaps exist. The important areas of lithium and conducting polymer electrochemistry are discussed in detail.

Hollow fibre membranes of mixed conducting perovskite La0.6Sr0.4Co0.2Fe0.8O3 (LSCF) were prepared via the combined phase inversion and sintering technique. The fibres were tested for air separation with a home-made reactor under the oxygen partial pressure gradient generated by the air/He streams. Some fibres were in situ activated by introducing methane in the He sweeping gas at high temperatures. The activated membranes with new morphology were created by transforming the inner densified surface layer to a porous structure. Compared to the original membranes, the activated gave appreciable higher oxygen fluxes. At 800 °C, the oxygen fluxes were increased by a factor of 10 after activation was carried out at 1000 °C for 1 h.

Here we report the production of novel high performance BaBi0.05Sc0.1Co0.85O3-3 (BaBiScCo) hollow fibres delivering oxygen fluxes of 11.4 ml cm-2 min-1 at 950 °C. The doping of bismuth, a highly ionic conductor, at the B-site of a barium based perovskite overcame oxygen ionic transport limitations even at temperatures as low as 600 °C.

A polyterthiophene (PTTh)/multi-walled carbon nanotube (CNT) composite was synthesised by in situ chemical polymerisation and used as an active cathode material in lithium cells assembled with an ionic liquid (IL) or conventional liquid electrolyte, LiBF4/EC–DMC–DEC. The IL electrolyte consisted of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (EMIBF4) containing LiBF4 and a small amount of vinylene carbonate (VC). The lithium cells were characterised by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and galvanostatic charge/discharge cycling. The specific capacity of the cells with IL and conventional liquid electrolytes after the 1st cycle was 50 and 47 mAh g−1 (based on PTTh weight), respectively at the C/5 rate. The capacity retention after the 100th cycle was 78% and 53%, respectively. The lithium cell assembled with a PTTh/CNT composite cathode and a non-flammable IL electrolyte exhibited a mean discharge voltage of 3.8 V vs Li+/Li and is a promising candidate for high-voltage power sources with enhanced safety.

Small-molecule nonvolatile additives based on ionic liquids (IL) as electrical conductivity enhancer in Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) was studied. Ionic liquids were investigated in the synthesis of self-assembled, highly organized hybrid nanostructures due to their ability as supramolecular solvents. Different percentage of five ionic liquids, such as 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (bmim) F 4 and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide (bmim)Br were added to a PEDOT:PSScommercial dispersion. Films of pure PEDOT:PSS showed an average conductivity of 14 S cm-1, which corresponded to the value range given by the supplier. AFM images showed that IL induced the formation of a three-dimensional conducting network with smaller PEDOT domains. The ionic character of the films was significantly increased because of the presence of ionic liquids, which can be used effectively in optoelectronic devices.
