We have measured the azimuthal anisotropy of pi(0) production for 1 < p(T) < 18 GeV/c for Au + Au collisions at root s(NN) = 200 GeV. The observed anisotropy shows a gradual decrease for 3 less than or similar to p(T) less than or similar to 7-10 GeV/c, but remains positive beyond 10 GeV/c. The magnitude of this anisotropy is underpredicted, up to at least similar to 10 GeV/c, by current perturbative QCD (PQCD) energy-loss model calculations. An estimate of the increase in anisotropy expected from initial-geometry modification due to gluon saturation effects and fluctuations is insufficient to account for this discrepancy. Calculations that implement a path-length dependence steeper than what is implied by current PQCD energy-loss models show reasonable agreement with the data.

The production of e(+)e(-) pairs for m(e+e-) < 0.3 GeV/c(2) and 1< p(T) < 5 GeV/c is measured in p + p and Au + Au collisions at root s(NN) = 200 GeV. An enhanced yield above hadronic sources is observed. Treating the excess as photon internal conversions, the invariant yield of direct photons is deduced. In central Au + Au collisions, the excess of the direct photon yield over p + p is exponential in transverse momentum, with an inverse slope T = 221 +/- 19(stat) +/- 19(syst) MeV. Hydrodynamical models with initial temperatures ranging from T(init) similar to 300-600 MeV at times of similar to 0.6-0.15 fm/c after the collision are in qualitative agreement with the data. Lattice QCD predicts a phase transition to quark gluon plasma at similar to 170 MeV.

We show effects of the event-by-event fluctuation of the initial conditions (IC) in hydrodynamic description of high-energy nuclear collisions on some observables. Such IC produce not only fluctuations in observables but, due to their bumpy structure, several non-trivial effects appear. They enhance production of isotropically distributed high-p(T) particles, making upsilon(2) smaller there. Also, they reduce upsilon(2) in the forward and backward regions where the global matter density is smaller, so where such effects become more efficacious. They may also produce the so-called ridge effect in the two large-p(T) particle correlation.

We show the effects of the granular structure of the initial conditions of a hydrodynamic description of high-energy nucleus-nucleus collisions on some observables, especially on the elliptic-flow parameter upsilon(2). Such a structure enhances production of isotropically distributed high-p(T) particles, making upsilon(2) smaller there. Also, it reduces upsilon(2) in the forward and backward regions where the global matter density is smaller and, therefore, where such effects become more efficacious.

Voltage-gated sodium channels have been implicated in acute and chronic neuropathic pain. Among subtypes, Nav1.7 single mutations can cause congenital indifference to pain or chronic neuropathic pain syndromes, including paroxysmal ones. This channel is co-expressed with Nav1.8, which sustains the initial action potential; Nav1.3 is an embrionary channel which is expressed in neurons after injury, as in neuropathic conditions. Few studies are focused on the expression of these molecules in human tissues having chronic pain. Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is an idiopathic paroxysmal pain treated with sodium channel blockers. The aim of this study was to investigate the expression of Nav1.3, Nav1.7 and Nav1.8 by RT-PCR in patients with TN, compared to controls. The gingival tissue was removed from the correspondent trigeminal area affected. We found that Nav1.7 was downregulated in TN (P=0.017) and Nav1.3 was upregulated in these patients (P=0.043). We propose a physiopathological mechanism for these findings. Besides vascular compression of TN, this disease might be also a channelopathy. (C) 2009 IBRO. Published by Elsevier Ltd. The effects of initial xylose concentration and nutritional supplementation of brewer`s spent grain hydrolysate on xylitol production by Candida guilliermondii were evaluated using experimental design methodology. The hydrolysate containing 55, 75 or 95 g/l xylose, supplemented or not with nutrients (calcium chloride, ammonium sulfate and rice bran extract), was used as fermentation medium. The increase in xylitol yield and productivity was related to the increase of initial xylose concentration, but up to a certain limit. above of which the yeast performance was not improved. The hydrolysate supplementation with nutrients did not interfere with xylose-to-xylitol conversion. By using the statistic tool the best conditions for maximum xylitol production were found. which consisted in using the non-supplemented hydrolysate containing 70 g/l initial xylose concentration. Under these conditions, a xylitol yield of 0.78 g/g and productivity of 0.58 g/(l h) were achieved. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Chemithermomechanical (CTM) processing was used to pretreat sugarcane bagasse with the aim of increasing cell wall accessibility to hydrolytic enzymes. Yields of the pretreated samples were in the range of 75-94%. Disk refining and alkaline-CTM and alkaline/sulfite-CTM pretreatments yielded pretreated materials with 21.7, 17.8, and 15.3% of lignin, respectively. Hemicellulose content was also decreased to some extent. Fibers of the pretreated materials presented some external fibrillation, fiber curling, increased swelling, and high water retention capacity. Cellulose conversion of the alkaline-CTM- and alkaline/sulfite-CTM-pretreated samples reached 50 and 85%, respectively, after 96 h of enzymatic hydrolysis. Two samples with low initial lignin content were also evaluated after the mildest alkaline-CTM pretreatment. One sample was a partially delignified mill-processed bagasse. The other was a sugarcane hybrid selected in a breeding program. Samples with lower initial lignin content were hydrolyzed considerably faster in the first 24 h of enzymatic digestion. For example, enzymatic hydrolysis of the sample with the lowest initial lignin content (14.2%) reached 64% cellulose conversion after only 24 h of hydrolysis when compared with the 30% observed for the mill-processed bagasse containing an initial lignin content of 24.4%. Rice straw hemicellulosic hydrolysate was used as fermentation medium for ethanol production by Pichia stipitis NRRL Y-7124. Shaking bath experiments were initially performed aiming to establish the best initial xylose concentration to be used in this bioconversion process. In the sequence, assays were carried out under different agitation (100 to 200 rpm) and aeration ((V) under bar (flask)/V(medium) ratio varying from 2.5 to 5.0) conditions, and the influence of these variables on the fermentative parameters values (ethanol yield factor, Y(P/S); cell yield factor, Y(X/S); and ethanol volumetric productivity, Q(P)) was investigated through a 2(2) full-factorial design. Initial xylose concentration of about 50 g/l was the most suitable for the development of this process, since the yeast was able to convert substrate in product with high efficiency. The factorial design assays showed a strong influence of both process variables in all the evaluated responses. The agitation and aeration increase caused a deviation in the yeast metabolism from ethanol to biomass production. The best results (Y(P/S) = 0.37 g/g and Q(P) = 0.39 g/l. h) were found when the lowest aeration (2.5 V(flask)/V(medium) ratio) and highest agitation (200 rpm) levels were employed. Under this condition, a process efficiency of 72.5% was achieved. These results demonstrated that the establishment of adequate conditions of aeration is of great relevance to improve the ethanol production from xylose by Pichia stipitis, using rice straw hemicellulosic hydrolysate as fermentation medium.

Bittar CK, Cliquet A Jr, dos Santos Floter M: Utility of quantitative ultrasound of the calcaneus in diagnosing osteoporosis in spinal cord injury patients. Am J Phys Med Rehabil 2011;90:477-481. Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the utility of quantitative ultrasound of the calcaneus in diagnosing osteoporosis in spinal cord injury patients in a Brazilian Teaching Hospital. Design: This is a diagnostic test criterion standard comparison study. Between January 2008 and October 2009, the bone density of 15 spinal cord injury patients was assessed for analysis before beginning rehabilitation using muscle stimulation. The bone density was assessed using bone densitometry examination (DEXA) and ultrasound examination of the calcaneus (QUS). The measurements acquired using QUS and DEXA were compared between patients with spinal cord injury and a control group of ten healthy individuals. Results: The T-score values for femoral neck using DEXA (P < 0.0022) and those using QUS of the calcaneus (P < 0.0005) differed significantly between the groups, and the means in the normal subjects were higher than those in spinal cord injury patients who would receive electrical stimulation. In spinal cord injury patients, the significant differences were found between the QUS T-score for calcaneus and the DEXA scores for the lumbar spine and femoral neck. Conclusions: Because of the low level of mechanical stress on the calcaneus, the results of the QUS could not be correlated with the DEXA results for diagnosing osteoporosis. Therefore, QUS seems to be not a good choice for diagnosis and follow-up.

Study design: Cross-sectional study. Objectives: To observe if there is a relationship between the level of injury by the American Spinal Cord Injury Association (ASIA) and cortical somatosensory evoked potential (SSEP) recordings of the median nerve in patients with quadriplegia. Setting: Rehabilitation Outpatient Clinic at the university hospital in Brazil. Methods: Fourteen individuals with quadriplegia and 8 healthy individuals were evaluated. Electrophysiological assessment of the median nerve was performed by evoked potential equipment. The injury level was obtained by ASIA. N(9), N(13) and N(20) were analyzed based on the presence or absence of responses. The parameters used for analyzing these responses were the latency and the amplitude. Data were analyzed using mixed-effect models. Results: N(9) responses were found in all patients with quadriplegia with a similar latency and amplitude observed in healthy individuals; N(13) responses were not found in any patients with quadriplegia. N(20) responses were not found in C5 patients with quadriplegia but it was present in C6 and C7 patients. Their latencies were similar to healthy individuals (P > 0.05) but the amplitudes were decreased (P < 0.05). Conclusion: This study suggests that the SSEP responses depend on the injury level, considering that the individuals with C6 and C7 injury levels, both complete and incomplete, presented SSEP recordings in the cortical area. It also showed a relationship between the level of spinal cord injury assessed by ASIA and the median nerve SSEP responses, through the latency and amplitude recordings. An improvement to the quality bidimensional Delaunay mesh generation algorithm, which combines the mesh refinement algorithms strategy of Ruppert and Shewchuk is proposed in this research. The developed technique uses diametral lenses criterion, introduced by L. P. Chew, with the purpose of eliminating the extremely obtuse triangles in the boundary mesh. This method splits the boundary segment and obtains an initial prerefinement, and thus reducing the number of necessary iterations to generate a high quality sequential triangulation. Moreover, it decreases the intensity of the communication and synchronization between subdomains in parallel mesh refinement.

An alternative approach for the analysis of arbitrarily curved shells is developed in this paper based on the idea of initial deformations. By `alternative` we mean that neither differential geometry nor the concept of degeneration is invoked here to describe the shell surface. We begin with a flat reference configuration for the shell mid-surface, after which the initial (curved) geometry is mapped as a stress-free deformation from the plane position. The actual motion of the shell takes place only after this initial mapping. In contrast to classical works in the literature, this strategy enables the use of only orthogonal frames within the theory and therefore objects such as Christoffel symbols, the second fundamental form or three-dimensional degenerated solids do not enter the formulation. Furthermore, the issue of physical components of tensors does not appear. Another important aspect (but not exclusive of our scheme) is the possibility to describe exactly the initial geometry. The model is kinematically exact, encompasses finite strains in a totally consistent manner and is here discretized under the light of the finite element method (although implementation via mesh-free techniques is also possible). We derive the Cramer-Rao Lower Bound (CRLB) for the estimation of initial conditions of noise-embedded orbits produced by general one-dimensional maps. We relate this bound`s asymptotic behavior to the attractor`s Lyapunov number and show numerical examples. These results pave the way for more suitable choices for the chaotic signal generator in some chaotic digital communication systems. (c) 2006 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

The variation in the Ca:Mg ratio in amendments used to neutralize soil acidity is one way of altering the availability of those nutrients to the plants in acid soils. The objective of the work was to evaluate the effect of different proportions of calcium and magnesium in the form of CaCO(3) and MgCO(3) Oil the nutrient uptake, and initial production of dry matter by corn plants. The study was carried out in greenhouse conditions, in Lages, SC, with a completely randomized experimental design, with three replications. The treatments were the application of equivalent to 21.0 t ha(-1) of lime, using mixtures of CaCO(3) and MgCO(3) in several proportions to obtain different Ca:Mg ratios (1: 1, 2:1, 4:1, 8:1, 16:1 and 32:1), on a Humic Alic Cambisol, with 310 g kg(-1) of clay. The application of treatments caused the following Ca:Mg ratios in the CEC: 1. 1: 1, 2.1:1, 4.0:1, 8.1:1, 16.4:1 and 31.8:1. The high concentrations of exchangeable Ca in soil caused by addition of lime with high Ca content inhibited the uptake of Mg and K by the corn plants. The increase in the soil Ca:Mg ratio reduced the dry matter production and height of plants in the initial stage of development.

Drinking hot mate has been associated with risk for esophageal cancer in South America. Thus. the aims of this study were to evaluate the modifying effects of mate intake on DNA damage and esophageal carcinogenesis induced by diethylnitrosamine (DEN) and thermal injury (TI) in male Wistar rats. At the initiation phase of carcinogenesis, rats were treated with DEN (8 x 80 mg/kg) and submitted to TI (water at 65 degrees C, 1 ml/rat, instilled into the esophagus). Concomitantly, the animals received mate (2.0% w/v) for 8 weeks. Samples of peripheral blood were collected 4 h after the last DEN application for DNA damage analysis. At weeks 8 and 20, samples from esophagus and liver were also collected for histological and immunohistochemical analysis. Mate significantly decreased DNA damage in leukocytes, cell proliferation rates in both esophagus and liver and the number of preneoplastic liver lesions from DEN/TI-treated animals at week 8. A significant lower incidence of esophageal papillomas and liver adenomas and tumor multiplicity was observed in the animals previously treated with mate at week 20. Thus, mate presented protective effects against DNA damage and esophageal and liver carcinogenesis induced by DEN. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
