TEA: Timing and Energy Aware compression architecture for Efficient Configuration in CGRAs

Coarse Grained Reconfigurable Architectures (CGRAs) are emerging as enabling platforms to meet the high performance demanded by modern applications (e.g. 4G, CDMA, etc.). Recently proposed CGRAs offer time-multiplexing and dynamic applications parallelism to enhance device utilization and reduce energy consumption at the cost of additional memory (up to 50% area of the overall platform). To reduce the memory overheads, novel CGRAs employ either statistical compression, intermediate compact representation, or multicasting. Each compaction technique has different properties (i.e. compression ratio, decompression time and decompression energy) and is best suited for a particular class of applications. However, existing research only deals with these methods separately. Moreover, they only analyze the compaction ratio and do not evaluate the associated energy overheads. To tackle these issues, we propose a polymorphic compression architecture that interleaves these techniques in a unique platform. The proposed architecture allows each application to take advantage of a separate compression/decompression hierarchy (consisting of various types and implementations of hardware/software decoders) tailored to its needs. Simulation results, using different applications (FFT, Matrix multiplication, and WLAN), reveal that the choice of compression hierarchy has a significant impact on compression ratio (up to 52%), decompression energy (up to 4 orders of magnitude), and configuration time (from 33 n to 1.5 s) for the tested applications. Synthesis results reveal that introducing adaptivity incurs negligible additional overheads (1%) compared to the overall platform area.

Matka serkamolaiseen teatteriin : kohti sanatonta kerrontaa

A travelogue to serkamoan theater deals, just like its name implies, with the molding process of one theater opinion. It has been influenced by both Aristotle's poetry and Bertold Brecht's epic theater. Side by side with theater goes dance, whose development the thesis also considers briefly. Of today's theater makers, Päivi Ketonen (playback theater), Juha Hurme and Nigel Charnock (dance theater) have had a definitive impact on the Serkamoan theater view. Their relation to theater and dance is clarified in the interviews conducted by the writer, which can be found in their entirety among the appendices of this thesis. Serkamoan theater has also been influenced by the writer's studies in Portuguese theater school in 2004. In Portugal the writer had a chance to work a theater piece in a new cultural environment where, for example, a novel and paintings were used as inspiration. The strongest legacy from Portugal however was the desire to do theater that can be understood without words. Serkamoan theater considers the combinations of theater and dance in performing arts, agreeing with, among others, Pina Bausch's footsteps. Serkamoan theater ladles its inspiration from theater, dance, human being, human body and movement. It is theater that cannot be understood through intellect but through the heart.

Airbus 340 -lentokoneen C-huoltotelakoiden layout-suunnitelma

Tässä insinöörityössä tehtiin layout-suunnitelmat C-huoltotelakoista Airbus 340 -lentokoneiden huoltoa varten ja selvitettiin samojen huoltotelakoiden käyttömahdollisuutta myös muiden konetyyppien huolloissa. Insinöörityön toimeksiantajana toimi Finnairin tekniikan lentokonekorjaamo, jonka käyttöön huoltotelakat suunniteltiin. Työ aloitettiin perehtymällä Airbus 340 -lentokoneen mittoihin ja C-huoltotarpeisiin. Seuraavaksi käytiin läpi erilaisia huoltotelakkavaihtoehtoja ja niiden aiheuttamia kustannuksia pitkällä ajanjaksolla. Huoltotelakoiden soveltuvuutta tarkasteltiin eri lentokonetyypien käyttöön. Huoltotelakoiden suunnittelussa huomioitiin myös niiden varastointivaatimukset. Lisäksi työssä käytiin läpi viranomaisten turvallisuusvaatimukset sekä lentokonehuoltotoiminnan erityisvaatimukset huoltotelakoille. Työn tuloksena syntyneitä investointilaskelmia ja layout-suunnitelmia käytetään hyödyksi valittaessa kustannuksiltaan ja käyttövaatimuksiltaan parhaiten Airbus 340 -lentokoneiden C-huoltovaatimuksia vastaava huoltotelakkavaihtoehto. Huoltotelakoiden layout-suunnitelmat on tehty työntekijöiden näkökulmat huomioiden, jotta työnteko olisi tehokasta ja ergonomista.

Covariant Phase Observables in Quantum Mechanics

The aim of this thesis is to present a solution to the quantum phase problem of the single-mode optical field. The solution is based on the use of phase shift covariant normalized positive operator measures. These measures describe realistic direct coherent state phase measurements such as the phase measurement schemes based on eight-port homodyne detection or heterodyne detection. The structure of covariant operator measures and, more generally, covariant sesquilinear form measures is analyzed in this work. Four different characterizations for phase shift covariant normalized positive operator measures are presented. The canonical covariant operator measure is definded and its properties are studied. Finally, some other suggested phase theories are introduced to investigate their connections to the covariant sesquilinear form measures.

Katsekulmien vaikutus näönrasitusoireisiin näyttöpäätetyössä

Päätetyöhön epäillään liittyvän monenlaisia ongelmia. Eniten epäiltyjä ja käsiteltyjä ovat silmien rasitus- ja ärsytysoireet sekä päätetyön kuormittavuus ja näköergonomiset ongelmat. Näkemiseen ja silmiin liittyvät ongelmat näyttöpäätetyöskentelyssä ovat hyvin tavallisia. Niitä kutsutaan termillä Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS). Opinnäytetyömme tarkoituksena oli tutkia kuinka eri katsekulmat vaikuttavat näönrasitusoireisiin sekä olemassa oleviin näköjärjestelmän vikoihin. Kokeessa näyttöpääte sijoitettiin kolmeen eri katsekulmaan. Nämä kulmat olivat 15 astetta horisontaalilinjan yläpuolelle, horisontaalilinja sekä 15 astetta horisontaalilinjan alapuolelle. Tutkimus oli vertaileva ikäryhmien 20-39 ja 40-60-vuotiaat välillä. Opinnäytetyö on kvantitatiivinen. Tutkimusjoukko koostui 80 henkilöstä. VSQ- ja SSQ-kyselylomakkeilla ja mittauksilla saatu aineisto analysoitiin SPSS-ohjelmassa Wilcoxonin merkkitestillä ja Mann-Whitneyn U-testillä. Koko tutkimusjoukon SSQ-oireiden keskiarvoja tarkastellessa voitiin oireiden todeta voimistuneen tehtävän aikana tilastollisesti merkitsevästi. + 15 asteen katsekulmassa havaittiin oireiden voimistumista eniten. SSQ-oireiden jakaminen eri ryhmiin toi esiin tilastollisesti merkitseviä eroja varsinkin silmänrasitusoireiden kohdalla. - 15 asteen katsekulma aiheutti vähiten oireiden arvojen kasvua tehtävän aikana silmänrasitus- ja disorientaatio-oireiden ryhmissä. Tarkasteltaessa koko joukon silmänrasitus- ja disorientaatio-oireita voidaan päätellä näyttöpäätetyön aiheuttavan rasitusoireiden lisääntymistä, koska merkitsevyystaso näissä oli tilastollisesti erittäin merkitsevä. Sekä kokonaisuudessaan että oireryhmittäin oli huomionarvoista, että 20-40-vuotiaat kokivat näyttöpäätetyön rasittavan enemmän. Mittaustulosten perusteella voidaan sanoa, että akkommodaatiolaajuus ja konvergenssikyky olivat merkitsevästi heikompia tehtävän jälkeen. Kyynelfilmin repeämisajan keskiarvo kokeen jälkeen koko tutkimusjoukolla oli normaaliarvoa alhaisempi. Yhteistyökumppanimme voi hyödyntää työmme tuloksia laajemmassa tutkimuksessa. Optimal taxation without state-contingent debt

To recover a version of Barro's (1979) `random walk'tax smoothing outcome, we modify Lucas and Stokey's (1983) economyto permit only risk--free debt. This imparts near unit root like behaviorto government debt, independently of the government expenditureprocess, a realistic outcome in the spirit of Barro's. We showhow the risk--free--debt--only economy confronts the Ramsey plannerwith additional constraints on equilibrium allocations thattake the form of a sequence of measurability conditions.We solve the Ramsey problem by formulating it in terms of a Lagrangian,and applying a Parameterized Expectations Algorithm tothe associated first--order conditions. The first--order conditions andnumerical impulse response functions partially affirmBarro's random walk outcome. Though the behaviors oftax rates, government surpluses, and government debts differ, allocationsare very close for computed Ramsey policies across incomplete and completemarkets economies.
