Oxidation of ethanol on ruthenium-modified Pt(775) and Pt(332) stepped electrodes has been studied using electrochemical and FTIR techniques. It has been found that the oxidation of ethanol on these electrodes takes place preferentially on the step sites yielding CO(2) as the major final product. The cleavage of the C-C bond, which is the required step to yield CO(2), occurs only on this type of site. The presence of low ruthenium coverages on the step sites promotes the complete oxidation of ethanol since it facilitates the oxidation of CO formed on the step from the cleavage of the C-C bond. However, high ruthenium coverages have an important inhibiting effect since the adatoms block the step sites, which are required for the cleavage of the C-C bond. Under these conditions, the oxidation current diminishes and the major product in the oxidation process is acetic acid, which is the product formed preferentially on the (111) terrace sites.

We studied the open circuit interaction of methanol and ethanol with oxidized platinum electrodes using in situ infrared spectroscopy. For methanol, it was found that formic acid is the main species formed in the initial region of the transient and that the steep decrease of the open circuit potential coincides with an explosive increase in the CO(2) production, which is followed by an increase in the coverage of adsorbed CO. For ethanol, acetaldehyde was the main product detected and only traces of dissolved CO(2) and adsorbed CO were found after the steep potential decay. In both cases, the transients were interpreted in terms of (a) the emergence of sub-surface oxygen in the beginning of the transient, where the oxide content is high, and (b) the autocatalytic production of free platinum sites for lower oxide content during the steep decay of the open circuit potential.

Ethanol oxidation on platinum stepped surfaces vicinal to the (111) pole modified by tin has been studied to determine the role of this adatom in the oxidation mechanism. Tin has been slowly deposited so that the initial stages of the deposition take place on the step, and deposition on the terrace only occurs when the step has been completely decorated. Voltammetric and chronoamperometric experiments demonstrate that tin on the step catalyzes the oxidation. The maximum enhancement is found when the step is completely decorated by tin. FTIR experiments using normal and isotopically labeled ethanol have been used to elucidate the effect of the tin adatoms in the mechanism. The obtained results indicate that the role of tin is double: (i) when the surface has sites capable of breaking the C-C bond of the molecule, that is, when the step sites are not completely covered by tin, it promotes the oxidation of CO formed from the molecular fragments to CO(2) through a bifunctional mechanism and (ii) it catalyzes the oxidation of ethanol to acetic acid.

A new approach for the integration of dual contactless conductivity and amperometric detection with an electrophoresis microchip system is presented. The PDMS layer with the embedded channels was reversibly sealed to a thin glass substrate (400 mu m), on top of which a palladium electrode had been previously fabricated enabling end-channel amperometric detection. The thin glass substrate served also as a physical wall between the separation channel and the sensing copper electrodes for contactless conductivity detection. The latter were not integrated in the microfluidic device, but fabricated on an independent plastic substrate allowing a simpler and more cost-effective fabrication of the chip. PDMS/glass chips with merely contactless conductivity detection were first characterized in terms of sensitivity, efficiency and reproducibility. The separation efficiency of this system was found to be similar or slightly superior to other systems reported in the literature. The simultaneous determination of ionic and electroactive species was illustrated by the separation of peroxynitrite degradation products, i.e. NO(3)(-) (non-electroactive) and NO(2)(-) (electroactive), using hybrid PDMS/glass chips with dual contactless conductivity and amperometric detection. While both ions were detected by contactless conductivity detection with good efficiency, NO(2)(-) was also simultaneously detected amperometrically with a significant enhancement in sensitivity compared to contactless conductivity detection.

The release of xylose reductase (XR) from Candida mogii by cell disruption in a glass beads mill was studied using an experimental design. Statistical analysis of the results indicated that XR volumetric activity increases by using lower glass beads diameter and cell concentration, and by increasing the number of agitation pulses. Based on results attained in experimental design, assays were carried out aiming at the maximization of XR release. Under optimized conditions (300 mu m glass beads, 45 g/l of cell concentration and 50 pulses), the XR volumetric activity reach 0.683 U/ml. Disruption with glass beads showed to be the most efficient method for XR release when compared to sonication process. The highest specific activity (0.175 U/mg of protein) was found in extracts obtained by suspension freezing and thawing, which suggests that this method can be used as a selective process of cell disruption for XR release. A combination of an extension of the topological instability ""lambda criterion"" and a thermodynamic criterion were applied to the Al-La system, indicating the best range of compositions for glass formation. Alloy compositions in this range were prepared by melt-spinning and casting in an arc-melting furnace with a wedge-section copper mold. The GFA of these samples was evaluated by X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry and scanning electron microscopy. The results indicated that the gamma* parameter of compositions with high GFA is higher, corresponding to a range in which the lambda parameter is greater than 0.1, which are compositions far from Al solid solution. A new alloy was identified with the best GFA reported so far for this system, showing a maximum thickness of 286 mu m in a wedge-section copper mold. In this study, the influence of the glass addition and sintering parameters on the densification and mechanical properties of tetragonal zirconia polycrystals (3Y-TZP) ceramics were evaluated. High-purity tetragonal ZrO2 powder and La2O3-rich glass were used as starting powders. Two compositions based on ZrO2 and containing 5wt.% and 10wt.% of La2O3-rich glass were studied in this work. The starting powders were mixed/milled by planetary milling, dried at 90 degrees C for 24 h, sieved through a 60 mesh screen and uniaxially cold pressed under 80 MPa. The samples were sintered in air at 1200 degrees C, 1300 degrees C, 1400 degrees C for 60 min and at 1450 degrees C for 120 min, with heating and cooling rates of 10 degrees C/min. Sintered samples were characterized by relative density, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanningelectron microscopy (SEM). Hardness and fracture toughness were obtained by Vickers indentation method. Dense sintered samples were obtained for all conditions. Furthermore, only tetragonal-ZrO2 was identified as crystalline phase in sintered samples, independently of the conditions studied. Samples sintered at 1300 degrees C for 60 min presented the optimal mechanical properties with hardness and fracture toughness values near to 12 GPa and 8.5 MPa m(1/2) respectively. The crystallisation behaviour for alloys in the Al-rich corner in the Al-La-Ni system is reported in this paper Alloys were selected based on the topological instability criterion (lambda criterion) calculated from the alloy composition and metallic radii of the alloying elements and aluminum Amorphous ribbons were produced by melt-spinning and the crystallisation reactions were analysed by X-ray diffraction and calorimetry The results showed that increasing the values of lambda from 0.072 to 0.16 resulted in the following changes in the crystallisation behaviour, as predicted by the lambda criterion (a) nanocrystallisation of alpha-Al for the alloy composition corresponding to lambda = 0 072 and (b) detection of the glass transition temperature, T(g), for the alloys with composition close to lambda approximate to 0.1 line. For compositions corresponding to both ends of the lambda approximate to 0 1 line (near the binaries lines) T(g) could be detected only in the ""intermediary"" central region, and the alloy we produced in this region was considered the best glass former for the Al-rich corner Also, except for the alloys with the highest NI content, crystallisation proceeded by two distinct exothermic peaks which are typical of nanocrystallisation transformation. These behaviours are discussed in terms of compositional (lambda parameter) and topological aspects to account for cluster formation in the amorphous phase. Optical monitoring systems are necessary to manufacture multilayer thin-film optical filters with low tolerance on spectrum specification. Furthermore, to have better accuracy on the measurement of film thickness, direct monitoring is a must. Direct monitoring implies acquiring spectrum data from the optical component undergoing the film deposition itself, in real time. In making film depositions on surfaces of optical components, the high vacuum evaporator chamber is the most popular equipment. Inside the evaporator, at the top of the chamber, there is a metallic support with several holes where the optical components are assembled. This metallic support has rotary motion to promote film homogenization. To acquire a measurement of the spectrum of the film in deposition, it is necessary to pass a light beam through a glass witness undergoing the film deposition process, and collect a sample of the light beam using a spectrometer. As both the light beam and the light collector are stationary, a synchronization system is required to identify the moment at which the optical component passes through the light beam.

Surface heat treatment in glasses and ceramics, using CO(2) lasers, has attracted the attention of several researchers around the world due to its impact in technological applications, such as lab-on-a-chip devices, diffraction gratings and microlenses. Microlens fabrication on a glass surface has been studied mainly due to its importance in optical devices (fiber coupling, CCD signal enhancement, etc). The goal of this work is to present a systematic study of the conditions for microlens fabrications, along with the viability of using microlens arrays, recorded on the glass surface, as bidimensional codes for product identification. This would allow the production of codes without any residues (like the fine powder generated by laser ablation) and resistance to an aggressive environment, such as sterilization processes. The microlens arrays were fabricated using a continuous wave CO(2) laser, focused on the surface of flat commercial soda-lime silicate glass substrates. The fabrication conditions were studied based on laser power, heating time and microlens profiles. A He-Ne laser was used as a light source in a qualitative experiment to test the viability of using the microlenses as bidimensional codes.

A quantitative correlation between the glass forming ability and the electronic parameters of metallic alloys is presented. It is found that the critical cooling rate for glass formation (R(c)) correlates well with the average work function difference (Delta phi) and the average electron density difference (Delta n(ws)(1/3)) among the constituent elements of the investigated alloys. A correlation coefficient (R(2)) of 0.77 was found for 68 alloys in 30 metallic systems, which is better than the previous proposed correlation between the glass forming ability and the average Pauling electronegativity difference.

This work evaluates the glass formation of selected alloys based on the Ti-Zr-Fe-Co system, assuming the synergy of two distinct criteria: minimum topological instability and average electronegativity plots. Combining the minimum topological instability and the average electronegativity values result in a plot in which the most probable good glass former compositions are identified Ti-Zr rich alloys with Fe and Co additions were produced, compared against the final plot, and the best glass forming alloy composition was found to be very close the theoretically predicted ones on the Ti-Zr rich side, for both Ti-Zr-Fe and Ti-Zr-Co systems. In this paper, we report the remarkable agreement of the glass forming ability of binary alloys with a new criterion that combines the topological instability parameter (lambda) and the average electronegativity difference among the elements of an alloy, assuming both exert a synergetic effect. The best glass forming compositions for Zr-Cu and Ti-Ni systems are well predicted by this new approach. Although the new criterion needs further refinement, it is concluded that the proposed approach is a promising and simple tool to guide and reduce the tedious and labour intensive work to find good glass former compositions in metallic systems. Mechanical and tribological properties of a partially crystallized sintered glass-ceramic were compared to two commercial floor tiles: black granite and porcelainized stoneware. Mechanical properties, hardness and elastic modulus were evaluated by instrumented indentation. Friction coefficient and wear characterization were evaluated using a reciprocating ball-on-flat tribometer in two controlled environments: air with relative humidity of 53% and under running water at 23 degrees C. The sintered glass-ceramic and porcelainized stoneware presented similar mechanical and tribological properties. Regarding the mechanical and tribological properties, the results suggest that this glass-ceramic is suitable to be used as industrial tile. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A thermodynamic approach to predict bulk glass-forming compositions in binary metallic systems was recently proposed. In this approach. the parameter gamma* = Delta H-amor/(Delta H-inter - Delta H-amor) indicates the glass-forming ability (GFA) from the standpoint of the driving force to form different competing phases, and Delta H-amor and Delta H-inter are the enthalpies for-lass and intermetallic formation, respectively. Good glass-forming compositions should have a large negative enthalpy for glass formation and a very small difference for intermetallic formation, thus making the glassy phase easily reachable even under low cooling rates. The gamma* parameter showed a good correlation with GFA experimental data in the Ni-Nb binary system. In this work, a simple extension of the gamma* parameter is applied in the ternary Al-Ni-Y system. The calculated gamma* isocontours in the ternary diagram are compared with experimental results of glass formation in that system. Despite sonic misfitting, the best glass formers are found quite close to the highest gamma* values, leading to the conclusion that this thermodynamic approach can lie extended to ternary systems, serving as a useful tool for the development of new glass-forming compositions. Finally the thermodynamic approach is compared with the topological instability criteria used to predict the thermal behavior of glassy Al alloys. (C) 2007 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.
