Welland Canal Survey of Lands Garrett Vanderburgh, 1826

Noteable features include; division between Swayze and Carl's land. The deed for the land is dated November 9th, 1826. The land totals 36 acres and 26 perches. Surveyor notes are seen in pencil on the map.

Welland Canal/St. Lawrence Seaway Authority fonds, 1826-1880, 1905-1951

The Welland Canal Company was formed in 1824 by William Hamilton Merritt. Construction of the first Welland Canal began in 1829 and was completed in 1834. The canal ran south from Port Dalhousie along Twelve Mile Creek to St. Catharines. An extension was built in 1833 to Gravelly Bay, now Port Colborne. As ships became larger and the wooden locks deteriorated, the need for a new canal became apparent. In 1839, the government purchased the Welland Canal Company’s assets and began making plans for the construction of a second canal. Construction began in 1841 and was completed by 1845. In 1887, a third Welland Canal was completed, which operated until 1932, when a fourth canal was completed. This canal remains in operation today.

Los estudiantes del Colegio Mayor de Nuestra Señora del Rosario : 1826-1842

La línea institucional de investigación “Historia de la Universidad del Rosario” fue creada por el rector y la H. Consiliatura en el año 2000, con ocasión del advenimiento de la fecha conmemorativa de sus trescientos cincuenta años de fundación. Tiene el propósito de desarrollar una agenda investigativa para reconstruir la historia completa de una de las universidades más antiguas de América que, desde 1653 hasta el preste, en íntima fusión con los procesos de la historia nacional, ha mantenido el cumplimento de los objetivos educativos de su fundador, fray Cristóbal de Torres. Dicha agenda, que cobija todos los temas sustantivos del Colegio Mayor de Nuestra Señora del Rosario, involucra una científica labor investigativa, por secuencias cronológicas, prevista para varios años. Cada uno de sus resultados integrarán temáticamente la presente colección de “cuadernos” como avances para el conocimientos de historiadores, estudiosos nacionales e internacionales de la historia de la educación colombiana y del gran público interesado en conocer las interrelaciones políticas, económicas y sociales de la historia patria con esos proceso en los que interactúan íntimamente. Al final, estos “cuadernos temáticos” serán consolidados para conformar los volúmenes de la Historia de la Universidad, evidenciando las razones por las cuales el Colegio Mayor de Nuestra Señora del Rosario tiene el público reconocimiento de “Cuna de la República”.
