Rubber has become an indispensable material in Ocean technology. Rubber components play critical roles such as sealing, damping, environmental protection, electrical insulation etc. in most under water engineering applications. Technology driven innovations in electro acoustic transducers and other sophisticated end uses have enabled quantum jump in the quality and reliability of rubber components. Under water electro acoustic transducers use rubbers as a critical material in their construction. Work in this field has lead to highly reliable and high performance materials which has enhanced service life of transducers to the extent of 1015 years. Present work concentrates on these materials. Conventional rubbers are inadequate to meet many of the stringent functional of the requirements. There exists large gap of information in the rubber technology of under water rubbers, particularly in the context of under water electro acoustic transducers. Present study is towards filling up the gaps of information in this crucial area. The research work has been in the area of compounding and characterisation of rubbers for use in under water electro acoustic transducers. The study also covers specific material system such as encapsulation material, baffle material, seal material, etc. Life prediction techniques of under water rubbers in general has been established with reference to more than one functional property. This thesis is divided into 6 chapters.

Web services from different partners can be combined to applications that realize a more complex business goal. Such applications built as Web service compositions define how interactions between Web services take place in order to implement the business logic. Web service compositions not only have to provide the desired functionality but also have to comply with certain Quality of Service (QoS) levels. Maximizing the users' satisfaction, also reflected as Quality of Experience (QoE), is a primary goal to be achieved in a Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA). Unfortunately, in a dynamic environment like SOA unforeseen situations might appear like services not being available or not responding in the desired time frame. In such situations, appropriate actions need to be triggered in order to avoid the violation of QoS and QoE constraints. In this thesis, proper solutions are developed to manage Web services and Web service compositions with regard to QoS and QoE requirements. The Business Process Rules Language (BPRules) was developed to manage Web service compositions when undesired QoS or QoE values are detected. BPRules provides a rich set of management actions that may be triggered for controlling the service composition and for improving its quality behavior. Regarding the quality properties, BPRules allows to distinguish between the QoS values as they are promised by the service providers, QoE values that were assigned by end-users, the monitored QoS as measured by our BPR framework, and the predicted QoS and QoE values. BPRules facilitates the specification of certain user groups characterized by different context properties and allows triggering a personalized, context-aware service selection tailored for the specified user groups. In a service market where a multitude of services with the same functionality and different quality values are available, the right services need to be selected for realizing the service composition. We developed new and efficient heuristic algorithms that are applied to choose high quality services for the composition. BPRules offers the possibility to integrate multiple service selection algorithms. The selection algorithms are applicable also for non-linear objective functions and constraints. The BPR framework includes new approaches for context-aware service selection and quality property predictions. We consider the location information of users and services as context dimension for the prediction of response time and throughput. The BPR framework combines all new features and contributions to a comprehensive management solution. Furthermore, it facilitates flexible monitoring of QoS properties without having to modify the description of the service composition. We show how the different modules of the BPR framework work together in order to execute the management rules. We evaluate how our selection algorithms outperform a genetic algorithm from related research. The evaluation reveals how context data can be used for a personalized prediction of response time and throughput.

We propose to analyze shapes as “compositions” of distances in Aitchison geometry as an alternate and complementary tool to classical shape analysis, especially when size is non-informative. Shapes are typically described by the location of user-chosen landmarks. However the shape – considered as invariant under scaling, translation, mirroring and rotation – does not uniquely define the location of landmarks. A simple approach is to use distances of landmarks instead of the locations of landmarks them self. Distances are positive numbers defined up to joint scaling, a mathematical structure quite similar to compositions. The shape fixes only ratios of distances. Perturbations correspond to relative changes of the size of subshapes and of aspect ratios. The power transform increases the expression of the shape by increasing distance ratios. In analogy to the subcompositional consistency, results should not depend too much on the choice of distances, because different subsets of the pairwise distances of landmarks uniquely define the shape. Various compositional analysis tools can be applied to sets of distances directly or after minor modifications concerning the singularity of the covariance matrix and yield results with direct interpretations in terms of shape changes. The remaining problem is that not all sets of distances correspond to a valid shape. Nevertheless interpolated or predicted shapes can be backtransformated by multidimensional scaling (when all pairwise distances are used) or free geodetic adjustment (when sufficiently many distances are used)

Aitchison and Bacon-Shone (1999) considered convex linear combinations of compositions. In other words, they investigated compositions of compositions, where the mixing composition follows a logistic Normal distribution (or a perturbation process) and the compositions being mixed follow a logistic Normal distribution. In this paper, I investigate the extension to situations where the mixing composition varies with a number of dimensions. Examples would be where the mixing proportions vary with time or distance or a combination of the two. Practical situations include a river where the mixing proportions vary along the river, or across a lake and possibly with a time trend. This is illustrated with a dataset similar to that used in the Aitchison and Bacon-Shone paper, which looked at how pollution in a loch depended on the pollution in the three rivers that feed the loch. Here, I explicitly model the variation in the linear combination across the loch, assuming that the mean of the logistic Normal distribution depends on the river flows and relative distance from the source origins

This paper examines a dataset which is modeled well by the Poisson-Log Normal process and by this process mixed with Log Normal data, which are both turned into compositions. This generates compositional data that has zeros without any need for conditional models or assuming that there is missing or censored data that needs adjustment. It also enables us to model dependence on covariates and within the composition

The R-package “compositions”is a tool for advanced compositional analysis. Its basic functionality has seen some conceptual improvement, containing now some facilities to work with and represent ilr bases built from balances, and an elaborated subsys- tem for dealing with several kinds of irregular data: (rounded or structural) zeroes, incomplete observations and outliers. The general approach to these irregularities is based on subcompositions: for an irregular datum, one can distinguish a “regular” sub- composition (where all parts are actually observed and the datum behaves typically) and a “problematic” subcomposition (with those unobserved, zero or rounded parts, or else where the datum shows an erratic or atypical behaviour). Systematic classification schemes are proposed for both outliers and missing values (including zeros) focusing on the nature of irregularities in the datum subcomposition(s). To compute statistics with values missing at random and structural zeros, a projection approach is implemented: a given datum contributes to the estimation of the desired parameters only on the subcompositon where it was observed. For data sets with values below the detection limit, two different approaches are provided: the well-known imputation technique, and also the projection approach. To compute statistics in the presence of outliers, robust statistics are adapted to the characteristics of compositional data, based on the minimum covariance determinant approach. The outlier classification is based on four different models of outlier occur- rence and Monte-Carlo-based tests for their characterization. Furthermore the package provides special plots helping to understand the nature of outliers in the dataset. Keywords: coda-dendrogram, lost values, MAR, missing data, MCD estimator, robustness, rounded zeros
