Altitude profile of aerosol Single Scattering Albedo (SSA), derived from simultaneous in-situ airborne measurements of the coefficients of aerosol absorption and scattering off the west coast of India over the Arabian Sea (AS), during January 2009 is presented. While both the absorption and scattering coefficients decreased with altitude, their vertical structure differed significantly. Consequently, the derived SSA, with a surface value of 0.94, decreased with altitude, illustrating increasing relative dominance of aerosol absorption at higher altitudes. Altitude profile of SSA, when examined in conjunction with that of hemispheric backscatter fraction, revealed that the continental influence on the aerosol properties was higher at higher altitude, rather than the effect of marine environment. During an east-west transect across the peninsular India at an altitude of similar to 2500 m (free troposphere), it was found that the aerosol scattering coefficients remained nearly the same over both east and west coasts. Energy harvesting sensors (EHS), which harvest energy from the environment in order to sense and then communicate their measurements over a wireless link, provide the tantalizing possibility of perpetual lifetime operation of a sensor network. The wireless communication link design problem needs to be revisited for these sensors as the energy harvested can be random and small and not available when required. In this paper, we develop a simple model that captures the interactions between important parameters that govern the communication link performance of a EHS node, and analyze its outage probability for both slow fading and fast fading wireless channels. Our analysis brings out the critical importance of the energy profile and the energy storage capability on the EHS link performance. Our results show that properly tuning the transmission parameters of the EHS node and having even a small amount of energy storage capability improves the EHS link performance considerably.

Purpose: Limbal stem cell deficiency is a challenging clinical problem and the current treatment involves replenishing the depleted limbal stem cell (LSC) pool by either limbal tissue transplantation or use of cultivated limbal epithelial cells (LEC). Our experience of cultivating the LEC on denuded human amniotic membrane using a feeder cell free method, led to identification of mesenchymal cells of limbus (MC-L), which showed phenotypic resemblance to bone marrow derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSC-BM). To understand the transcriptional profile of these cells, microarray experiments were carried out. Methods: RNA was isolated from cultured LEC, MC-L and MSC-BM and microarray experiments were carried out by using Agilent chip (4x44 k). The microarray data was validated by using Realtime and semiquntitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. Results: The microarray analysis revealed specific gene signature of LEC and MC-L, and also their complementary role related to cytokine and growth factor profile, thus supporting the nurturing roles of the MC-L. We have also observed similar and differential gene expression between MC-L and MSC-BM.Conclusions: This study represents the first extensive gene expression analysis of limbal explant culture derived epithelial and mesenchymal cells and as such reveals new insight into the biology, ontogeny, and in vivo function of these cells.

This paper presents a five-level inverter scheme with four two-level inverters for a four-pole induction motor (IM) drive. In a conventional three-phase four-pole IM, there exists two identical voltage-profile winding coil groups per phase around the armature, which are connected in series and spatially apart by two pole pitches. In this paper, these two identical voltage-profile pole-pair winding coils in each phase of the IM are disconnected and fed from four two-level inverters from four sides of the windings with one-fourth dc-link voltage as compared to a conventional five-level neutral-point-clamped inverter. The scheme presented in this paper does not require any special design modification for the induction machine. For this paper, a four-pole IM drive is used, and the scheme can be easily extended to IMs with more than four poles. The proposed scheme is experimentally verified on a four-pole 5-hp IM drive.

X-ray diffraction line profile analysis (XRDLPA) techniques have been applied to investigate the deformed microstructure of a recently developed boron modified two-phase titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V. The alloy was hot compressed at 750 degrees C up to 50% height reduction at two different strain rates (10(-3) S-1 and 1 S-1). Microstructural parameters like average domain size, average microstrain within the domain and dislocation density of the two phases were determined using X-ray diffraction line profile analysis. The results indicate an increase in the microstrain and dislocation density for the alpha-phase and decrease for the beta-phase in the case of boron modified alloys as compared to the normal material. Microstructural modifications viz, the grain refinement and the presence of hard, brittle TiB particles in the case of boron modified alloy are held responsible for the observed difference in the dislocation density. An approximate dynamic programming (ADP)-based suboptimal neurocontroller to obtain desired temperature for a high-speed aerospace vehicle is synthesized in this paper. A I-D distributed parameter model of a fin is developed from basic thermal physics principles. "Snapshot" solutions of the dynamics are generated with a simple dynamic inversion-based feedback controller. Empirical basis functions are designed using the "proper orthogonal decomposition" (POD) technique and the snapshot solutions. A low-order nonlinear lumped parameter system to characterize the infinite dimensional system is obtained by carrying out a Galerkin projection. An ADP-based neurocontroller with a dual heuristic programming (DHP) formulation is obtained with a single-network-adaptive-critic (SNAC) controller for this approximate nonlinear model. Actual control in the original domain is calculated with the same POD basis functions through a reverse mapping. Further contribution of this paper includes development of an online robust neurocontroller to account for unmodeled dynamics and parametric uncertainties inherent in such a complex dynamic system. A neural network (NN) weight update rule that guarantees boundedness of the weights and relaxes the need for persistence of excitation (PE) condition is presented. Simulation studies show that in a fairly extensive but compact domain, any desired temperature profile can be achieved starting from any initial temperature profile. Therefore, the ADP and NN-based controllers appear to have the potential to become controller synthesis tools for nonlinear distributed parameter systems.

An attempt is made to draw a profile of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and to project its many actions. The amazing versatility of its participation in a number of synthetic reactions lies in the oligophosphate structure. Many proteins that use ATP have conserved binding 'P-loop' but this gives no clue what makes it so special. The energy transducing reactions leading to synthesis of the terminal phosphodiester had at least three strategies. Of these, direct dehydration and transfer of inorganic phosphate using respiratory energy operate through mechano-coupling in a multisubunit protein. This tripartite, knob-stalk-base structure provides a novel mechanism of rotational catalysis and the tiniest molecular motor, All the reactions occur in concert with no sign of energized chemical intermediate. With the new knowledge on the crystal structure of F-1-ATPase, proton translocation needs a relook. An alternative perspective is emerging on energy being received and stored in polypeptide structure by breaking hydrogen bonds. Membrane serves the purpose of mobilizing the constituent proteins and also as a potential energy carrier of proteins with little loss of energy.

Complete plants were regenerated from in vitro cultured immature cotyledon segments of groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L. cv. TMV-7) by organogenesis. Callus cultures were best Initiated from immature cotyledon segments on MS (Murashige and Skoog) salts containing B5 vitamins supplemented with indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) and alpha -naphthalene acetic acid (NAA; 4.0 mg L-1) and kinetin (KIN; 0.5 L-1). Calluses were transferred to a medium containing KIN (2.0 mg L-1) and IAA and NAA (0.5 mg L-1) for shoot Initiation. The regenerated shoots were transferred to a medium containing Indole-3-butyric acid (IBA; 2.0 mg L-1) and KIN (0.2 mg L-1) for developing roots. In vitro produced plantlets developed sucessfully, matured, and set seed. The protein profiles [sodium dodecyl sulphate - polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE)] of callus, callus with shoot, and callus with shoot and root showed differences.

In this paper, power management algorithms for energy harvesting sensors (EHS) that operate purely based on energy harvested from the environment are proposed. To maintain energy neutrality, EHS nodes schedule their utilization of the harvested power so as to save/draw energy into/from an inefficient battery during peak/low energy harvesting periods, respectively. Under this constraint, one of the key system design goals is to transmit as much data as possible given the energy harvesting profile. For implementational simplicity, it is assumed that the EHS transmits at a constant data rate with power control, when the channel is sufficiently good. By converting the data rate maximization problem into a convex optimization problem, the optimal load scheduling (power management) algorithm that maximizes the average data rate subject to energy neutrality is derived. Also, the energy storage requirements on the battery for implementing the proposed algorithm are calculated. Further, robust schemes that account for the insufficiency of battery storage capacity, or errors in the prediction of the harvested power are proposed. The superior performance of the proposed algorithms over conventional scheduling schemes are demonstrated through computations using numerical data from solar energy harvesting databases.

Just-in-Time (JIT) compilers for Java can be augmented by making use of runtime profile information to produce better quality code and hence achieve higher performance. In a JIT compilation environment, the profile information obtained can be readily exploited in the same run to aid recompilation and optimization of frequently executed (hot) methods. This paper discusses a low overhead path profiling scheme for dynamically profiling AT produced native code. The profile information is used in recompilation during a subsequent invocation of the hot method. During recompilation tree regions along the hot paths are enlarged and instruction scheduling at the superblock level is performed. We have used the open source LaTTe AT compiler framework for our implementation. Our results on a SPARC platform for SPEC JVM98 benchmarks indicate that (i) there is a significant reduction in the number of tree regions along the hot paths, and (ii) profile aided recompilation in LaTTe achieves performance comparable to that of adaptive LaTTe in spite of retranslation and profiling overheads.
