Glass transition temperature of freeze-dried pineapple conditioned by adsorption at various water activities at 25 degreesC was determined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). High moisture content samples corresponding to water activities higher than 0.9, obtained by liquid water addition, were also analysed. The DSC traces showed a well-visible shift in baseline at the glass transition temperature (T(g)). Besides, no ice formation was observed until water activity was equal to 0.75. For water activities lower than 0.88, the glass transition curve showed that T(g) decreased with increasing moisture content and the experimental data could be well-correlated by the Gordon-Taylor equation. For higher water activities, this curve exhibited a discontinuity, with suddenly increasing glass transition temperatures approaching a constant value that corresponds to the T(g) of the maximally freeze-concentrated amorphous matrix. The unfreezable water content was determined through melting enthalpy dependence on the sample moisture content.

The crystal nucleation rates of a metastable phase (chi) on the surface of a near stoichiometric cordierite glass were determined for temperatures between 839 and 910 degrees C (T-g similar to 800 degrees C). The surface nucleation kinetics of that phase on our glass, as well as on a stoichiometric glass (2 MgO-2Al(2)O(3)-5SiO(2)) studied by other authors, were analysed in terms of the classical nucleation theory; for the first time. It was shown that the effective interfacial energy for surface nucleation is substantially lower than that for homogeneous volume nucleation in silicate glasses, vindicating the assumption of heterogeneous nucleation on free glass surfaces. The average wetting angle between the nucleating crystals and the active solid particles was estimated to be around 46 degrees C. The pre-exponential constant was several orders of magnitude higher than the theoretical values as found for volume homogeneous nucleation in oxide glasses.

Cooperative energy transfer upconversion luminescence is investigated in Tb(3+)/Yb(3+)-codoped PbGeO(3)-PbF(2)-CdF(2) glass-ceramic and its precursor glass under resonant and off resonance infrared excitation. Bright UV-visible emission signals around 384, 415, 438 nm, and 473-490, 545, 587, and 623 nm are identified as due to the (5)D(3)((5)G(6))->(7)F(1) (J=6,5,4) and (5)D(4)->(7)F(1) (J=6,5,4,3) transitions, respectively, and readily observed. The results indicate that cooperative energy transfer between ytterbium and terbium. ions followed by excited state absorption are the dominant upconversion excitation mechanisms involved. Comparison of the upconversion process in a glass-ceramic sample and its glassy precursor revealed that the former present much higher upconversion efficiency. The dependence of the upconversion emission upon pump power, temperature, and doping content is also examined.

Energy transfer excited multiwavelength visible upconversion emission and white light generation is described in a single sample of PbGeO(3)-PbF(2)-CdF(2) glass-ceramic triply doped With Ho/Tm/Yb under single infrared laser excitation. Blue (475 nm), green (540 mn), and red (650 nm), upconversion luminescence signals are generated, and the emissions are assigned, respectively, to thulium ((1)G(4)-(3)H(6)), and holmium ((5)S(2);(5)F(4)) -> (5)I(8), (5)F(5) -> (5)I(8)) ions transitions, both excited via successive energy transfers from ytterbium ions. It is experimentally shown that with a proper combination of the rare earth ions contents, white light may be produced, with the simultaneous generation of fluorescence with controllable intensities at the wavelengths of the three primary colours in a single sample and using a single near-infrared excitation source.

Based on the Johnson-Mehl-Avrami-Kolmogorov (JMAK) theory, we propose two new models to describe the crystallisation kinetics of glass particles and use them to determine the density of nucleation sites, N(s), on glass powders. We tested these models with sintered compacts of diopside glass particles using sinter-crystallisation treatments at 825 degrees C (T(g)similar to 727 degrees C), that covered from null to almost 100% crystallised volume time fraction. We measured and compared the evolution of the crystallised volume fractions by optical microscopy and x-ray diffraction. Then we fit our expressions to experimental data using Ns and R (the average particle radius) as adjustable parameters. For comparison, we also fit to our data existing expressions that describe the crystallised volume fraction in glass powders. We demonstrate that all the methods allow one to estimate N(s) with reasonable accuracy. For our ground and water washed diopside glass powder, N(s) is between 10(10)-10(11) sites.m(-2). The reasonable agreement between experimental and adjusted R confirms the consistency of all five models tested. However, one of our equations does not require taking into account the change of crystallisation mode from 3-dimensional to 1-dimensional, and this is advantageous.

Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was used to determine phase transitions of freeze-dried plums. Samples at low and intermediate moisture contents, were conditioned by adsorption at various water activities (0.11≤a w≤0.90) at 25°C, whereas in the high moisture content region (a w>0.90) samples were obtained by direct water addition, with the resulting sorption isotherm being well described by the Guggenheim-Anderson-deBoer (GAB) model. Freeze-dried samples of separated plum skin and pulp were also analysed. At a w≤0.75, two glass transitions were visible, with the glass transition temperature (T g) decreasing with increasing a w due to the water plasticising effect. The first T g was attributed to the matrix formed by sugars and water. The second one, less visible and less plasticised by water, was probably due to macromolecules of the fruit pulp. The Gordon-Taylor model represented satisfactorily the matrix glass transition curve for a w≤0.90. In the higher moisture content range T g remained practically constant around T g′ (-57.5°C). Analysis of the glass transition curve and the sorption isotherm indicated that stability at a temperature of 25°C, would be attained by freeze dried plum at a water activity of 0.04, corresponding to a moisture content of 12.9% (dry basis). © 2006 SAGE Publications.

A specific manufacturing process to obtain continuous glass fiber-reinforced RIFE laminates was studied and some of their mechanical properties were evaluated. Young's modulus and maximum strength were measured by three-point bending test and tensile test using the Digital Image Correlation (DIC) technique. Adhesion tests, thermal analysis and microscopy were used to evaluate the fiber-matrix adhesion, which is very dependent on the sintering time. The composite material obtained had a Young's modulus of 14.2 GPa and ultimate strength of 165 MPa, which corresponds to approximately 24 times the modulus and six times the ultimate strength of pure RIFE. These results show that the RIFE composite, manufactured under specific conditions, has great potential to provide structural parts with a performance suitable for application in structural components. In this this study, glycerol content and its incorporation method on tensile and barrier properties of biodegradable films (BF) based on cassava starch were analyzed. ANOVA showed that the glycerol incorporation method did not influence the results (P > 0.05), however the glycerol content influenced significantly the tensile and barrier properties of the films (P < 0.05). Films prepared with lower glycerol content presented better tensile and barrier properties than films with higher content. Films were then prepared with addition of clay nanoparticles and their tensile and barrier properties and glass transition temperature were measured. ANOVA indicated that both glycerol and clay nanoparticles influenced significantly the tensile and barrier properties (P < 0.05), diminishing film permeability when clay nanoparticles were present, while the glass transition temperature was not influenced (P > 0.05). A broadband primary standard for thermal noise measurements is presented and its thermal and electromagnetic behavior is analyzed by means of analytical and numerical simulation techniques. It consists of a broadband termination connected to a 3.5mm coaxial airline partially immersed in liquid Nitrogen. The main innovative part of the device is the thermal bead between inner and outer conductors, designed for obtaining a proper thermal contact and to keep low both its contribution to the total thermal noise and its reflectivity. A sensitivity analysis is realized in order to fix the manufacturing tolerances for a proper performance in the range 10MHz¿26.5GHz.

The latest technology and architectural trends have significantly improved the use of a large variety of glass products in construction which, in function of their own characteristocs, allow to design and calculate structural glass elements under safety conditions. This paper presents the evaluation and analysis of the damping properties of rectangular laminated glass plates of 1.938 m x 0.876 m with different thickness depending on the number of PVB interlayers arranged. By means of numerical simulation and experimental verification, using modal analysis, natural frequencies and damping of the glass plates were calculated, both under free boundary conditions and operational conditions for the impact test equipment used in the experimental program, as the European standard UNE-EN 12600:2003 specifies.

In the framework of the ITER Control Breakdown Structure (CBS), Plant System Instrumentation & Control (I&C) defines the hardware and software required to control one or more plant systems [1]. For diagnostics, most of the complex Plant System I&C are to be delivered by ITER Domestic Agencies (DAs). As an example for the DAs, ITER Organization (IO) has developed several use cases for diagnostics Plant System I&C that fully comply with guidelines presented in the Plant Control Design Handbook (PCDH) [2]. One such use case is for neutron diagnostics, specifically the Fission Chamber (FC), which is responsible for delivering time-resolved measurements of neutron source strength and fusion power to aid in assessing the functional performance of ITER [3]. ITER will deploy four Fission Chamber units, each consisting of three individual FC detectors. Two of these detectors contain Uranium 235 for Neutron detection, while a third "dummy" detector will provide gamma and noise detection. The neutron flux from each MFC is measured by the three methods: . Counting Mode: measures the number of individual pulses and their location in the record. Pulse parameters (threshold and width) are user configurable. . Campbelling Mode (Mean Square Voltage): measures the RMS deviation in signal amplitude from its average value. .Current Mode: integrates the signal amplitude over the measurement period

The glass transition temperature and the second transition (the endothermic change between the glass transition and melting temperatures) of fructose were studied. The thermal history strongly affected both transitions of fructose. Storage for 10 days at 22degreesC increased the dynamic glass transition temperature from 16 to 25degreesC and decreased the second transition of fructose from 110 to 98degreesC in the first differential scanning calorimetric (DSC) scan. The amplitude of the second transition increased slightly with storage time and reached 260% of the first transition for vacuum oven dried samples. The effect of thermal history on the glass transition temperature of fructose can be removed by scanning the sample in a DSC to 130degreesC. The effects of water content, glucose and sucrose on the two transitions were also investigated.
