Ahead of the World Cup in Brazil the crucial question for the Swiss national coach is the nomination of the starting eleven central back pair. A fuzzy set Qualitative Comparative Analysis assesses the defensive performances of different Swiss central back pairs during the World Cup campaign (2011 – 2014). This analysis advises Ottmar Hitzfeld to nominate Steve von Bergen and Johan Djourou as the starting eleven central back pair. The alternative with a substantially weaker empirical validity would be Johan Djourou together with Phillippe Senderos. Furthermore, this paper aims to be a step forward in mainstream football analytics. It analyses the undervalued and understudied defense (Anderson and Sally 2012, Statsbomb 2013) by explaining collective defensive performances instead of assessments of individual player or team performances. However, a qualitatively (better defensive metrics) and quantitatively (more games) improved and extended data set would allow for a more sophisticated analysis of collective defensive performances.

Actors with joint beliefs in a decision-making process form coalitions in order to translate their goals into policy. Yet, coalitions are not formed in an institutional void, but rather institutions confer opportunities and constraints to actors. This paper studies the institutional conditions under which either coalition structures with a dominant coalition or with competing coalitions emerge. It takes into account three conditions, i.e. the degree of federalism of a project, its degree of Europeanisation and the openness of the pre-parliamentary phase of the decision-making process. The cross-sectoral comparison includes the 11 most important decision-making processes in Switzerland between 2001 and 2006 with a fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis. Results suggest that Europeanisation or an open pre-parliamentary phase lead to a dominant coalition, whereas only a specific combination of all three conditions is able to explain a structure with competing coalitions.

A land classification method was designed for the Community of Madrid (CM), which has lands suitable for either agriculture use or natural spaces. The process started from an extensive previous CM study that contains sets of land attributes with data for 122 types and a minimum-requirements method providing a land quality classification (SQ) for each land. Borrowing some tools from Operations Research (OR) and from Decision Science, that SQ has been complemented by an additive valuation method that involves a more restricted set of 13 representative attributes analysed using Attribute Valuation Functions to obtain a quality index, QI, and by an original composite method that uses a fuzzy set procedure to obtain a combined quality index, CQI, that contains relevant information from both the SQ and the QI methods.

Zadeh in 1975 [65] as an extension of type-1 fuzzy sets (FSs). Whereas for FSs the degree of membership of an element of a set is determined by a value in the interval [0, 1] , the degree of membership of an element for T2FSs is a fuzzy set in [0,1], that is, a T2FS is determined by a membership function μ : X → M, where M = [0, 1][0,1] is the set of functions from [0,1] to [0,1] (see [39], [42], [43], [61]). Later, many definitions, operations, properties and results known on FSs, have been generalized to T2FSs (e.g. see [39], [42], [43], [61]) by employing Zadeh’s Extension Principle [65] (see Theorem 1.1). However, as in any area of research, there are still many open problems which represent a challenge for anyone who wants to make a deep study in this field. Then, we have been dedicated to such challenge, making significant progress in this direction to “fill gaps” (close open problems) in the theory of T2FSs, especially on the properties of self-contradiction and N-self-contradiction, and on the operations of negations, t-norms (triangular norms) and t-conorms on T2FSs. Walker and Walker justify in [61] that the operations on Map(X,M) can be defined naturally from the operations onMand have the same properties. Therefore, we will work onM(study subject), and some subsets of M, as all the results are easily and directly extensible to Map(X,M). About the operation of negation, usually has been employed in the framework of T2FSs, a operation associated to standard negation on [0,1], but such operation does not satisfy the negation axioms on M. In this work, we introduce the axioms that a function inMshould satisfy to qualify as a type-2 negation and strong type-2 negation. Also, we define a operation on M associated to any suprajective negation on [0,1], and analyse, among others properties, if such operation is negation or strong negation on L (all normal and convex functions of M). Besides, we study the De Morgan’s laws, with respect to some binary operations on M. On the other hand, The properties of self-contradiction and N-self-contradiction have been extensively studied on FSs and on the Atanassov’s intuitionistic fuzzy sets (AIFSs). Thereon, in this research we begin the study of the mentioned properties on the framework of T2FSs. In this sense, we give the definitions about self-contradiction and N-self-contradiction on L, and establish the criteria to verify these properties on L. Respect to the t-norms and t-conorms, Walker et al. ([61], [63]) defined two families of binary operations on M and found that, under some conditions, these operations are t-norms or t-conorms on L. In this work we introduce more general binary operations on M than those given by Walker et al. and study which are the minimum conditions necessary for these operations satisfy each of the axioms of the t-norm and t-conorm.

This study analyzes the effect of organizational characteristics on the innovation project performance. This research applies fuzzy set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA) to a large sample of Spanish firms appearing in the Community Innovation survey (CIS). The results show that the combination of organizational innovation, firm size and cooperationwith national and, especially, international firms is a sufficient condition for the success of innovation projects within the organization. Evidence also suggests that variables such as the investment on R&D peremployee or the seniority of the company do not affect the success of innovation projects. These findings help complement some results in previous studies on innovation projects performance.

This study presents an empirical analysis of the determinants of firm and self-employed survival in the Spanish translation sector. In the midst of a global downturn firm and self-employed survival is a key factor for the progress of the economies and for a better and more stable future. The study presents, first of all, a review of the literature on translation, interpreting, career opportunities, and entrepreneurship, and firm survival. The following empirical analysis explores the combination of variables of human capital, contingency and economic investment that potentially drive translation and interpreting firms or self-employed entrepreneurs to survive. The study performs a comparative qualitative analysis with a fs/QCA methodology identifying nine combination of causes that lead to the outcome. The results contribute towards a better understanding of entrepreneur translators’ lifespan as they provide an empirical outlook on the different causal paths that predict the survival of those translation and interpreting firms or self-employed entrepreneurs. The last part concludes with the most relevant findings of this research study. With little literature on the topic of firm survival in the translation and interpreting sector the paper aims to fill this gap and make a valuable contribution to the current literature on translation-firm creation and firm and self-employed survival.

Although the recycling of municipal wastewater can play an important role in water supply security and ecosystem protection, the percentage of wastewater recycled is generally low and strikingly variable. Previous research has employed detailed case studies to examine the factors that contribute to recycling success but usually lacks a comparative perspective across cases. In this study, 25 water utilities in New South Wales, Australia, were compared using fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA). This research method applies binary logic and set theory to identify the minimal combinations of conditions that are necessary and/or sufficient for an outcome to occur within the set of cases analyzed. The influence of six factors (rainfall, population density, coastal or inland location, proximity to users; cost recovery and revenue for water supply services) was examined for two outcomes, agricultural use and "heavy" (i.e., commercial/municipal/industrial) use. Each outcome was explained by two different pathways, illustrating that different combinations of conditions are associated with the same outcome. Generally, while economic factors are crucial for heavy use, factors relating to water stress and geographical proximity matter most for agricultural reuse. These results suggest that policies to promote wastewater reuse may be most effective if they target uses that are most feasible for utilities and correspond to the local context. This work also makes a methodological contribution through illustrating the potential utility of fsQCA for understanding the complex drivers of performance in water recycling.

Market orientation (MO) and marketing performance measurement (MPM) are two of the most widespread strategic marketing concepts among practitioners. However, some have questioned the benefits of extensive investments in MO and MPM. More importantly, little is known about which combinations of MO and MPM are optimal in ensuring high business performance. To address this research gap, the authors analyze a unique data set of 628 firms with a novel method of configurational analysis: fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis. In line with prior research, the authors find that MO is an important determinant of business performance. However, to reap its benefits, managers need to complement it with appropriate MPM, the level and focus of which vary across firms. For example, whereas large firms and market leaders generally benefit from comprehensive MPM, small firms may benefit from measuring marketing performance only selectively or by focusing on particular dimensions of marketing performance. The study also finds that many of the highest-performing firms do not follow any of the particular best practices identified.

The paper gives an overview about the ongoing FP6-IST INFRAWEBS project and describes the main layers and software components embedded in an application oriented realisation framework. An important part of INFRAWEBS is a Semantic Web Unit (SWU) – a collaboration platform and interoperable middleware for ontology-based handling and maintaining of SWS. The framework provides knowledge about a specific domain and relies on ontologies to structure and exchange this knowledge to semantic service development modules. INFRAWEBS Designer and Composer are sub-modules of SWU responsible for creating Semantic Web Services using Case-Based Reasoning approach. The Service Access Middleware (SAM) is responsible for building up the communication channels between users and various other modules. It serves as a generic middleware for deployment of Semantic Web Services. This software toolset provides a development framework for creating and maintaining the full-life-cycle of Semantic Web Services with specific application support.

An approximate number is an ordered pair consisting of a (real) number and an error bound, briefly error, which is a (real) non-negative number. To compute with approximate numbers the arithmetic operations on errors should be well-known. To model computations with errors one should suitably define and study arithmetic operations and order relations over the set of non-negative numbers. In this work we discuss the algebraic properties of non-negative numbers starting from familiar properties of real numbers. We focus on certain operations of errors which seem not to have been sufficiently studied algebraically. In this work we restrict ourselves to arithmetic operations for errors related to addition and multiplication by scalars. We pay special attention to subtractability-like properties of errors and the induced “distance-like” operation. This operation is implicitly used under different names in several contemporary fields of applied mathematics (inner subtraction and inner addition in interval analysis, generalized Hukuhara difference in fuzzy set theory, etc.) Here we present some new results related to algebraic properties of this operation.
