This paper develops fuzzy methods for control of the rotary inverted pendulum, an underactuated mechanical system. Two control laws are presented, one for swing up and another for the stabilization. The pendulum is swung up from the vertical down stable position to the upward unstable position in a controlled trajectory. The rules for the swing up are heuristically written such that each swing results in greater energy build up. The stabilization is achieved by mapping a stabilizing LQR control law to two fuzzy inference engines, which reduces the computational load compared with using a single fuzzy inference engine. The robustness of the balancing control is tested by attaching a bottle of water at the tip of the pendulum.

A decision support system (DSS) was implemented based on a fuzzy logic inference system (FIS) to provide assistance in dose alteration of Duodopa infusion in patients with advanced Parkinson’s disease, using data from motor state assessments and dosage. Three-tier architecture with an object oriented approach was used. The DSS has a web enabled graphical user interface that presents alerts indicating non optimal dosage and states, new recommendations, namely typical advice with typical dose and statistical measurements. One data set was used for design and tuning of the FIS and another data set was used for evaluating performance compared with actual given dose. Overall goodness-of-fit for the new patients (design data) was 0.65 and for the ongoing patients (evaluation data) 0.98. User evaluation is now ongoing. The system could work as an assistant to clinical staff for Duodopa treatment in advanced Parkinson’s disease.

Cruise control in motor vehicles enhances safe and efficient driving by maintaining a constant speed at a preset level. Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) is the latest development in cruise control. It controls engine throttle position and braking to maintain a safe distance behind a vehicle in front by responding to the speed of this vehicle, thus providing a safer and more relaxing driving environment. ACC can be further developed by including the look-ahead method of predicting environmental factors such as wind speed and road slope. The conventional analytical control methods for adaptive cruise control can generate good results; however they are difficult to design and computationally expensive. In order to achieve a robust, less computationally expensive, and at the same time more natural human-like speed control, intelligent control techniques can be used. This paper presents an Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) based on ACC systems that reduces the energy consumption of the vehicle and improves its efficiency. The Adaptive Cruise Control Look-Ahead (ACC-LA) system works as follows: It calculates the energy consumption of the vehicle under combined dynamic loads like wind drag, slope, kinetic energy and rolling friction using road data, and it includes a look-ahead strategy to predict the future road slope. The cruise control system adaptively controls the vehicle speed based on the preset speed and the predicted future slope information. By using the ANFIS method, the ACC-LA is made adaptive under different road conditions (slope angle and wind direction and speed). The vehicle was tested using the adaptive cruise control look-ahead energy management system, the results compared with the vehicle running the same test but without the adaptive cruise control look-ahead energy management system. The evaluation outcome indicates that the vehicle speed was efficiently controlled through the look-ahead methodology based upon the driving cycle, and that the average fuel consumption was reduced by 3%.

Traditional Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA) utilizes the Risk Priority Number (RPN) ranking system to evaluate the risk level of failures, to rank failures, and to prioritize actions. Although this method is simple, it suffers from several shortcomings. In this paper, use of fuzzy inference techniques for RPN determination in an attempt to overcome the weaknesses associated with the traditional RPN ranking system is investigated. However, the fuzzy RPN model, suffers from the combinatorial rule explosion problem. As a result, a generic rule reduction approach, i.e. the Guided Rule Reduction System (GRRS), is proposed to reduce the number of rules that need to be provided by users during the fuzzy RPN modeling process. The proposed approach is evaluated using real-world case studies pertaining to semiconductor manufacturing. The results are analyzed, and implications of the proposed approach are discussed.

In this paper, the problem of maintaining the (global) monotonicity and local monotonicity properties between the input(s) and the output of an FIS model is addressed. This is known as the monotone fuzzy modeling problem. In our previous work, this problem has been tackled by developing some mathematical conditions for an FIS model to observe the monotonicity property. These mathematical conditions are used as a set of governing equations for undertaking FIS modeling problems, and have been extended to some advanced FIS modeling techniques. Here, we examine an alternative to the monotone fuzzy modeling problem by introducing a monotonicity index. The monotonicity index is employed as an approximate indicator to measure the fulfillment of an FIS model to the monotonicity property. It allows the FIS model to be constructed using an optimization method, or be tuned to achieve a better performance, without knowing the exact mathematical conditions of the FIS model to satisfy the monotonicity property. Besides, the monotonicity index can be extended to FIS modeling that involves the local monotonicity problem. We also analyze the relationship between the FIS model and its monotonicity property fulfillment, as well as derived mathematical conditions, using the Monte Carlo method.

Healthcare plays an important role in promoting the general health and well-being of people around the world. The difficulty in healthcare data classification arises from the uncertainty and the high-dimensional nature of the medical data collected. This paper proposes an integration of fuzzy standard additive model (SAM) with genetic algorithm (GA), called GSAM, to deal with uncertainty and computational challenges. GSAM learning process comprises three continual steps: rule initialization by unsupervised learning using the adaptive vector quantization clustering, evolutionary rule optimization by GA and parameter tuning by the gradient descent supervised learning. Wavelet transformation is employed to extract discriminative features for high-dimensional datasets. GSAM becomes highly capable when deployed with small number of wavelet features as its computational burden is remarkably reduced. The proposed method is evaluated using two frequently-used medical datasets: the Wisconsin breast cancer and Cleveland heart disease from the UCI Repository for machine learning. Experiments are organized with a five-fold cross validation and performance of classification techniques are measured by a number of important metrics: accuracy, F-measure, mutual information and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve. Results demonstrate the superiority of the GSAM compared to other machine learning methods including probabilistic neural network, support vector machine, fuzzy ARTMAP, and adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system. The proposed approach is thus helpful as a decision support system for medical practitioners in the healthcare practice.

Efficient energy management in hybrid vehicles is the key for reducing fuel consumption and emissions. To capitalize on the benefits of using PHEVs (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles), an intelligent energy management system is developed and evaluated in this paper. Models of vehicle engine, air conditioning, powertrain, and hybrid electric drive system are first developed. The effect of road parameters such as bend direction and road slope angle as well as environmental factors such as wind (direction and speed) and thermal conditions are also modeled. Due to the nonlinear and complex nature of the interactions between PHEV-Environment-Driver components, a soft computing based intelligent management system is developed using three fuzzy logic controllers. The crucial fuzzy engine controller within the intelligent energy management system is made adaptive by using a hybrid multi-layer adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system with genetic algorithm optimization. For adaptive learning, a number of datasets were created for different road conditions and a hybrid learning algorithm based on the least squared error estimate using the gradient descent method was proposed. The proposed adaptive intelligent energy management system can learn while it is running and makes proper adjustments during its operation. It is shown that the proposed intelligent energy management system is improving the performance of other existing systems. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd.

This paper proposes a combination of fuzzy standard additive model (SAM) with wavelet features for medical diagnosis. Wavelet transformation is used to reduce the dimension of high-dimensional datasets. This helps to improve the convergence speed of supervised learning process of the fuzzy SAM, which has a heavy computational burden in high-dimensional data. Fuzzy SAM becomes highly capable when deployed with wavelet features. This combination remarkably reduces its computational training burden. The performance of the proposed methodology is examined for two frequently used medical datasets: the lump breast cancer and heart disease. Experiments are deployed with a five-fold cross validation. Results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method compared to other machine learning methods including probabilistic neural network, support vector machine, fuzzy ARTMAP, and adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system. Faster convergence but higher accuracy shows a win-win solution of the proposed approach.

Traffic signal controlling is one of the solutions to reduce the traffic congestion in cities. To set appropriate green times for traffic signal lights, we have applied Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) method in traffic signal controllers. ANFIS traffic signal controller is used for controlling traffic congestion of a single intersection with the purpose of minimizing travel delay time. The ANFIS traffic controller is an intelligent controller that learns to set an appropriate green time for each phase of traffic signal lights at the start of the phase and based on the traffic information. The controller uses genetic algorithm to tune ANFIS parameters during learning time. The results of the experiments show higher performance of the ANFIS traffic signal controller compared to three other traffic controllers that are developed as benchmarks. One of the benchmarks is GA-FLC (Araghi et al., 2014), next one is a fixed-FLC, and a fixed-time controller with three different values for green phase. Results show the higher performance of ANFIS controller.

Traffic congestion in urban roads is one of the biggest challenges of 21 century. Despite a myriad of research work in the last two decades, optimization of traffic signals in network level is still an open research problem. This paper for the first time employs advanced cuckoo search optimization algorithm for optimally tuning parameters of intelligent controllers. Neural Network (NN) and Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) are two intelligent controllers implemented in this study. For the sake of comparison, we also implement Q-learning and fixed-time controllers as benchmarks. Comprehensive simulation scenarios are designed and executed for a traffic network composed of nine four-way intersections. Obtained results for a few scenarios demonstrate the optimality of trained intelligent controllers using the cuckoo search method. The average performance of NN, ANFIS, and Q-learning controllers against the fixed-time controller are 44%, 39%, and 35%, respectively.

This paper introduces an automated medical data classification method using wavelet transformation (WT) and interval type-2 fuzzy logic system (IT2FLS). Wavelet coefficients, which serve as inputs to the IT2FLS, are a compact form of original data but they exhibits highly discriminative features. The integration between WT and IT2FLS aims to cope with both high-dimensional data challenge and uncertainty. IT2FLS utilizes a hybrid learning process comprising unsupervised structure learning by the fuzzy c-means (FCM) clustering and supervised parameter tuning by genetic algorithm. This learning process is computationally expensive, especially when employed with high-dimensional data. The application of WT therefore reduces computational burden and enhances performance of IT2FLS. Experiments are implemented with two frequently used medical datasets from the UCI Repository for machine learning: the Wisconsin breast cancer and Cleveland heart disease. A number of important metrics are computed to measure the performance of the classification. They consist of accuracy, sensitivity, specificity and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve. Results demonstrate a significant dominance of the wavelet-IT2FLS approach compared to other machine learning methods including probabilistic neural network, support vector machine, fuzzy ARTMAP, and adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system. This paper introduces an approach to classify EEG signals using wavelet transform and a fuzzy standard additive model (FSAM) with tabu search learning mechanism. Wavelet coefficients are ranked based on statistics of the Wilcoxon test. The most informative coefficients are assembled to form a feature set that serves as inputs to the tabu-FSAM. Two benchmark datasets, named Ia and Ib, downloaded from the brain-computer interface (BCI) competition II are employed for the experiments. Classification performance is evaluated using accuracy, mutual information, Gini coefficient and F-measure. Widely-used classifiers, including feedforward neural network, support vector machine, k-nearest neighbours, ensemble learning Adaboost and adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system, are also implemented for comparisons. The proposed tabu-FSAM method considerably dominates the competitive classifiers, and outperforms the best performance on the Ia and Ib datasets reported in the BCI competition II.

An optimal design of Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) traffic signal controller is presented in this paper. The proposed controller aims to adjust a set of green times for traffic lights in a single intersection with the purpose of minimizing travel delay time and traffic congestion. The ANFIS controller is trained, to learned how to set green times for each traffic phase. This intelligent controller uses the Cuckoo Search (CS) algorithm to tune its parameters during the learning pried. Evaluating the performance of the proposed controller in comparison with the performance of a FLS controller (FLC) with predefined rules and membership functions, and also three fixed-Time controllers, illustrates the better performance of the optimal ANFIS controller against the other benchmark controllers.

An approach to EEG signal classification for brain-computer interface (BCI) application using fuzzy standard additive model is introduced in this paper. The Wilcoxon test is employed to rank wavelet coefficients. Top ranking wavelets are used to form a feature set that serves as inputs to the fuzzy classifiers. Experiments are carried out using two benchmark datasets, Ia and Ib, downloaded from the BCI competition II. Prevalent classifiers including feedforward neural network, support vector machine, k-nearest neighbours, ensemble learning Adaboost and adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system are also implemented for comparisons. Experimental results show the dominance of the proposed method against competing approaches.
