Romance Languages Building

State Street side of building (front). William L. Jenney, architect. Originally University Museum, built 1880-1881. Roof replaced 1894. Museum moved in 1928. Housed Department of Romance Languages after 1928. Building razed in 1958. Image includes Alumni Memorial Hall, Graduate Library, Old University Hall, Chemistry Building, and Observatory. West Quad and Union from the air

Located behind the Michigan Union bordering on Madison and Thompson Sts. The first unit was the Allen-Rumsey House (in commemoration of John Allen and Elisha Rumsey), constructed in 1937, and designed by Lane, Davenport & Meyer to coordinate with the addition to the Union, also being constructed in 1937. West Quadrangle was added in 1939, contained seven "houses," and is connected to the Union. Upon completion in 1939, the Allen-Rumsey unit became a part of West Quad.

Hill Auditorium

Kahn & Wilby, architect. J.L. Stuart, contractor. Built 1913. Bulk of cost from the will of Regent Arthur Hill. Seated 4300 when built. Housed the original Frieze Memorial Organ from 1913 to 1928. When organ was replaced, name was retained.

Catherine Street Hospital

The eastern-most of two similar buildings built in 1891 on Catherine St. The western housed the Homeopathic Hospital from 1891-1900. This building housed the Allopathic Hospital (called Uiversity Hospital) from 1891-1900. (The Homeopathic Hospital had a straight north facade; this building a rounded north facade). From 1900-1925 it housed the Surgical Ward; 1925-1944 the East Convalescent Ward; 1944-1950, the Rapid Treatment Center; 1950-1965, the Institute for Social Research. It was removed in 1965. Large buildings east to west: Psychopathic Hospital; Surgical Ward; Medical Ward. On verso: Gift of Sam Sturgis, Jan. 1972 ...

York and Sawyer, architects. Given to the university by William W. Cook, the four buildings comprising the Law Quadrangle with their construction dates are: the Lawyers Club, 1924; the John P. Cook Dormitory, 1930; the Legal Research Building, 1931, and Hutchins Hall, 1933. The Legal Research Building includes the original library.
