In this article we draw attention to the fact that the documentation relating to the decision to colonize Brazil, as well as the early stages of colonization, comprising two interpretations about the reasons to occupy, populate and organize the production on American soil. The Brazilian historiography joined the explanation of that pressure from European nations led to the Portuguese crown decided on an occupation more effectively. But without ignoring this reason, the documentation allows to take into account their own historical circumstances created by the development of trade. These are essential conditions for the emergence and effectiveness of the proposal to colonize Brazil. Thus, when considering only the pressure of European nations the Brazilian historiography remained on the surface of events. Its necessary to take into account the documentation on what it allows to grasp the colonial process as a historical phenomenon and not just as an act of will.

The history of historiography in recent decades has the breathing space needed in the concerns of historians and has been transformed into a research field with its own issues. Uploaded this in perspective, this paper aims to understand how aspects of the theory of history and methodology have been addressed by Afonso de Escragnolle Taunay (1876-1958). We selected the letters exchanged by the author, the speeches of acceptance at the ABL, some articles and books produced by Taunay in the 1930s. In the first decades of the twentieth century, when it sought to define the historiography and its limits in both the literature and social science sources, the subjectivity is presented as the final decision making of the author, especially those related to the new site production Taunay, the Brazilian Academy of Letters.

Historiography shows that the historical moment is inscribed in the culture of every time and place. Thus, it allows us to identify within the different modes of cultural production - therefore in the literature of a particular time, our research object - expressions of historical aspects. Furthermore, it is important that we know our own history, so that such knowledge help us to learn how to build, individually and collectively, more equitable societies. The objective of this bibliographic research nature was to identify historical aspects of the nineteenth century Brazilian education printed in O Ateneu (The Athenaeum), written in 1888 by Raul Pompia. We sought for narrative passages that could reveal usual educational practices in the time context of our work in order to better understand a historical period that contributed to the establishment of our current education
