People of Western Kordofan (Sudan) are endowed with a deep knowledge concerning the use of wild plants. Tubers of Raphionacme splendens Schl. subspecies splendens Flickr (family Apocynaceae), locally known as Elfayo, are used as a food reserve during times of famine or poor harvest. The aim of this study was to analyze the nutritional composition and antioxidant capacity of root tubers of R. splendens. Samples were collected from South-West Kordofan. Analyses included determination of moisture, carbohydrate, crude protein, fat, fibre, ash, minerals, vitamin C, amino acids and fatty acids composition. Antioxidant activity was determined by the DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) and ABTS (2.2’-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) assays. The total phenolic content was also assessed. The results, which are referred to as (%) dry weight, showed that the tubers contained 3.2% protein, 18% carbohydrate, 0.5% lipid, 2.4% crude fibre, 3.5% ash, 79.2% moisture and gross energy 101.7 kJ/g. The total amino acids were 10776 mg/100g where the essential amino acids represented 28.2%. The more abundant essential amino acids were leucine (792mg/100g), isoleucine (712mg/100g) and threonine (536mg/100g). Methionine and lysine were the limiting amino acids. Minerals were potassium (259mg/100g), calcium (183mg/100g), magnesium (64mg/100g), phosphorus (37mg/100g), copper (3.6mg/100g), manganese (2.4mg/100g), zinc (1.8mg/100g) and iron (1.2mg/100g). Total saturated fatty acids were 45.6% whereas total unsaturated fatty acids were 54.4%. Oleic acid (32.56%) and palmitic acid (30.23%) were the most abundant fatty acids. Tubers displayed good antioxidant activity with IC50 values 0.987 and 1.559mg/mL against DPPH and ABTS radicals respectively. Vitamin C was 31.5mg/100g and total phenolic content was 60mg gallic acid equivalent (GAE) per 100g dry sample and they could be the main contributor to the antioxidant capacity of the tubers. In conclusion, the results of this study suggested that tubers of R. splendens could have beneficial effect for food and/or nutraceutical application for normal growth and adequate protection against diseases associated with reactions of free radicals.

The use of environmentally friendly products increased the interest in renewable resources as alternatives to petrochemical products. Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are examples of such promising products, as they are biodegradable polymers with numerous potential applications. PHA production approach consists of using an open mixed microbial culture (MMC) and inexpensive feedstocks (waste or industry byproducts feedstock). The PHA process generally comprises three stages: (1) acidogenic fermentation (AF) stage (conversion of organic carbon into fermentation products); (2) culture selection stage (enrichment in PHA-storing organisms by applying Feast and Famine regime); and (3) PHA production stage (PHA accumulation up to the culture’s maximum capacity). AF of protein-rich residues results in ammonia-rich fermented streams, which can be presented as a challenge for the PHA production stage. The presence of ammonia during this stage may induce organisms to grow instead of producing PHAs. For this reason, the assessment of the effect of a high content of ammonia on PHA production it is the utmost importance. The main goal of the current project is to select a MMC enriched in PHA-accumulating organisms in conditions of high ammonia content and to evaluate the effects of ammonia presence during PHA accumulation. The culture was selected applying the Feast & Famine strategy, and fed, firstly, using a synthetic mixture of VFAs and later using a fermented stream obtained from the fermentation of protein-rich raw materials. The selected culture could accumulate up to 24% PHA per VSS with the synthetic mixture of VFAs and up to 29% for the real fermented stream. The PHA accumulation resulted in different production in the presence and absence of ammonia. Regarding to the synthetic feed, 59%wt. PHA (VSS basis) in the absence of ammonia, and 55%wt. (VSS basis) in the presence, were obtained. For the real feed, the PHA content was about 40%wt. (VSS basis) in both reactors.

Persistent food insecurity and famines have continued to significantly shape the development policies of Ethiopia for decades. Over the decades, frequent famines caused not only the death of hundreds of thousands of victims but also significantly contributed to two revolutions that swept away the Haile Selassie and Derg regimes, as well as significantly taxing the legitimacy of the incumbent regime. As a result, agriculture and food security have become increasingly the top policy priorities for all political regimes in Ethiopia. However, the development policies of the ruling elites of Ethiopia have consistently failed to transform backward agriculture and ensure food security. The failures of the development policies of the Ethiopian governments over the years were attributed to several factors. Ethiopian authoritarian politics, centralized rule with a lack of transparency and accountability; the isolation of peasants from the development and governance process, and the lack of coherent agricultural development strategies that invest in peasant agriculture and create synergy among sectors are identified as key issues that have contributed to the persistence of food insecurity in the country. The literature on the failure of Ethiopia's political regimes to address food insecurity and famine has two major gaps that this study aims to fill. First, the cumulative and path-dependent food security and agricultural development policy environment were not adequately considered. Second, the strategy of extraversion by subsequent political regimes to use external support as a relief to prevent the famine-induced political crisis. This study used a mixed approach to collect data and present the evolution of the interplays of development policies and food security in three regimes within the context of international food security discourses. This study found out how the historical patterns of approaches of Ethiopia’s regimes to development and governance led to frequent famines and persistent food insecurity.

The rate at which petroleum based plastics are being produced, used and thrown away is increasing every year because of an increase in the global population. Polyhydroxyalkanoates can represent a valid alternative to petroleum based plastics. They are biodegradable polymers that can be produced by some microorganisms as intracellular reserves. The actual problem is represented by the production cost of these bioplastics, which is still not competitive if compared to the one of petroleum based plastics. Mixed microbial cultures can be fed with substrates obtained from the acidogenic fermentation of carbon rich wastes, such as cheese whey, municipal effluents and various kinds of food wastes, that have a low or sometimes even inexisting cost and in this way wastes can be valorized instead of being discharged. The process consists of three phases: acidogenic fermentation in which the substrate is obtained, culture selection in which a PHA-storing culture is selected and enriched eliminating organisms that do not show this property and accumulation, in which the culture is fed until reaching the maximum storage capacity. In this work the possibility to make the process cheaper was explored trying to couple the selection and accumulation steps and a halotolerant culture collected from seawater was used and fed with an artificially salted synthetic substrated made of an aqueous solution containing a mixture of volatile fatty acids in order to explore also if its performance can allow to use it to treat substrates derived from saline effluents, as these streams cannot be treated properly by bacterias found in activated sludge plants due to inhibition caused by high salt concentrations. Generating and selling the produced PHAs obtained from these bacterias it could be possible to lower, nullify or even overcome the costs associated to the new section of a treating plant dedicated to saline effluents.
