Gamma-band (25-140 Hz) oscillations are ubiquitous in mammalian forebrain structures involved in sensory processing, attention, learning and memory. The optic tectum (01) is the central structure in a midbrain network that participates critically in controlling spatial attention. In this review, we summarize recent advances in characterizing a neural circuit in this midbrain network that generates large amplitude, space-specific, gamma oscillations in the avian OT, both in vivo and in vitro. We describe key physiological and pharmacological mechanisms that produce and regulate the structure of these oscillations. The extensive similarities between midbrain gamma oscillations in birds and those in the neocortex and hippocampus of mammals, offer important insights into the functional significance of a midbrain gamma oscillatory code.

Resumen: Este trabajo explora los diferentes modos en los cuales la figura y la obra de Franz Liszt fueron recepcionadas en la Rusia del siglo XIX por teóricos y compositores. A partir de las visitas que el compositor húngaro realizó a Rusia durante la década de 1840, su figura fue utilizada por el crítico Vladimir Stasov para caracterizar y legitimizar a través de un relato cargado de mitos la tradición musical que recién nacía en Rusia. Esta imagen condicionó y limitó durante casi todo el siglo XX el acercamiento al estudio de la música de ese país. La obra de los compositores modernistas en Rusia, sin embargo, demuestra que la recepción de Liszt, y así el devenir de la música rusa del siglo XIX, estuvo bastante lejos de la caracterización canónica propuesta por Stasov.

In this paper, a reliable technique for calculating angular frequencies of nonlinear oscillators is developed. The new algorithm offers a promising approach by constructing a Hamiltonian for the nonlinear oscillator. Some illustrative examples are given. (C) 2002 Published by Elsevier Science Ltd.

A non-contact optical method, consisting of a projecting grating technique for the relative measurement of a surface, and a technique of absolute measurement at a fixed point on the surface, are applied to measure the free surface vibration in a liquid bridge of half floating zone with small typical scale of a few of mm for emphasizing the thermocapillary effect in comparison with the effect of buoyancy. The radii variations in both longitudinal and azimuthal directions are obtained, and, then, the feature of surface wave could be analyzed in detail. The results show that there are values of principal oscillatory frequencies at different positions of free surface. The amplitudes of surface waves in longitudinal and azimuthal directions are several mum and several tenths of mum in order of magnitude. The phase of two-dimensional surface waves is different at different height for fixed cross section or at different azimuthal angle for fixed height. The wave features are discussed for the cases of typical parameter ranges.

During a 25-hour hydrographic times series at two stations near the head of Monterey Submarine Canyon, an internal tide was observed with an amplitude of 80 to 115 m in water depths of 120 and 220 m respectively. These large oscillations produced daily variations in hydrographic and chemical parameters that were of the same magnitude as seasonal variations in Monterey Bay. Computed velocities associated with the internal tide were on the order of 10 em/sec, and this tidally induced circulation may have a significant role in the exchange of deep water between Monterey Submarine Canyon and the open ocean. O primeiro volume foi editado em 1832 e o segundo em 1837, após a morte do autor, fato que contribuiu para a pouco acurada nomenclatura em português verificada no segundo volume, conforme afirma Borba de Moraes. A grande importância do trabalho de Pohl residiu na descrição de Goiás, à época, uma parte do Brasil quase desconhecida para os cientistas estrangeiros. Seu texto contém descrições sobre a arquitetura colonial e do século XIX. Pohl também produziu um atlas que complementou, por meio de belas ilustrações, o trabalho contido nesses dois volumes. Estes, especialmente se acompanhados do atlas, são um trabalho mais raro do que os relativos às viagens de Martins
