Pattern recognition methods have been successfully applied in several functional neuroimaging studies. These methods can be used to infer cognitive states, so-called brain decoding. Using such approaches, it is possible to predict the mental state of a subject or a stimulus class by analyzing the spatial distribution of neural responses. In addition it is possible to identify the regions of the brain containing the information that underlies the classification. The Support Vector Machine (SVM) is one of the most popular methods used to carry out this type of analysis. The aim of the current study is the evaluation of SVM and Maximum uncertainty Linear Discrimination Analysis (MLDA) in extracting the voxels containing discriminative information for the prediction of mental states. The comparison has been carried out using fMRI data from 41 healthy control subjects who participated in two experiments, one involving visual-auditory stimulation and the other based on bimanual fingertapping sequences. The results suggest that MLDA uses significantly more voxels containing discriminative information (related to different experimental conditions) to classify the data. On the other hand, SVM is more parsimonious and uses less voxels to achieve similar classification accuracies. In conclusion, MLDA is mostly focused on extracting all discriminative information available, while SVM extracts the information which is sufficient for classification. (C) 2009 Elsevier Inc. The outflow-concentration-time profiles for lignocaine (lidocaine) and its metabolites have been measured after bolus impulse administration of [C-14]lignocaine into the perfused rat liver. Livers from female Sprague-Dawley rats were perfused in a once-through fashion with red-blood-cell-free Krebs-Henseleit buffer containing 0 or 2% bovine serum albumin. Perfusate flow rates of 20 and 30 mL min(-1) were used and both normal and retrograde flow directions were employed. Significant amounts of metabolite were detected in the effluent perfusate soon after lignocaine injection. The early appearance of metabolite contributed to bimodal outflow profiles observed for total C-14 radioactivity. The lignocaine outflow profiles were well characterized by the two-compartment dispersion model, with efflux rate << influx rate. The profiles for lignocaine metabolites were also characterized in terms of a simplified two-compartment dispersion model. Lignocaine was found to be extensively metabolized under the experimental conditions with the hepatic availability ranging between 0.09 and 0.18. Generally lignocaine and metabolite availability showed no significant change with alterations in perfusate flow rate from 20 to 30 mt min(-1) or protein content from 0 to 2%. A significant increase in lignocaine availability occurred when 1200 mu M unlabelled lignocaine was added to the perfusate. Solute mean transit times generally decreased with increasing flow rate and with increasing perfusate protein content. The results confirm that lignocaine pharmacokinetics in the liver closely follow the predictions of the well-stirred model. The increase in lignocaine availability when 1200 mu M unlabelled lignocaine was added to the perfusate is consistent with saturation of the hydroxylation metabolic pathways of lignocaine metabolism.

Aim: To provide new sustainable in vivo models of ventricular fibrillation in rabbits. Methods: New Zealand rabbits were submitted to anaesthesia and mechanical ventilation. after which ventricular fibrillation was induced through electrical stimulation (for 2 min at 100 Hz, with 2-ms pulses, 10 mA. and 10V) directly to the heart. To that end, the animals were divided into two groups: right ventricle (n = 11) and left ventricle (n = 11). In group right ventricle, the thoracic cavity was exposed, and a catheter was introduced into the right ventricle via the right jugular vein. in group left ventricle, the thorax remained closed, and the catheter was introduced into the left ventricle via the left common carotid artery (cervical access). Results: Sustained ventricular fibrillation was achieved in 100% of group right ventricle rabbits (n = 11 and in 82% of group left ventricle rabbits (n = 9). Conclusion: Both models proved appropriate for achieving sustained ventricular fibrillation. However, in view of the invasiveness of the procedure adopted in group right ventricle, the experimental conditions used in group left ventricle seemed more physiological and more effective in inducing sustained ventricular fibrillation. Our objective is to verify the modulatory effects of bromazepam on EEG theta absolute power when subjects were submitted to a visuomotor task (i.e., car driver task). Sample was composed of 14 students (9 males and 5 females), right handed, with ages varying between 23 and 42 years (mean = 32.5 +/- 9.5), absence of mental or physical impairments, no psychoactive or psychotropic substance use and no neuromuscular disorders (screened by a clinical examination). The results showed an interaction between condition and electrodes (p=0.034) in favor of F8 electrode compared with F7 in both experimental conditions (t-test; p=0.001). Additionally, main effects were observed for condition (p=0.001), period (p=0.001) and electrodes (p=0.031) in favor of F4 electrode compared with F3. In conclusion, Br 6 mg of bromazepam may interfere in sensorimotor processes in the task performance in an unpredictable scenario allowing that certain visuospatial factors were predominant. Therefore, the results may reflect that bromazepam effects influence the performance of the involved areas because of the acquisition and integration of sensory stimuli processes until the development of a motor behavior based on the same stimuli. This study investigated the effects of bromazepam on qEEG when 14 healthy subjects were asked to perform a visuomotor task (i.e., motor vehicle driving task). The subjects were exposed to two experimental conditions: the placebo (PL) and 6 mg of bromazepam (Br 6 mg), following a randomized, double-blind design on different days. Specifically, we observe absolute power extracted from qEEG data for theta band. We expected to see a decrease in absolute theta power in the temporal and parietal areas due to the influence of bromazepam for the experimental group when compared with the placebo group. We found a main effect for the condition factor for electrodes T3, T4, P3 and P4. We also observed a main effect for the period factor for electrodes P3 and P4. We observed that the ingestion of 6 mg of bromazepam induces different patterns in theta power at the temporal and parietal sites. We concluded that 6 mg of bromazepam was an important factor in the fluctuation of the activities in the temporal and parietal areas. We then hypothesize about the specific role of this drug during the execution of a visuomotor task and within the sensorimotor integration process. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. Objectives. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of thermal and mechanical cycling alone or in combination, on the flexural strength of ceramic and metallic frameworks cast in gold alloy or titanium. Methods. Metallic frameworks (25 mm x 3 mm x 0.5 mm) (N = 96) cast in gold alloy or commercial pure titanium (Ti cp) were obtained using acrylic templates. They were airborne particle-abraded with 150 mu m aluminum oxide at the central area of the frameworks (8 mm x 3 mm). Bonding agent and opaque were applied on the particle-abraded surfaces and the corresponding ceramic for each metal was fired onto them. The thickness of the ceramic layer was standardized by positioning the frameworks in a metallic template (height: I mm). The specimens from each ceramic-metal combination (N = 96, n = 12 per group) were randomly assigned into four experimental fatigue conditions, namely water storage at 37 degrees C for 24 h (control group), thermal cycling (3000 cycles, between 4 and 55 degrees C, dwell time: 10 s), mechanical cycling (20,000 cycles under 10 N load, immersion in distilled water at 37 degrees C) and, thermal and mechanical cycling. A flexural strength test was performed in a universal testing machine (crosshead speed: 1.5 mm/min). Data were statistically analyzed using two-way ANOVA and Tukey`s test (alpha = 0.05). Results. The mean flexural strength values for the ceramic-gold alloy combination (55 +/- 7.2MPa) were significantly higher than those of the ceramic-Ti cp combination (32 +/- 6.7 MPa) regardless of the fatigue conditions performed (p < 0.05). Mechanical and thermo-mechanical fatigue decreased the flexural strength results significantly for both ceramic-gold alloy (52 +/- 6.6 and 53 +/- 5.6 MPa, respectively) and ceramic-Ti cp combinations (29 +/- 6.8 and 29 +/- 6.8 MPa, respectively) compared to the control group (58 +/- 7.8 and 39 SA MPa, for gold and Ti cp, respectively) (p < 0.05) (Tukey`s test). While ceramic-Ti cp combinations failed adhesively at the metal-opaque interface, gold alloy frameworks exhibited a residue of ceramic material on the surface in all experimental groups. Significance. Mechanical and thermo-mechanical fatigue conditions decreased the flexural strength values for both ceramic-gold alloy and ceramic-Ti cp combinations with the results being significantly lower for the latter in all experimental conditions. Delta 9-THC is a component of Cannabis sativa that increases food intake in animals and humans, an effect prevented by selective CB1 receptor antagonists. Cannabidiol (CBD) is another constituent of this plant that promotes several opposite neuropharmacological effects compared to Delta 9-THC. CBD mechanisms of action are still not clear, but under specific experimental conditions it can antagonize the effects of cannabinoid agonists, block the reuptake of anandamide and act as an agonist of 5-HT1A receptors. Since both the cannabinoid and serotoninergic systems have been implicated in food intake control, the aim of the present work was to investigate the effects caused by CBD on hyperphagia induced by agonists of CB1 or 5-HT1A receptors. Fed or fasted Wistar rats received intraperitoneal (i.p.) injections of CBD (1, 10 and 20 mg/kg) and food intake was measured 30 min later for 1 h. Moreover, additional fed or fasted groups received, after pretreatment with CBD (20 mg/kg) or vehicle, i.p. administration of vehicle, a CBI receptor agonist WIN55,212-2 (2 mg/kg) or a 5-HT1A receptor agonist 8-OH-DPAT (1 mg/kg) and were submitted to the food intake test for 1 h. CBD by itself did not change food intake in fed or fasted rats. However, it prevented the hyperphagic effects induced by WIN55,212-2 or 8-OH-DPAT. These results show that CBD can interfere with food intake changes induced by a CB1 or 5-HT1A receptor agonist, suggesting that its role as a possible food intake regulator should be further investigate. The endocannabinoid system includes important signaling molecules that are involved in several homeostatic and neuroendocrine functions. In the present study, we evaluated the effects of the type 1 cannabinoid (CB(1)) receptor antagonist, rimonabant (10 mg/kg, p.o.), on hormone secretion, neuronal activation and mRNA expression in the hypothalamus following isotonic (I-) or hypertonic (H-) extracellular volume expansion (EVE). The total nitrate content in the PVN and SON was also assessed under the same experimental conditions. Our results showed that OT and AVP plasma concentrations were increased in response to H-EVE, while decreased AVP levels were found following I-EVE. Accordingly, both I- and H-EVE stimulated oxytocinergic neuronal activation, as evidenced by the increased number of c-Fos/OT double labeled neurons in the hypothalamus. The vasopressinergic cells of the PVN and SON, however, were only activated in response to H-EVE. Furthermore, increased amounts of both AVP and OT mRNAs were found in the hypothalamus following EVE. Pretreatment with rimonabant significantly potentiated hormone secretion and also vasopressinergic and oxytocinergic neuronal activation induced by EVE, although decreased AVP and OT mRNA expression was found in the hypothalami of rimonabant pretreated groups. In addition, the nitrate content in the PVN and SON was not altered in response to EVE or rimonabant pretreatment. Taken together, these results suggest that the CB(1) receptor may modulate several events that contribute to the development of appropriate responses to increased fluid volume and osmolality. Objective. The aim of this study was to compare GPX instruments and hand files for gutta-percha removal. Study design. Fifty maxillary central incisors with a single straight canal were instrumented and filled. The teeth were divided into 5 groups of 10 specimens each, according to the gutta-percha removal techniques: group 1: GPX (21-mm-long teeth); group 2: GPX and xylol as solvent (21-mm-long teeth); group 3: GPX (25-mm-long teeth); group 4: GPX and xylol as solvent (25-mm-long teeth); and group 5: hand files and xylol as solvent. The amount of time for gutta-percha removal and the number of fractured instruments were evaluated. Radiographs were taken, and the teeth were grooved longitudinally and split. The area of residual debris was measured using Sigma Scan software. Results. The time for filling material removal was significantly shorter when GPX was used (P < .05). Overall, hand files and solvent produced fewer remnants of filling materials (P < .05). In the GPX 25 mm-long teeth group, the filling material was not removed in the apical third. Conclusions. Under the experimental conditions, the GPX instruments proved to be faster than hand instruments in removing root filling materials; however, hand instruments left a smaller amount of residual filling materials on the canal walls. The GPX instruments did not pull the gutta-percha beyond its tip. (Oral Surg Oral Med Oral Pathol Oral Radiol Endod 2010; 110: 675-680)

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the efficacy of propolis extract in maintaining the viability of human periodontal ligament (PDL) cells, and to radiographically analyze tooth replantation and the adjacent periodontium in dogs after storage in this extract. Human PDL cells were incubated with the experimental media propolis, milk, saliva, Hank`s balanced salt solution (HBSS), and Dulbecco`s modified Eagles medium (DMEM, positive controls), and distilled water (negative control). Cell viability was determined 0, 1, 3, 6, 12, and 24 h later by colorimetric MTT assay. Thirty incisors from dogs were divided into two storage time blocks (1 and 3 h) and were maintained in the experimental media. HBSS served as a positive control, and dry teeth (on gauze) as a negative control. The replanted teeth were radiographed once per month for 6 months. The radiographic images were standardized by the shortening/lengthening factor, and were both qualitatively and quantitatively analyzed. The in vitro results showed that the efficacy of propolis in maintaining functional viability of PDL cells was similar to that of milk. Propolis and milk were significantly better than controls from the 6-h time period. The in vivo results showed that teeth maintained in propolis medium exhibited replacement resorption with significant reduction in tooth length, similar to teeth maintained in saliva and dried teeth. This resorption was less intense with the 3-h storage time than the 1-h storage time. Conditions close to normal were found in teeth maintained in milk, similar to the HBSS control. Therefore, although propolis was effective in maintaining the viability of human PDL cells, resorption of the tooth replantation in dogs occurred under these experimental conditions.

Phthalates are environmental contaminants used in the production of plastics, cosmetics and medical devices. Studies on the effects of phthalates on female reproductive health are particularly sparse and mostly restricted to high-dose exposure in rats. In the present study, pregnant rats were treated with 100 mg/kg-d of di-eta-butyl-phthalate (DBP) or only the vehicle (control group), from GD 12 to GD 20 for evaluation of reproductive outcomes and fetal gonads analysis (F0), and from GD 12 to PND 21 to evaluate reproductive development and function on F1 female offspring. Results showed that all parameters were comparable between groups, although there was a significant increase in the fetal weight after DBP exposure. However, the body weight at birth was normal. Based on these data we can conclude that, in these experimental conditions, DBP did not disturb the reproductive development or function of female rats. (C) 2009 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Purpose: To evaluate in vitro the solubility of the Epiphany endodontic filling material Epiphany (Pentron Clinical Technologies, Wallingford, CT) prepared with its resinous solvent. Methods: The specimens were prepared in the following experimental conditions: (1) GI, epiphany without photoactivation; (2) GII, Epiphany prepared with resinous solvent without photoactivation; (3) Gill, Epiphany followed by photoactivation; and (4) GIV, Epiphany prepared with resinous solvent followed by photoactivation. Ten specimens of each group were obtained from Teflon molds with 80% reduction in volume of the specimen`s dimensions based on American National Standard Institute/American Dental Association (ANSI/ADA) Specification No. 57. The samples were weighted and immersed in distilled water for 7 days. After this period, they were removed, dried, and weighed again. Solubility was calculated by using samples weight loss (%). The immersion liquid was evaluated through atomic absorption spectrometry. Results: The sealers without photoactivation were statistically similar (p > 0.05) between themselves (GI = 6.93% and GII = 6.39%) and different from the uncured sealers, which were statistically different between themselves (p < 0.05) (GIII = 3.56% and GIV = 0.47%). Only the Epiphany sealer prepared with resinous solvent followed by photoactivation presented solubility values within ANSI/ADA requirements, liberating the following amounts of ions: 114.43 mu g of Ca(2+)/mL, 2.4 mu g of Mg(2+)/mL, 0.33 mu g of Fe(2+)/mL, 0.11 mu 4g of Zn(2+)/mL, 1.31 mu g of Ni(2+)/mL, and 7.1 mu g of Na(+)/mL. Conclusion: The association of resinous solvent to the Epiphany sealer followed by photoactivation resulted in a filling material with low solubility and expressive liberation of calcium ions. The batch removal of hexavalent chromium (Cr(Vl)) from wastewater under different experimental conditions using economic adsorbents was investigated in this study. These adsorbents were produced from the pyrolysis and activation of the waste tyres (TAC) and from the pyrolysis of sawdust (SPC). The performance of these adsorbents against commercial activated carbon F400 (CAC) has also been carried out. The removal was favoured at low pH, with maximum removal at pH = 2 for all types of carbon. The effects of concentration, temperature and particle size have been reported. All sorbents were found to efficiently remove Cr(VI) from solution. The batch sorption kinetics have been tested for a first-order reversible reaction, a first-order and second-order reaction. The rate constants of adsorption for all these kinetic models have been calculated. The applicability of the Langmuir isotherm for the present system has been tested at different temperatures. The thermodynamic parameters (AGO, K,) obtained indicate the endothermic nature of Cr(Vl) adsorption on TAC, SPC and CAC. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

In this paper we investigate the quantum optics of a double-ended optical cavity. We show that an impedance matched, far-detuned cavity can be used to separate the positive and negative sidebands of a field. The 'missing' sideband will be replaced by the equivalent sideband incident on the cavity from the other direction. This technique can be used to convert the quantum correlations between the sidebands of the incident fields into quantum correlations between the two spatially distinct output fields. We show that, under certain experimental conditions, the fields emerging from the cavity will display entanglement.
