The memoir was written between 1899 and 1918. Family history going back to the early 18th century. Recollection of the author's childhood in Hildesheim. Moritz was the youngest child of Joseph and Bena Guedemann. Early death of his father in 1847. Moritz attended the Jewish elementary school prior to the age of five. In 1843 he was enrolled in the episcopal "Josephinum Gymnasium", where he was the only Jewish student in the entire school. He had friendly relationships with students and teachers and was not confronted with antisemitism during his school years. Moritz Guedemann graduated in 1853 and enrolled in the newly established Jewish Theological Seminary in Breslau. Description of teachers and colleagues in the seminary. Doctorate in 1858 and continuation of rabbinic studies. Occasional invitation to preach at the high holidays in Berlin, where Moritz got acquainted with the famous rabbi Dr. Michael Sachs. A zonally averaged version of the Goddard Laboratory for Atmospheric Sciences (GLAS) climate model is used to study the sensitivity of the northern hemisphere (NH) summer mean meridional circulation to changes in the large scale eddy forcing. A standard solution is obtained by prescribing the latent heating field and climatological horizontal transports of heat and momentum by the eddies. The radiative heating and surface fluxes are calculated by model parameterizations. This standard solution is compared with the results of several sensitivity studies. When the eddy forcing is reduced to 0.5 times or increased to 1.5 times the climatological values, the strength of the Ferrel cells decrease or increase proportionally. It is also seen that such changes in the eddy forcing can influence the strength of theNH Hadley cell significantly. Possible impact of such changes in the large scale eddy forcing on the monsoon circulation via changes in the Hadley circulation is discussed. Sensitivity experiments including only one component of eddy forcing at a time show that the eddy momentum fluxes seem to be more important in maintaining the Ferrel cells than the eddy heat fluxes. In the absence of the eddy heat fluxes, the observed eddy momentum fluxes alone produce subtropical westerly jets which are weaker than those in the standard solution. On the other hand, the observed eddy heat fluxes alone produce subtropical westerly jets which are stronger than those in the standard solution.

Tutkimukseni käsittelee Suomen Lähetysseuran Kiinan-työssä olleita perheitä vuosina 1915–1928. Enemmistö tuolloin SLS:n lähetystössä olleista läheteistä oli perheellisiä, ja perheiden elämäntilanteet lähetyskentällä vaikuttivat koko SLS:n yhteisön työmahdollisuuksiin. Tutkimukseni kohdehenkilöt ovat Signe ja Väinö Kantele sekä Inkeri ja Toivo Koskikallio perheineen, ja he edustavat sitä kokonaisuutta, jonka perheelliset lähetit Kiinassa muodostivat. Tutkin pro gradu -työssäni, millaista lähetystyöntekijöiden perhe-elämä oli lähetyskentällä. Kysyn myös, miten lähetystyö vaikutti perheeseen, ja miten perhe vaikutti lähetystyön tekemiseen. Lisäksi selvitän, miten kiinalainen kulttuuri vaikutti lähettiperheiden elämään. Tutkimukseni tärkeimmät lähteet ovat Signe Kanteleen kirjeet omaisilleen sekä Inkeri Koskikallion kirjeet ja päiväkirjat. Lähetyshistoriaa ei ole aiemmin tutkittu perheen näkökulmasta, joten tutkimus on hyvin aineistolähtöinen. Tärkeimpään käyttämääni kirjallisuuteen kuuluvat SLS:n Kiinan-työn historiaan sekä naislähetystyöntekijöihin liittyvät tutkimukset. Lähetystyöntekijät solmivat Kiinassa keskenään useita avioliittoja. Jotkut läheteistä olivat avioituneet jo Suomessa. SLS:n johtokunta kontrolloi lähettien avioliittoja ja myös perheiden lapsia, joten perhe ei ollut pelkästään lähettien yksityisasia. 1910- ja 1920-luvut olivat erityisen lapsirikasta aikaa, mikä vaikutti merkittävästi SLS:n Kiinan-yhteisön toimintaan. Joihinkin perheisiin oli syntynyt lapsia jo Suomessa ja lähetyskentällä perheisiin syntyi tutkimusajankohtana 26 lasta. Monet lähettiperheiden haasteista liittyivät lähetystyön ja perhe-elämän yhdistämiseen. Perheenäideillä oli vahva lähetyskutsumus, mutta raskaudet, synnytykset ja elämä pienten lasten kanssa rajoittivat naisten työskentelymahdollisuuksia ja aiheuttivat rooliristiriitoja. Perheen arjessa haasteena oli myös perheenisän poissaolo lähetystyöhön liittyneiden matkojen takia. Erityisesti tuolloin korostui lähetysasemalla asuneiden muiden suomalaisten läsnäolon tärkeys, vaikka SLS:n yhteisön tiiviys myös rajoitti perheiden yksityisyyttä. Perhe-elämällä oli SLS:n tuki, sillä monien muiden protestanttisten lähetysseurojen tavoin SLS kannusti perheellisiä lähettejään hyödyntämään perhettään evankelioimistyössä ja toimimaan kristityn perheen esimerkkinä paikallisille. Perheen esimerkillisyyteen kannustamisesta huolimatta Suomen Lähetysseura oli virallisissa julkaisuissaan vaitonainen perhetapahtumien vaikutuksesta työhön lähetyskentällä. Työn tukijat haluttiin vakuuttaa työn häiriöttömyydestä, vaikka todellisuus Kiinassa oli ajoittain toinen. Perheenäitien ja lasten sairastelut pakottivat perheenisiä välillä vähentämään tai lopettamaan työskentelyä. Lähetit myös menettivät Kiinassa lapsia ja puolisoita, mikä luonnollisesti vaikutti lähettiyhteisön toimintaan. Suomalaisvanhemmat kokivat perhe-elämän kiinalaisen kulttuurin keskellä ajoittain haasteelliseksi. Ristiriitatilanteita aiheuttivat kiinalaisten erilaiset elintavat ja esimerkiksi suomalaisten mielestä kyseenalainen lastenhoito- ja kasvatuskulttuuri. Suomalaisperheiden elämä Kiinassa oli joiltain osin samanlaista kuin heidän aikakautenaan Suomessa, mutta lähetystyö ja kiinalainen kulttuuri toivat siihen oman erikoisleimansa. Elämä perheenä lähetystyössä sisälsi paljon ulkoapäin tulleita ja sisäisiä haasteita. Lähetit kertoivat näistä haasteista, mutta korostivat myös vahvaa hengellistä kutsumustaan, tyytyväisyyttään elämäänsä sekä perheensä onnellisuutta.

The availability of oxygen has a major effect on all organisms. The yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae is able to adapt its metabolism for growth in different conditions of oxygen provision, and to grow even under complete lack of oxygen. Although the physiology of S. cerevisiae has mainly been studied under fully aerobic and anaerobic conditions, less is known of metabolism under oxygen-limited conditions and of the adaptation to changing conditions of oxygen provision. This study compared the physiology of S. cerevisiae in conditions of five levels of oxygen provision (0, 0.5, 1.0, 2.8 and 20.9% O2 in feed gas) by using measurements on metabolite, transcriptome and proteome levels. On the transcriptional level, the main differences were observed between the three level groups, 0, 0.5 2.8 and 20.9% O2 which led to fully fermentative, respiro-fermentative and fully respiratory modes of metabolism, respectively. However, proteome analysis suggested post-transcriptional regulation at the level of 0.5 O2. The analysis of metabolite and transcript levels of central carbon metabolism also suggested post-transcriptional regulation especially in glycolysis. Further, a global upregulation of genes related to respiratory pathways was observed in the oxygen-limited conditions and the same trend was seen in the proteome analysis and in the activities of enzymes of the TCA cycle. The responses of intracellular metabolites related to central carbon metabolism and transcriptional responses to change in oxygen availability were studied. As a response to sudden oxygen depletion, concentrations of the metabolites of central carbon metabolism responded faster than the corresponding levels of gene expression. In general, the genome-wide transcriptional responses to oxygen depletion were highly similar when two different initial conditions of oxygen provision (20.9 and 1.0% O2) were compared. The genes related to growth and cell proliferation were transiently downregulated whereas the genes related to protein degradation and phosphate uptake were transiently upregulated. In the cultures initially receiving 1.0% O2, a transient upregulation of genes related to fatty acid oxidation, peroxisomal biogenesis, response to oxidative stress and pentose phosphate pathway was observed. Additionally, this work analysed the effect of oxygen on transcription of genes belonging to the hexose transporter gene family. Although the specific glucose uptake rate was highest in fully anaerobic conditions, none of the hxt genes showed highest expression in anaerobic conditions. However, the expression of genes encoding the moderately low affinity transporters decreased with the decreasing oxygen level. Thus it was concluded that there is a relative increase in high affinity transport in anaerobic conditions supporting the high uptake rate.

In an estuary, mixing and dispersion resulting from turbulence and small scale fluctuation has strong spatio-temporal variability which cannot be resolved in conventional hydrodynamic models while some models employs parameterizations large water bodies. This paper presents small scale diffusivity estimates from high resolution drifters sampled at 10 Hz for periods of about 4 hours to resolve turbulence and shear diffusivity within a tidal shallow estuary (depth < 3 m). Taylor's diffusion theorem forms the basis of a first order estimate for the diffusivity scale. Diffusivity varied between 0.001 – 0.02 m2/s during the flood tide experiment. The diffusivity showed strong dependence (R2 > 0.9) on the horizontal mean velocity within the channel. Enhanced diffusivity caused by shear dispersion resulting from the interaction of large scale flow with the boundary geometries was observed. Turbulence within the shallow channel showed some similarities with the boundary layer flow which include consistency with slope of 5/3 predicted by Kolmogorov's similarity hypothesis within the inertial subrange. The diffusivities scale locally by 4/3 power law following Okubo's scaling and the length scale scales as 3/2 power law of the time scale. The diffusivity scaling herein suggests that the modelling of small scale mixing within tidal shallow estuaries can be approached from classical turbulence scaling upon identifying pertinent parameters.
