The effects of doped fluorescent dye 4-(dicyanomethylene)-2-i-propyl-6-(1, 1, 7, 7-tetramethyljulolidyl-9-enyl)-4H-pyran (DCJTI) on the charge carrier injection, transport and electroluminescence (EL) performance in polyfluorene (PFO)-based polymer light-emitting diodes (PLEDs) were investigated by steady-state current-voltage (I-V) characteristics and transient EL measurements. A red EL from DCJTI was observed and the EL performance depended strongly on the DCJTI concentration. The analysis of the steady-state I-V characteristics at different DCJTI concentrations found that three regions was shown in the I-V characteristics, and each region was controlled by different processes depending on the applied electric field. The effect of the dopant concentration on the potential-barrier height of the interface is estimated using the Fowler-Nordheim model. The dopant concentration dependence of the current-voltage relationship indicated clearly the carrier trapping by the DCJTI molecules. The mobility in DCJTI: PFO changed significantly with the DCJTI concentration, and showed a nontrivial dependence on the doping level. The behavior may be understood in terms of the formation of an additional energy disorder due to potential fluctuation caused by the Coulomb interaction of the randomly distributed doping molecules.

Zinc(II)-2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)benzothiazolate complex is an excellent white-light-emitting material. Despite some studies devoted to this complex, no information on the real origin of the unusually broad electroluminescent (EL) emission is available. Therefore, we investigate photoluminescent and EL properties of the zinc complex. Orange phosphorescent emission at 580 nm was observed for the complex in thin film at 77 K, whereas only fluorescent emission was obtained at room temperature. Molecular orbitals, excitation energy, and emission energy of the complex were investigated using quantum chemical calculations. We fabricated the device with a structure of ITO/F16CuPc(5.5 nm)/Zn-complex/Al, where F16CuPc is hexadecafluoro copper phthalocyanine. The EL spectra varied strongly with the thickness of the emissive layer. We observed a significant change in the emission spectra with the viewing angles. Optical interference effects and light emission originating both from fluorescence and from phosphorescence can explain all of the observed phenomena, resulting in the broad light emission for the devices based on the Zn complex. We calculated the charge transfer integral and the reorganization energy to explain why the Zn complex is a better electron transporter than a hole transporter.

Novel hole-transporting molecules containing 1,4-bis(carbazolyl)benzene as a central unit and different numbers of diphenylamine moieties as the peripheral groups have been synthesized and characterized. These compounds are thermally stable with high glass transition temperatures of 141-157 degreesC and exhibit chemically reversible redox processes. Their amorphous state stability and hole transport properties can be significantly improved by increasing the number of diphenylamine moieties in the outer part and by controlling the symmetry of the carbazole-based molecules. These compounds can be used as good hole-tran sporting materials for organic electroluminescent (EL) devices. The device performance based on tri- and tetra-substituted carbazole derivatives is comparable to that of a typical 4,4'-bis[N-(1-naphthyl)-N-phenylamino] biphenyl (NPB)-based device.

Microcavity organic light-emitting diodes having a top metal mirror and a bottom dielectric mirror, which was distributed Bragg reflectors (DBR) fabricated by using TiO2-SiO2 alternative dielectric multilayer with a central stop-band and two sub-stop-bands, were fabricated. In the devices, the active layers consisted of a hole-transporting layer N,N'-di(naphthalene-1-yl)-N,N'-diphenylbenzidine (NPB) and an electron- transporting/emitting layer tris(8-hydroxy-quinoline) aluminum (Alq(3)). The relationship of the electroluminescent (EL) spectrum and efficiency with the thickness of the active layer and metal layer was studied. It was found that the EL emissive color did not strongly depend on the thickness of the organic layer and metal layer, which was attributed to the excellent photon confinement role of the narrow stop-band of the used dielectric mirror. Thus, high efficiency microcavity organic light-emitting diodes were achieved, and the peak wavelength and color purity were not obviously changed, via optimizing the thickness of organic layer and metal electrode.

Stacked organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs) based on a europium complex Eu(TTA)(3) (Tmphen) (TTA = thenoyltrifluoroacetone,Tmphen = 3,4,7,8-tetramethyl-1,10-phenanthroline) were fabricated. In this stacked OLEDs, Li:BCP/V2O5 was used the intermediate charge generation layer sandwiched between two identical emissive units consisting of TPD/CBP:DCJTB:Eu(TTA)(3)(Tmphen)/BCP. As expected, the brightness and electroluminescent (EL) current efficiency were approximately enhanced by double times that of conventional single-unit devices. The stacked OLEDs showed the maximum luminance up to 3000 cd/m(2) at a current density of 190 mA/cm(2) and a current efficiency of 14.5 cd/A at a current density of 0.08 mA/cm(2). At the brightness of 100 cd/m(2), the current efficiency reached 10 cd/A at a current density of 1.6 mA/cm2.

By comparing the phosphorescence spectra of Gd(acac)(3) (acac: acetylacetone) and Gd(TFacac)(3) (TFacac: 1, 1, 1-trifluoro-acetylacetone), the effect of fluorine replacing of hydrogen was discussed. It can lower the triplet state energy of acac and make it more suitable to the D-5(1) energy state of europium. Organic electroluminescent (OEL) devices with corresponding europium complexes as emissive layers were fabricated. A triple laver-type device with a structure of glass substrate/indium-tin oxide (ITO)/poly(N-vinylcarbazole) (PVK)/PVK:Eu(TFacac)(3)phen:2-(4-biphenyl)-5-(4-t-butylphenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole (PBD)/PBD/Al exhibits bright red luminescence upon applying dc voltage, The device has the properties of a diode and the current-bias voltage line was obtained.

The solubility of [Tris-(acetylsalicylate)-terbium] [Tb(AS)(3)] is improved to a greater extent than [Tris-(salicylate)-terbium] [Tb(Sal)(3)] following introduction of a flexible acetyl group. Th3+ binds with acetylsalicylate in solution at low pH value and the resultant Tb(AS)(3) has good solubility in chloroform. A Green EL device with the structure ITO/PVK/PVB:PBD: Tb(AS)(3)/ PBD/Al has been fabricated based on soluble Tb(AS)(3), in which Tb(AS)(3) was first used as an emissive center doped with PVK and PBD. The hole-transporting layer and the emissive layer were formed by spin coating. The device exhibited a highly pure characteristic green light of Tb3+. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. A series of alternating copolymers containing triphenylamine (TPA) moieties and oligomeric PPV segments in the main chain have been synthesized by Wittig condensation. The resulting polymers exhibit good thermal stability with decomposition temperatures (Tds) above 305 degreesC under nitrogen at 10 degreesC/min, and high glass transition temperatures (Tgs). They show intense photoluminescence in solution and film. The single-layer electroluminescent device using TAA-PV1 as emissive layer emits green light at 522nm with a turn-on voltage of 6V and maximum brightness of about 200cd/m(2) at 20V.

Bright blue polymer light-emitting diodes have been fabricated by using the poly(p-phenylenevinylene)-based copolymers with 10 C long aliphatic chains as the electroluminescent layers, PBD in PMMA and Alq(3) as the electron-transporting layers, and aluminum as the cathode. The multilayer structure devices show 190 cd/m(2) light-emitting brightness at 460 nm, 15 V turn-on vol- tage. It is found that the intensities of photoluminescence and electroluminescence (EL) increase with increasing aliphatic chain length, the EL intensity and operation stability of these polymer light-emitting diodes can be improved by reasonable design of the structure.

Polymer light-emitting devices (PLEDs) with poly(2-methoxy-5-hexyloxy)-p-phenylenevinylene (OC1OC6-PPV) as the emissive layer were studied with an electron injection layer of ionomers consisting of copolymers of styrene and methylmethacrylate (PS/PMMA) with 3, 6 and 8 mol% degree of sulfonation. The ionomers were able to form very thin films over the emissive layer, with less than 30 nm. Additionally, the presence of ion pairs of ionomer suppresses the tendency toward dewetting of the thin film of ionomer (similar to 10 nm) which can cause malfunction of the device. The effect of the ionomers was investigated as a function of the ion content. The devices performance, characterized by their current density and luminance intensity versus voltage, showed a remarkable increase with the ionomer layer up to 6 mol% of ionic groups, decreasing after that for the 8 mol% ionomer device. The study of the impedance spectroscopy in the frequency range from 0.1 to 10(6) Hz showed that the injection phenomena dominate over the transport in the electroluminescent polymer bulk. New polymerisable photoluminescent octahedral rhenium cluster complexes trans-[{Re6Q8}(TBP)4(VB)2] (Q = S or Se; TBP-p-tert-butylpyridine; VB-vinyl benzoate) have been synthesised, characterised and used to construct rhenium cluster-organic polymer hybrid materials. These novel polymer systems are solution-processable and the rhenium clusters retain their photoluminescent properties within the polymer environment. Notably, when the rhenium cluster complexes are incorporated into the matrix of the electroluminescent polymer poly(N-vinylcarbazole), the resultant cluster polymer hybrid combined properties of both components and was used successfully in the construction of a polymer light emitting diode (PLED). These prototype devices are the first PLEDs to incorporate octahedral rhenium clusters and provide the first direct evidence of the electroluminescent properties of rhenium clusters and indeed, to the best of our knowledge, of any member of the family of 24-electron hexanuclear cluster complexes of molybdenum, tungsten or rhenium.
