Electrocatalytic performance of the Pr-TiOx/Ti electrode prepared with electrochemical reduction-oxidation method toward the oxidation of methanol has been studied, The experimental results showed that the Pt-TiOx/Ti electrode has a high electrocatalytic activity and good stability for the electrocatalytic oxidation of methanol, By means of electrochemical, XPS, STM and in-situ FTIR techniques, it was found that one reason for the electrode to exhibit an excellent performance is attributed to the high dispersion between nanosized Pt and TiOx particles, The low adsorption ability of the intermediate derived from methanol, such as linearly adsorbed CO species on the electrode surface due to the interaction between Pt and TiOx, also results in the excellent performance.

A novel amperometric biosensor for quantification of the electrochemically inert polar organic solvents based on tyrosinase electrode was preliminarily reported. The biosensor was fabricated by simply syringing an aqueous solution of tyrosinase/PVAVP (PVAVP: copolymer of poly(vinyl alcohol) grafting with 4-vinylpyridine) onto glassy carbon electrode surface followed by drying the modified electrode at +4 degrees C in a refrigerator. The current generated from electrochemical reduction of quinone is a probe signal. The biosensor can be used for quantification of polar organic solvents, and its mechanism was characterized with in situ steady-state amperometry-quartz crystal microbalance experiments. The detection limit, sensitivity, and dynamic range for certain organic solvents are dependent on the kind and concentration of the substrate probe and the hydrophobicity of the immobilization matrix. The response time for all the tested organic solvents is less than 2 min.

A simple route to the fabrication of multilayer films containing Pd nanoparticles is described. Following layer-by-layer assembly of PdCl42- and polycation, QPVP-Os (a quaternized poly(4-vinylpyridine) complexed with [Os(bpy)(2)Cl](2+/+)), on 4-aminobenzoic acid-modified glassy carbon electrodes, the three-dimensional Pd nanoparticle multilayer films are directly formed on electrode surfaces via electrochemical reduction of PdCl42- sandwiched between polymers. The growth of PdCl42- is easy on electrode surfaces by electrostatic interaction, and the assembly processes are monitored by cyclic voltammetry and UV-vis spectroscopy. The depth profile analyses by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy verify the constant composition of the Pd nanoparticle multilayer films. Atomic force microscopy proves that the as-prepared Pd nanoparticles are uniformly distributed with an average particle diameter of 3-7 mn. The resulting Pd nanoparticle multilayer-modified electrode possesses high catalytic activity for the reduction of dissolved oxygen and oxidation of hydrazine compounds in aqueous solution.

An electrochemically stable monolayer of tris(2,2'-bipyridyl)ruthenium(II) was obtained for the first time. It was based on the electrostatic attachment of Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) to the benzene sulfonic acid monolayer film, which was covalently bound onto glassy carbon electrode by the electrochemical reduction of diazobenzene sulfonic acid. The surface-confined Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) underwent reversible surface process, and reacted with the coreactant, tripropylamine, to produce electrochemiluminescence. In view of the stability of the electrode, the results strongly suggested that light was emitted from the surface-confined Ru(bpy)(3)(2+), not from the detached Ru(bpy)(3)(2+). The Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) modified electrode was used to the determination of tripropylamine. It showed good linearity in the concentration range from 5 muM to 1 muM with a detection limit of 1 muM (S/N = 4). The good stability of the Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) modified electrode also showed that the benzene sulfonic acid monolayer film prepared can be served as an excellent support to construct multilayers. The conformational transition of disulfides in bovine serum albumin (BSA) induced by electrochemical redox reaction of disulfides were monitored by in-situ circular dichroism (CD) spectroelectrochemistry, with a long optical path thin layer cell and analyzed by a singular value decomposition least square (SVDLS) method. Electrochemical reduction of disulfides drives the left-handed conformation of disulfides changed into the right-handed. At open circuit, eight of the 17 disulfides were of left-handed conformation. Four of the 17 disulfides took part in the electrochemical reduction with an EC mechanism. Only one-fourth of the reduced disulfides returned to left-handed conformation in the re-oxidation process. Some parameters of the electrochemical reduction process, i.e. the number of electrons transferred and electron transfer coefficient, n=8, alphan=0.15, apparent formal potential, E-1(0') = -0.65(+/-0.01) V, standard heterogeneous electron transfer rate constant, k(1)(0) = (2.84 +/- 0.14)x 10(-5) cm s(-1) and chemical reaction equilibrium constant, K-c=(5.13 +/- 0.12) x 10(-2), were also obtained by double logarithmic analysis based on the near-UV absorption spectra with applied potentials. A composite film containing heteropolyanion was fabricated on gold by attaching the Keggin-type heteropolyanion, PMo12O403- on a 4-aminothiophenol SAM via Au-S bonding. Reflection FTIR, cyclic voltammetry and XPS were used for the characterization of the composite film. Reflection FTIR studies indicate that there is some Coulombic interaction between PMo12O403- and the surface amino group in the composite film, which greatly improves the film stability and prevents effectively the destructive intermolecular aggregation. The composite him shows three reversible redox couples within the pH range pH less than or equal to 7.0, attributed to three two-electron and two-proton electrochemical reduction-oxidation processes of PMo12O403-. Compared with PMo12O403- in the solution, the PMo12O403- of the composite film electrode can exist in a larger pH range, and shows smaller peak-to-peak separation, and more reversible reaction kinetics. Moreover, the composite him obtained shows a good catalytic activity for the reduction of BrO3-. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.

The electrochemically deposited poly(o-phenylenediamine) film on a Pt electrode has been investigated utilizing in situ external reflection FTIR spectroelectrochemistry technique. The prepared ladder polymer film is found to be partially ring-opened. The dopant ClO4- is evidenced to orient in such a way that more than one oxygen atom attach to the charge sites of the polymer. This suggests that positive charges of oxidized polymer are partially delocalized over the whole chains. The proton movement observed during the oxidation reaction is associated with the solvated MeCN molecule. It is proposed that the proton diffusion, dissolvation and protonation of the film may be essential to the electrochemical reduction reaction of the film. Copyright (C) 1996 Elsevier Science Ltd.

The conformational transition of horse heart cytochrome c induced by bromopyrogal red (BPR) in very low concentration has been firstly investigated by dynamic spectroelectrochemical technique, both at the BPR adsorbed platinum gauze electrode and at a bare platinum gauze electrode in a solution containing BPR. The effect of BPR on the structure of cytochrome c was studied by UV-visible and Fourier transform IR spectroscopy. The unfolded cytochrome c behaves simply as an electron transfer protein with a formal potential of -142 mV vs. a normal hydrogen electrode. The difference between the formal potentials of the native and unfolded cytochrome c is coupled to a difference in conformational energy of the two states of about 40 kJ mol(-1), which agrees well with the result reported. The stability and slow refolding of the unfolded cytochrome c are discussed.

The electrochemical reduction of bilirubin (BR) in dimethyl formamide (DMF) is discussed in detail. The kinetic study of the electroreduction process of BR results in values of 7.94 x 10(-6) cm2/s for the diffusion coefficient and about 10(-3) cm/s for the standard heterogeneous electrode reaction rate constant. Thin-layer spectroelectrochemical investigations of BR exhibit a blue shift and a red shift at E(pc) = -0.6 V and E(pc) = -0.85 V respectively. They also give values of E0' = -1.55 V and n = 1 for the reduction process, and E0' = -1.35 V and n = 1 for the oxidation process. It was found experimentally that as the potential changes from negative to positive, the sequential color changes are similar to those of some of the color components in visible light. A mechanism for BR electroreduction in DMF has been proposed.

This thesis investigates the application of plasmonic gold nanostructures for mercury detection. Various gold and silver single nanostructures and gold nanostructure assemblies were characterised in detail by correlated single nanostructure spectroscopy and electron microscopy. Several routes for mercury detection were explored: plasmon resonance energy transfer (PRET) upon Hg2+ binding to immobilised gold nanoparticle-organic ligand hybrid structures and amalgamation of single immobilised gold nanorods upon chemical and upon electrochemical reduction of Hg2+ ions. The amalgamation approach showed large potential with extraordinary shifts of the nanorods’ scattering spectra upon exposure to reduced mercury; a result of compositional and morphological change induced in the nanorod by amalgamation with mercury. A shift of 5 nm could be recorded for a concentration as low 10 nM Hg2+. Through detailed time-dependent experiments insights into the amalgamation mechanism were gained and a model comprising 5 steps was developed. Finally, spectroelectrochemistry proved to be an excellent way to study in real time in-situ the amalgamation of mercury with gold nanorods paving the way for future work in this field.

The comparative study of the voltammetry of H[NTf2], HCl and H[AuCl4] in [C(4)mim][NTf2] has provided an insight into the influence of protons on the reduction of [AuCl4](-) at Au, Pt or glassy carbon (GC) electrodes, and has allowed the identification of an unprecedented proton-induced electroless deposition of Au on relatively inert GC surfaces. For the first time, clear evidence of the quantitative formation of [HCl2](-) has been obtained in HCl/[C(4)mim][NTf2] mixtures, and the electrochemical behavior of these mixtures analyzed. In particular, a significant shift of the dissociation equilibrium toward the formation of chloride and the solvated proton (H-IL(+)), following electrochemical reduction of H-IL(+) has been observed in the time-scale of the experiments.

The electrochemical reduction of oxygen is reported in four room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) based on quaternary alkyl -onium cations and heavily fluorinated anions in which the central atom is either nitrogen or phosphorus. Data were collected using cyclic voltammetry and potential step chronoamperometry at gold, platinum, and glassy carbon disk electrodes of micrometer dimension under water-free conditions at a controlled temperature. Analysis via fitting, to appropriate theoretical equations was then carried out to obtain kinetic and thermodynamic information pertaining to the electrochemical processes observed. In the quaternary ammonium electrolytes, reduction of oxygen was found to occur reversibly to give stable superoxide, in an analogous manner to that seen in conventional aprotic solvents such as dimethyl sufoxide and acetonitrile. The most significant difference is in the relative rate of diffusion; the diffusion coefficients of oxygen in the RTILs are an order of magnitude lower than in common organic solvents, and for superoxide these values are reduced by a further factor of 10. In the quaternary phosphonium ionic liquids, however, more complex voltammetry is observed, akin to that expected for the reduction of oxygen in acidified organic media. This is shown to be consistent with the occurrence of a proton abstraction reaction between the electrogenerated superoxide and quaternary alkyl phosphonium cations following the initial electron transfer.

The electrochemical reduction of benzoic acid (BZA) has been studied at platinum micro-electrodes (10 and 2 mu m diameters) in acetonitrile (MeCN) and six room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs): [C(2)mim][NTf2], [C(4)min][NTf2], [C(4)mpyrr][NTf2], [C(4)mim][BF4], [C(4)mim][NO3] and [C(4)mim][PF6] (where [C(n)mim](+)=1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium, [NTf2](-)=bis(trifluoromethylsulphonyl)imide, [C(4)mpyrr](+)=N-butyl-N-methylpyrrolidinium, [BF4](-)=tetrafluoroborate, [NO3](-)=nitrate and [PF6] = hexafluorophosphate). Based on the theoretical fitting to experimental chronoamperometric transients in [C4mpyrr][NTf2] and MeCN at several concentrations and on different size electrodes, it is suggested that a fast chemical step preceeds the electron transfer step in a CE mechanism (given below) in both RTILs and MeCN, leading to the appearance of a simple one-electron transfer mechanism.
