NMR spectra of molecules oriented in thermotropic liquid crystalline media provide information on the molecular structure and order. The spins are generally strongly dipolar coupled and the spectral analyse require the tedious and time consuming numerical iterative calculations. The present study demonstrates the application of multiple quantum spin state selective detection of single quantum transitions for mimicking the homonuclear decoupling and the direct estimation of an element of ordering matrix. This information is utilized to estimate the nearly accurate starting dipolar couplings for iterative calculations. The studies on the spectra of strongly dipolar coupled five and six interacting spin systems are reported.

Let Wm,p denote the Sobolev space of functions on Image n whose distributional derivatives of order up to m lie in Lp(Image n) for 1 less-than-or-equals, slant p less-than-or-equals, slant ∞. When 1 < p < ∞, it is known that the multipliers on Wm,p are the same as those on Lp. This result is true for p = 1 only if n = 1. For, we prove that the integrable distributions of order less-than-or-equals, slant1 whose first order derivatives are also integrable of order less-than-or-equals, slant1, belong to the class of multipliers on Wm,1 and there are such distributions which are not bounded measures. These distributions are also multipliers on Lp, for 1 < p < ∞. Moreover, they form exactly the multiplier space of a certain Segal algebra. We have also proved that the multipliers on Wm,l are necessarily integrable distributions of order less-than-or-equals, slant1 or less-than-or-equals, slant2 accordingly as m is odd or even. We have obtained the multipliers from L1(Image n) into Wm,p, 1 less-than-or-equals, slant p less-than-or-equals, slant ∞, and the multiplier space of Wm,1 is realised as a dual space of certain continuous functions on Image n which vanish at infinity.

Hole-doped perovskites such as La1-xCaxMnO3 present special magnetic and magnetotransport properties, and it is commonly accepted that the local atomic structure around Mn ions plays a crucial role in determining these peculiar features. Therefore experimental techniques directly probing the local atomic structure, like x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), have been widely exploited to deeply understand the physics of these compounds. Quantitative XAS analysis usually concerns the extended region [extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS)] of the absorption spectra. The near-edge region [x-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES)] of XAS spectra can provide detailed complementary information on the electronic structure and local atomic topology around the absorber. However, the complexity of the XANES analysis usually prevents a quantitative understanding of the data. This work exploits the recently developed MXAN code to achieve a quantitative structural refinement of the Mn K-edge XANES of LaMnO3 and CaMnO3 compounds; they are the end compounds of the doped manganite series LaxCa1-xMnO3. The results derived from the EXAFS and XANES analyses are in good agreement, demonstrating that a quantitative picture of the local structure can be obtained from XANES in these crystalline compounds. Moreover, the quantitative XANES analysis provides topological information not directly achievable from EXAFS data analysis. This work demonstrates that combining the analysis of extended and near-edge regions of Mn K-edge XAS spectra could provide a complete and accurate description of Mn local atomic environment in these compounds.

Superharmonic vibrations of order 3 in stretched strings driven by a single-mode planar simple-harmonic force are investigated. It is shown that planar as well as nonplanar superharmonic resonances can occur. After giving a few analytical results, the problem is thoroughly investigated numerically. The stability analysis shows that the region of stable nonplanar oscillations is much smaller than that of stable planar oscillation. It is observed in the case of nonplanar oscillations that the amplitude of the superharmonic in the plane normal to the plane of excitation is larger than that in the plane of excitation.

XANES in the K-edge of copper in the systems CuO, Cu(OH)2, La2CuO4, Cu3AsO4 and CuOHF have been investigated and transitions have been assigned to the observed structures. The measurements have been used for calculating the first coordination bond distance in the above systems. It is observed that the values so determined agree fairly well with crystallographic values.

Quinones play a vital role in the process of electron transfer in bacterial photosynthetic reaction centers. It is of interest to investigate the photochemical reactions involving quinones with a view to elucidating the structure-function relationships in the biological processes. Resonance Raman spectra of radical anions and the time-resolved resonance Raman spectra of vitamin K-1 (model compound for Q(A) in Rhodopseudomonas viridis, a bacterial photosynthetic reception center) are presented. The photochemical intermediates of vitamin K-1, viz. radical anion, ketyl radical and o-quinone methide have been identified. The vibrational assignments of all these intermediates are made on the basis of comparison with our earlier TR3 studies on radical anions of naphthoquinone and menaquinone. This work derives inner and outer bounds on the generalized degrees of freedom (GDOF) of the K-user symmetric MIMO Gaussian interference channel. For the inner bound, an achievable GDOF is derived by employing a combination of treating interference as noise, zero-forcing at the receivers, interference alignment (IA), and extending the Han-Kobayashi (HK) scheme to K users, depending on the number of antennas and the INR/SNR level. An outer bound on the GDOF is derived, using a combination of the notion of cooperation and providing side information to the receivers. Several interesting conclusions are drawn from the bounds. For example, in terms of the achievable GDOF in the weak interference regime, when the number of transmit antennas (M) is equal to the number of receive antennas (N), treating interference as noise performs the same as the HK scheme and is GDOF optimal. For K >; N/M+1, a combination of the HK and IA schemes performs the best among the schemes considered. However, for N/M <; K ≤ N/M+1, the HK scheme is found to be GDOF optimal.

In this paper, we consider the inference for the component and system lifetime distribution of a k-unit parallel system with independent components based on system data. The components are assumed to have identical Weibull distribution. We obtain the maximum likelihood estimates of the unknown parameters based on system data. The Fisher information matrix has been derived. We propose -expectation tolerance interval and -content -level tolerance interval for the life distribution of the system. Performance of the estimators and tolerance intervals is investigated via simulation study. A simulated dataset is analyzed for illustration.

Materials with widely varying molecular topologies and exhibiting liquid crystalline properties have attracted considerable attention in recent years. C-13 NMR spectroscopy is a convenient method for studying such novel systems. In this approach the assignment of the spectrum is the first step which is a non-trivial problem. Towards this end, we propose here a method that enables the carbon skeleton of the different sub-units of the molecule to be traced unambiguously. The proposed method uses a heteronuclear correlation experiment to detect pairs of nearby carbons with attached protons in the liquid crystalline core through correlation of the carbon chemical shifts to the double-quantum coherences of protons generated through the dipolar coupling between them. Supplemented by experiments that identify non-protonated carbons, the method leads to a complete assignment of the spectrum. We initially apply this method for assigning the C-13 spectrum of the liquid crystal 4-n-pentyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl oriented in the magnetic field. We then utilize the method to assign the aromatic carbon signals of a thiophene based liquid crystal thereby enabling the local order-parameters of the molecule to be estimated and the mutual orientation of the different sub-units to be obtained.
